I try to change my class mid-playthrough. Gibbed's Save Editor seems able to do this. But what happens if I do it? Are there any consequences in the long run, like messed-up story parts or corrupted save files?
Is there an alternative to the save editor, e.g. via console or coalesced editor?
As far as I know, there are no bad consequences, as I have seen someone do it. That being said, I do recommend you back up your save file just in case before you edit it.
I have never done it myself, so someone else will have to provide you specifics. I am sorry I cannot be of more help.
I don't think there should be any problems. There is hardly anything in the game that checks for your class plot wise, and those should be read from the save when needed.
Talents are recalculated each time you go through a load screen to verify that they are correct for the base class, but again that shouldn't matter once you change.
OK, thanks. I changed my class via Gibbed and saved it as a new career. So far it seems to work.
