I just got done.

JEBUS. That was an endurance match. From what I understand about Shadowrun, leveling up (gaining Karma) is a VERY slow process... and honestly? Hallelujah. I couldn't handle leveling up and having to cross reference that many factors every few sessions.

Although I hear combat is pretty crazy, too. I may have bit off more than I can chew with this...

Nah, Shadowrun isn't that bad unless you play a Decker or Technomancer( Hacker & Hacker that can connect to the net with their mind) it can take a while to figure it all out.

I loved playing as the Drone Rigger and unleashing a horde of different drones on those pesky corporate thugs.

I love Shadowrun! Back in school I used to create characters when I was bored. I knew almost the entire 3rd Edition rules by heart, including stuff like the cost of equipment, from weapons and cyberware to different ammunition types and vehicle upgrades.

The rules are kind of excessive in some ways, although further editions helped slim them down a little. Still I have fond memories of playing with my friends for several hours in one session, only to realize at the end that the fight we'd been resolving during that time only lasted for about 1-2 minutes in the game world.

Oh, this takes me back to the 90s.

Used to play DSA (very popuar German P&P game, The Dark Eye in English). One of my longest lasting player characters was a priest of Rondra, goddess of war (basically a Paladin kind of character). His name was Thoralion and he had a very rigid sense of honor. Thus he clashed frequently with one of my friends characters, a rogue dwarf, shooting people in the back with his crossbow.

However, my favorite time was DMing the Borbarad campaign. It is by far the best campaign I have ever seen in P&P but it does require a fairly large group if you want to play it right. So as a DM, I used one of my player characters, a mage, to accompany the group as an NPC. It worked great because we used to shift DMs around, so I had already played the mage within this group before the campaign started. He could nudge them in the right direction when necessary and was very useful at times but I decided to give the whole thing a bit of a twist. This campaign exposes the group to black magic a lot and in fact, the main Antagonist is the most infamous black mage of all time, returning from an eon long imprisonment to conquer the world. Over the course of the campaign (which lasted over a couple of years game time but also real time to play) my mage would slowly come to the conclusion that he had to fight fire with fire. Starting out as a grey (or neutral) mage, when the fight became desperate, he became a black mage himself and I altered the last bit of the campaign a little, so that he and his dark powers played a small but pivotal role to defeat the big bad.
However, some time later, after the heroes enjoyed their victory, they had to set out again since my mage, succumbing to the dark powers that he wielded became a threat to the world himself. The heroes had to kill their old friend, who had become evil despite the fact that he always had good intentions.
It was great to have a group who would actually go along and play out the tragedy of the situation.

Oh, and here is the funniest moment we ever had: We used to hike out to an old cottage in the countryside for weekend P&P sessions. The cottage belonged the grandfather of one of my friends. No electricity, you had to get water from a nearby spring in the woods and the whole thing was furnished like an old hunting cottage (trophies and such included).
So when we were there for the first time, I was DMing that particular session and just before midnight, the guys were coming up to the final fight (this was also some sort of black mage, I think). So here we were, sitting in candle light and I was describing the situation: "You enter the dark cavern, only lit by the shimmering flicker of your torches, shadows dancing on the walls. Suddenly, the narrow passageway opens up into a chamber. It is damp and warm. A faint mist is hangs in the air, thickening just above the floor. In the middle of the room stands a figure, clad all in black robes, his hooded head lowered in prayer or meditation. As you enter, the mysterious stranger raises his head bu you cannot see a face beneath the hood, just shadows and two eyes, glowing in an incandescent red. The men raises his hand high and says: " THIS! (click the link, this cannot be written down)

Turns out, it was just midnight and this guy's grandfather had put up a cuckoo clock in the cottage, which went off in exactly that moment. Needless to say the suspense was gone but we all had a pretty good laugh at that one. :D

Ah, good times.

This is the first time I've had to butter and syrup pancakes to try to get into a game. Or do anything for a game related to buttering and syruping pancakes. Also, thanks for drawing my attention to the OotS update.

Ha! My pleasure.

And now I am hungry for flap jacks.

The campaign I am in now is about a band of Runners who use their punk band to act as a front for their clandestine jobs. Well, in almost poetic fashion, our group has arrived at our first gig and are arguing about who is playing what. Although I had long ago solidified myself as the bass player, I am stoking the fires by taking pot shots at the guitar players.

Six strings... who needs 'em! :D

But, in regards to the actual campaign, I haven't made a first real roll as of yet, so this might be a very long campaign, indeed.

I am not currently in a Shadowrun campaign right now, but if I get the chance I think that I would like to try and create a modular borg character; essentially a brain in a jar that can be swapped into various drone chassises to cover multiple roles. I saw this home-brewed ruleset for borg characters in earlier versions and I think that I am going to try and convince any future GMs about updating and using it for a 5th edition game.

I have always been interested in playing as an AI/robot character in the Shadowrun setting, but seeing as how the official rules tend to either make AIs extremely OP/UP and most GMs refuse to allow their players to create one, I figured I would shoot for the next best thing.

I am picturing this character as a corporate experiment, cybered up from a very early age, and has grown accustomed (or at least as accustomed as one can be) to his/her/it's perpetual trans-human state. Being able to slot into an roto-drone and provide some scouting, then dropping back down to the team and plugging into a heavy tank drone would be pretty cool.

I would essentially be a rigger, but way harder to kill.

I was just reading through "Things Mr. Welch is No Longer Allowed To Do in a Tabletop RPG," and number 577 drew my attention.

"No matter how stupid the PC's comment, it doesn't provide an attack of opportunity."

Here's the story of how it became clear my online D&D 4e group didn't follow that rule.

So, I think two summers ago now, I was in an online 4e group that was adventuring in an underground labyrinth. I was playing a Swordmage who took the "Learn Three Languages" feat early on and got "Deep Speech," which is the catch-all subterranean aberration language if I remember correctly and at any rate is what illithids speak in this edition. So, we run across some illithid victims who'd managed to fight them off, and who conclude that we work for the illithids. I try pointing out that from what all I can tell illithid thralls can't talk, but fail the roll needed to talk some sense into them. The rogue tries to Intimidate them out of our way, which the GM had already decided would be an autofail. They attack us.

We go in dealing non-lethal damage, because we don't want to kill these poor clowns, but I go in doing non-lethal damage and taunting them about how tasty their brains are in Deep Speech. The DM rules that they don't know what I just said, but do realize I'm speaking Mind Flayer. They get even more scared. The rogue says "Can I punch him?" and the DM rules that I'm being such a dongweasel that punching me is a free action. Eventually the fight ends, and the rogue makes sure the NPCs are all unconscious before walking up, declaring an attack on me... and rolling an eight. I emote "Trololololol" at him. He spits at me. The DM tells me to roll a Dex check to dodge. I get a one.

It lands in my mouth. ICK.

Ha! What a punchline. Nice job to the DM.

I can see that now. I kinda enjoyed it less at the time, somehow.

One of my GMs created an electric stun-club that uses magic. He calls it the "Rod of Dauntaise Mebrau." Who comes up with stuff like that?
