This.
Any game on easy will be fairly short (not saying you played it on easy). Crank up the difficulty and it will take you ALOT longer.
On normal, it took me 26 hours to do all sidequests, both DLC, and finish the main quest. Which, still, is not very long, but for some reason, I can just keep replaying it. I've played it 3 or 4 times now from start to finish.
Also, the side quests may not exactly be exciting while your doing them, but I did them because each sidequest you do (generally) increases your understanding of the ME universe.

I really hope, that BioWare set an example with DA:O's length for future RPGs.

DA:O is so long because it sucks.

you cant have a game like ME be 100s of hours long. graphics, dialogue, alien boobs, whatever...you just cant make the quality of game ME was, into a 100 hour game. atleast i dont think you can, or it would have already been done.
DA:O is so long because it sucks.
Now, that's your opinion and not a matter of fact, right?
I really can't see the reason you mentioned. IMO every game COULD be made X hours long without suffering in quality.
BTW and again in my opinion, the sidequests and the battles of DA:O didn't seem to be as repetitive as in ME.

Well, in fact, to make a game like ME with one playthrough lasting as long as DA:O, would certainly need an incredible budget, that leaves maybe even the LotR-Triology behind. Or severe cuts in terms of voice acting etc.

I really don't see how ME was 'better' than DA:O. There was a tonne of awesome dialogue (in fact I found I had to take more time in some dialogue - ie, Morrigan) and the artwork, scripting and overall storyline were top notch (for a game). The 'origins' aspect went a lot further than the glossed-over background story/quests in ME as well. In all I would put them both on-par, and yet DA:O did seem to take a lot longer to play through.
Exactly my thoughts. I went many times through DA:O and none of my runs was under 50 hours, the first two 120+

But really any criticism on DAO from me, should be ignored. Like I said, I didn't give the game a fair chance at all. This is like arguing over music genres, its personal taste imo.
@Op my first mass effect playthrough lasted me... I don't even know how long. The game was so interesting that I had to inspect every planet and every corner of original game and DLC. I was just hooked on how amazing it was. I honestly think that it will be longer, especially with the upgraded sidequests/planet scans/planet discovery. They have a LOT of room to work on the small environments of planets, rather than building (and in some cases, copy pasting with different color) a whole planet to explore, which made it a little bland (A few unknowns, some scavenging and maybe some thugs in a bunker on each planet).

Maybe you are like me, someone who grew up with games that didnt have "side-quests". Where everything was a means to an end. It feels like all those random missions are just there to try to slow you down huh?
Well, I suggest just gritting your teeth and doing the grind. I to burned through my first playthrough, and I ended up not getting the storybook ending that I wanted. (A certain person died on a certain planet, among other things) If you want things to end the way you want them, you will need to go that extra mile.
EDIT: I do hope the Side-Missions in ME:2 will prove to be more, compelling. Even to the point that they dont feel like "Side-anything".

In AD&D-based games there is no respawn and thus, no random encounter. To gain levels the player needs sidequests, otherwise the game becomes too hard at some point and the endboss is invincible.
In DA:O the random encounters are scripted events, too, but due to a certain scaling of the enemy they seem to be somewhat hard at the start and ways too easy later on.
So, a sidequest is not just there to slow you down
I agree to what you wrote about sidequests in ME2.

DA:O is a strategic fantasy RPG
ME is sci-fi shooter
I'm not into shooters but loved ME becouse it's really well done, but I'd like it to have even MORE planbets to explore. I enjoyed more the galaxy roaming than the main story, so it woulod be good to have a really huge number of sidequests one does not need to do to complete the game. Everyone would be served.

As for the actual OP, I think ME2 core story is meant to be shorter than ME1 but the 'side-quests' aren't meant to feel like side-quests - they tie in directly to the main story, they're nothing like the ME1 side-quests and they have influence on the end outcome aswell (ie. who dies, who doesn't), so they're essentially a part of the core story but BioWare have allowed them to be optional for people who really insist on cracking the game fast.
For all intents and purposes, if you do all these "N7 Missions" and also the ally recruit missions you'll feel as if you were doing the main quest even if they are 'technically' optional.

But i second the notion for a longer campaign i Me2, as long as they can fill it with something meaningful. If i could choose between a 10 hour game that blows my mind all the way, doesn't cut any corners and gives a perfect story. Or a 50Hour game that just drags on, the choice is pretty easy.
But Mass Effect had more then 100 Hours of gameplay, if you were to complete everything (all achievements atleast).
ps: Sorry ofr the wall of text.
