What amuses me are how selective people are when it comes to forced squadmates and conversation. For some reason liara gets the brunt even though she is not particularly that bad.

It's mostly because if you dislike anyone else strongly enough you can have them killed off. James has little forced conversations same with EDI.

On Mars during Liara's intro, my Shepard's eyes light up when he sees her and he says "Liara!" Is that an import bug or does Shepard do that by default?

Don't think it's an import bug, as I've never had it not happen (although it was a while since I last played through this sequence). I think it's the writers' way of signaling to players new to ME that Liara Matters to Shepard, but I always found it annoying the breathy way mShep says "Liara" as if he's seen just seen the love of his life for the first time in a thousand years or something.

Might be a bug. A Shepard who romanced her is notably more restrained.

To the OP:

I think it's because people look at Liara's content, look at their own favorite characters, and go "WTF"?

Liara is pretty much Shepard's canon buddy, if not lover.   Regardless of how she's treated.  She also had an entire dlc devoted to her in ME2.  And doesn't suffer from teh sidelining effect of most of the other ME1 and ME2 cast.

Me, I like Liara.  But then I look at Ash and go "Daaaaang.  Guess I know what the "unofficial" canon is.

Yeah. It seems to be a scene with a lot forced tenderness. Which makes no sense if you have no feelings towards her.

Shepard needs Liara's advice because Shepard is a moron.

It's possible the flags got switched. Then again, Liara's romance only actually becomes romantic at Cronos. Say what you will about the amount of Miranda's content, I never got the feeling she was only tolerating Shep.

I think that's less an issue of amount of content and more about what the content was. Tali shows up in the last third of the game but her scenes are so damn good that I don't have any motivation to romance anyone else in other playthroughs (I did do a Liara one).

Kaidan dies. Ash struts her stuff. She's heard about Miranda's ass and there's a throw-down. Miranda's Cerberus as far as she's concerned. She's a rival with an asset. She doesn't want Shepard to be a wussy paragon. She wants Shepard to man up on Mars and make it clear to her that he's no longer with Cerberus (i.e. tell her to shut the f*** up about Cerberus -- "Yes!"), then throw her in the sack and ravage her. But then she gets the snot beat out of her by that damned robot.

What Liara sort of reminds me of is that rather bland gal who showed up in all those old Clint Eastwood movies (what's-her-name). Outlaw Josie Wales, that Dirty Harry sequel, etc. Never had much personality in any of those movies, but she was always, always cast as his romantic interest. I think Eastwood dating her was the reason she got work.

Liara is an odd one in ME3, she seems largely indifferent to Shep most of the game.

No, she doesn't.

Just because someone is a love interest does not mean they should have a completely different relationship with the player character.

Friends first. Lovers second.

What I thought was odder was how she went from being the woman who was perfectly calm before and after the premeditated murder of Nyxeris; who glibly announced that she'd kill all five of the people she suspected to be the Observer if Shepard refused to help... then come Thessia, she "can't be that callous" when you recommend she try to shut out the destruction and focus on the objective.

Technically a true statement, after 3 years and what they've been through, there should be difference in tone.

Hmm.  Just like she shoots a lot of people trying to shoot at her, but doesn't shoot innocent people at random?

It's almost as if there's a difference to her between innocent civilians and hostile enemies.

Tell that to Sekat. "I got him killed, and I'd do it again."

Could you even wait for a page turn before contradicting yourself?

She was gonna gun down people without evidence of them doing anything...you know innocent people.

Do you understand the fact that a 'completely different relationship' and a 'difference in tone' are not the same thing as you seem to have deluded yourself into thinking? That's it's perfectly possible to have a difference in tone without completely revamping Shepard's relationship with Liara?

Apparently you don't.

Also, Liara point-blank says all five are connected to the Broker in some form or another.
