I found the romance stuff in the games to be seriously lacking, so I write it out and add to it myself, exactly the way I want it. I disagree they're fleshed out wholeheartedly.

Here's the thing, the romance stuff made by the team, no matter how terribly, will always 9/10 be better than the smut or cheese the internet will produce to replace it. DA:I isn't a dating sim, so the fact that romances aren't the focus doesn't bother me, nor does it warrant me finding a need to figure out how it really should have went.

I don't play these games to bang the girl. If the hero gets the girl then it's a bonus. If the girl is a heroine in her own right double bonus. But the romance stuff takes a back seat to the conflict. I don't need to read someone else's domestic version of Mr. and Mrs. Hero to get what I want of out of a story, movie, book, or game.

Indeed.  I was actually thinking of Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts and how randy my Inquisitor and Cassandra would be getting and their choice of words mocking everyone around them while he has to put on a brave face and them getting a little...by the killings...of various people who could be spoilery. :P

Neither do I, otherwise I'd never play the game and just read romance and smut novels all day. I don't go on dates for the food, but I'd appreciate a good steak along with it anyway. It's one aspect I enjoy about the game. Why not indulge in it a bit.

Re: the awful McCoy/Spock fanfic, there used to be a website back in the day called "godawful Star Trek Fanfiction" that would routinely mock these sorts of efforts. It was hilarious. The site became defunct about 5-7 years ago, but you can still find an archive with some of their gems. Here it is: http://www.godawful.net/tos.htm

Besides the fact that it's terrible, most of it anyway, it more often than not caters to what the fanfic writers wants out of a character than what the character themselves would behave if written by the original author, and I find that detrimental. But that's my business. If you want fanfiction where Cassandra tsunders her way into your heart with beatings and evasiveness, be my guest.

Fwiw, it's usually pretty easy to tell whether or not it's going to be terrible from the summary, or at least the first two paragraphs. It's not like you have to slog through all the dreck personally to find something good, unless you're terrible at skimming.

Like I said, though, it may all depend on how much you like reading. I can go through a 500 page novel in a day or two, so I constantly have to search for stuff to feed my crack, I mean, reading habit.

Hey, if something inspires you to write, do it. No excuse to not be creative if you're feeling it.

Everything you do sucks until you get better... and you only get better by doing. If it never goes anywhere, doesn’t matter, because that's not really the point. I'm not likely to read much or write any, but hating on fanfic because it's usually bad is looking but not seeing. I mean, it's free, right?

Something being free doesn't mean it isn't warrant to criticism and my disdain. And that speech aside, if it actually got better over time, which it doesn't, I'd agree. But it doesn't, so I don't. If you like to read that stuff, fine. I won't, which is also fine.

Yea, that's pretty much the point of fanfiction. It's not that hard to find a story you'll enjoy, and if it's an issue for you, write it yourself ;) I get that it's not for you, but it's not a hard concept to grasp. There's absolutely nothing detrimental about someone writing their own stories outside of the game.

In fact, it could even be the answer to those who want their weirdo fetish Qunari pairings to be more than that. Save game resources and tell people to write fanfic.

Nobody here has said that fanfic isn't above criticism or disdain because it's free.

That being said, I've read fanfiction that's better than some published novels. Is that the great majority of it? Heck, no. If you refuse to read a genre because 95% is garbage, that's your prerogative, and I can't argue with your point of view. But to imply it's all garbage that's not worth your time simply is not the case.

And, I have read authors that have gotten better over time. They're rare, true, because most people take any criticism as a personal attack on their thoughts and ideas, but people who are receptive to constructive criticism generally tend to improve.

I wished they had done more with Samson than just make him a one dimensional villain.

They should've had someone else be the leader than Samson

Who do you have in mind?

I think it's a natural choice at least.. he was a crack addict in the first place.

Which is why he makes for a terrible Dragon to the Big Bad and a bad choice for General of the Big Bad's army. A Death's Hand he was not. Samson is Lt. material at best.

And I can't picture that many Templars flipping on the Maker (addiction or no) just as much as I can't picture a Venatori Legion infiltrating Ferelden/Orlais.

Someone completely new like Cal, I'm fine with Samson being a Red Templar

Which honestly the game should've had more bosses from the factions in the story

You seem to be awfully passionate about this.

If you find something terrible, avoid it. That's rather elementary. But the real point here is that terrible fiction is not limited to fan fiction, and fan fiction isn't always terrible. Furthermore, criticism, or open distain, which is hardly criticism, that is not followed through is both unhelpful and discouraging. The latter of which is particularly caustic to tender creativity.

So while it might be all okay all the time, there's really no need to be such a grump.

I could have bought Samson being the leader of a red templar outpost somewhere, perhaps the boss for the Emprise De Lion zone (Freeing Imshael for something else later), but having him be the big bad's second in command? I chuckled at Haven when I heard Cullen be all worried when he explained that it was Samson leading them.

Atleast with Calpernia we are dealing with an entirely new character, so I am far more willing to believe she had leadership material in her. More than Samson at any rate.

Fair enough. I'm always down with new characters.
