I basically beat it in two days, even with exploring some other planets and doing some side quests.   Do you think that ME2 will have a longer campaign, or just more compelling side quests.  Because the side quests in ME1 felt like MMO quests.  I just think that it's crazy how short this game is.  It like you can see the ending before your half way through.

^_^ Try doing all the side quests. Try making a paragon/renegade character. Try another class.....don't rush through a game?

Play on insane....

This.

Any game on easy will be fairly short (not saying you played it on easy). Crank up the difficulty and it will take you ALOT longer.

On normal, it took me 26 hours to do all sidequests, both DLC, and finish the main quest. Which, still, is not very long, but for some reason, I can just keep replaying it. I've played it 3 or 4 times now from start to finish.

Also, the side quests may not exactly be exciting while your doing them, but I did them because each sidequest you do (generally) increases your understanding of the ME universe.

Compared to DA:O it IS short by any account.

I really hope, that BioWare set an example with DA:O's length for future RPGs.

you cant have a game like ME be 100s of hours long. graphics, dialogue, alien boobs, whatever...you just cant make the quality of game ME was, into a 100 hour game. atleast i dont think you can, or it would have already been done.

DA:O is so long because it sucks.

Now, that's your opinion and not a matter of fact, right? ^_^

I really can't see the reason you mentioned. IMO every game COULD be made X hours long without suffering in quality.

BTW and again in my opinion, the sidequests and the battles of DA:O didn't seem to be as repetitive as in ME.

Well, in fact, to make a game like ME with one playthrough lasting as long as DA:O, would certainly need an incredible budget, that leaves maybe even the LotR-Triology behind. Or severe cuts in terms of voice acting etc.

It is quite replayable though. Further replays get shorter because the side quests aren't that fun (some are really cool). My first playthrough was around 40 hours. I'm satisfied with that.

I really don't see how ME was 'better' than DA:O. There was a tonne of awesome dialogue (in fact I found I had to take more time in some dialogue - ie, Morrigan) and the artwork, scripting and overall storyline were top notch (for a game). The 'origins' aspect went a lot further than the glossed-over background story/quests in ME as well. In all I would put them both on-par, and yet DA:O did seem to take a lot longer to play through.

Exactly my thoughts. I went many times through DA:O and none of my runs was under 50 hours, the first two 120+

I personally like mass effect becasue It seems to be more of a casual game. Im in college, have friends I need to keep up with, grades to worry about so I don't have time for a 120 hour long game. A couple hours a day, beat it in a week, play it a few times throught to learn more, and thats all I need.

I found DA:O a little bland. To be honest maybe I didn't give the game a fair chance, but fighting was a bit choppy for my liking. Also some classes were a bit out of control (Mages soloing those summonable out of vials bosses at low levels is insane). I guess I prefer ME because I'm more of an action + shooter fan, and I love most RPGs I play, so its the game for me.

But really any criticism on DAO from me, should be ignored. Like I said, I didn't give the game a fair chance at all. This is like arguing over music genres, its personal taste imo.

@Op my first mass effect playthrough lasted me... I don't even know how long. The game was so interesting that I had to inspect every planet and every corner of original game and DLC. I was just hooked on how amazing it was. I honestly think that it will be longer, especially with the upgraded sidequests/planet scans/planet discovery. They have a LOT of room to work on the small environments of planets, rather than building (and in some cases, copy pasting with different color) a whole planet to explore, which made it a little bland (A few unknowns, some scavenging and maybe some thugs in a bunker on each planet).

Personal taste my patootie! It's a fact, that classic rock music is better than country music! You can't leave important things like that up to taste.

I dont know about ME:1 being too short, but I do know from experience, that longer games dont mean they are better. I played Fallout 3 for literally 100+ hours exploring the living hell out of it, and the majority of that time was straight-up jogging around the Capital Wasteland. (I wonder how much calories I woulda burned if it was me doing all that running around..)

Maybe you are like me, someone who grew up with games that didnt have "side-quests". Where everything was a means to an end. It feels like all those random missions are just there to try to slow you down huh?

Well, I suggest just gritting your teeth and doing the grind. I to burned through my first playthrough, and I ended up not getting the storybook ending that I wanted. (A certain person died on a certain planet, among other things) If you want things to end the way you want them, you will need to go that extra mile.

EDIT: I do hope the Side-Missions in ME:2 will prove to be more, compelling.  Even to the point that they dont feel like "Side-anything".

The opportunity to "grind" for levels by looking for random encounters in the Wasteland of Fallout II has IMO nothing to do with real content, whereas a sidequest is a scripted event.

In AD&D-based games there is no respawn and thus, no random encounter. To gain levels the player needs sidequests, otherwise the game becomes too hard at some point and the endboss is invincible.

In DA:O the random encounters are scripted events, too, but due to a certain scaling of the enemy they seem to be somewhat hard at the start and ways too easy later on.

So, a sidequest is not just there to slow you down

I agree to what you wrote about sidequests in ME2.

It depends if your looking for quality or quantity. ME imho opinion is the better of the two in terms of story and gameplay. And you can't even compare DA:O to ME2, as you will see when loads more people buy it next week.

In my opinion comparing DA:O and ME is useless, they are really different. Only thing they have in common is overall high quality of everything and RPG think expecially in dialogues.

DA:O is a strategic fantasy RPG

ME is sci-fi shooter

I'm not into shooters but loved ME becouse it's really well done, but I'd like it to have even MORE planbets to explore. I enjoyed more the galaxy roaming than the main story, so it woulod be good to have a really huge number of sidequests one does not need to do to complete the game. Everyone would be served. :P

I do love a long RPG, but I also love that Mass Effect is a shorter game. I'm now replaying it for the 8th time, and it never gets old. Also, I consider the eventual trilogy to be one big game, and that one big game will have amazing quality at 75-100 hours of play. It will eat Dragon Age alive in both content and quality; and I LOVE Dragon Age.

You can't compare ME's length to DA:O's - are we forgetting that DA:O took 5 years to develop? You can't create a game of ME's quality and depth and make it 100 hours long whilst also developing it for 2-3 years...it's literally impossible unless you had a production team of thousands upon thousands, and then that would risk diminishing the quality of the product.

As for the actual OP, I think ME2 core story is meant to be shorter than ME1 but the 'side-quests' aren't meant to feel like side-quests - they tie in directly to the main story, they're nothing like the ME1 side-quests and they have influence on the end outcome aswell (ie. who dies, who doesn't), so they're essentially a part of the core story but BioWare have allowed them to be optional for people who really insist on cracking the game fast.

For all intents and purposes, if you do all these "N7 Missions" and also the ally recruit missions you'll feel as if you were doing the main quest even if they are 'technically' optional.

only eleven? because if i jacked it onto casual and put target assist on high i'm pretty sure i could complete the main storyline in... under ten hours

Well to tell the truth, you cant speed through dragon age. in Mass Effect you can speed through it, and to be fair 11 hours is pretty decent gameplay length. Personally i hate dragon age for giving me a good story, but having me shovel through the **** that is combat for hour after hour. It is a matter of personal opinion, but almost at the end of Dragon Age i came upon Mass effect....So that finished of my Dragon age adventure, now it just feels bad compared to Mass Effect.

But i second the notion for a longer campaign i Me2, as long as they can fill it with something meaningful. If i could choose between a 10 hour game that blows my mind all the way, doesn't cut any corners and gives a perfect story. Or a 50Hour game that just drags on, the choice is pretty easy.

But Mass Effect had more then 100 Hours of gameplay, if you were to complete everything (all achievements atleast).

ps: Sorry ofr the wall of text.
