If there are no talking animals in Thedas, how did the Tevinter magisters communicate with Dumat? Did a demon play them, or what? What would Dumat know of the Golden City?

The Old Gods just look like dragons, they aren't actually animals....
As for the question, probably through the Fade, or something.

Well, we see a Magister try to communicate with Dumat. It doesn't seem to have required the Fade, unless Corypheus took a serious mental beating while he slept and forgot that you can't simply call out to them. (Which I'm not discounting as a possibility, mind you.)

Yeah, chances are the Old Gods just chose a form that would inspire awe to the Magisters. What's more awe-inspiring than a dragon?

Maybe he could turn into a human(oid), like Flemeth can turn into a dragon. We don't really know their nature.

apparently fade spirits called the "Forbidden Ones" taught humans blood magic. While it is also said that the Old Gods taught blood magic to humans, its pretty interesting. We defeated two of the "Forbidden Ones", and there's a hint Flemeth is also one of them called The Formless One, seeing as she shapeshifts and Morrigan stated that "she's not even truly human"

I like this theory about Flemeth,I wonder if the Forgotten ones in the Dalish pantheon are the same entities as the forbidden ones...

I feel like Flemeth is probably something more main-plot related than the Forbidden Ones. The ones in DA2 didn't have even approaching the same level of plot relevance. They were basically just secret mini-bosses. It seems weird to me to make at least half of them huge throw aways, while Flemeth is integral to huge sections of the plot.

I loved demon kitty in The Stone Prisoner, I let her posses the girl, and what's even amusing was that the father didn't even notice. I'd love to see more of the "demons possess little animals" scenarios in the game.
