Hello everybody =)

First of all, how would you all like to play the game, on a technical level? Skype, or through some other means?

Also, we need to decide on a ruleset. I own, am familiar with (and can share) rules for D&D 3rd edition, D&D 4th edition and the official Dragon Age game. I've never actually ran a game of DA before, but I've read the rulebooks back to back and can't foresee any issues I'd have with it. For the other two, I've ran several games.

If you're not at all familiar with the rulesets, I could try typing up a bit of info regarding them.

D&D 3rd edition, by Wizards of the Coast
This game is probably the most played ruleset online, and it's very easy to find lots of stuff online. If you want to make something for your character that does not exist within the core game, this is the game where it's the easiest to nab player-made and already-balanced content off the internet. It also requires no graphics, so it's easier to run over Skype. It is, however, a very lethal ruleset with a higher risk of character death than the other two, and even with the latest rules there's quite a few balance issues.

D&D 4th edition, by Wizards of the Coast
This is easily the most balanced of the three rulesets, and it's the one I have the most experience running. The system itself lends itself very well to modding, so even though there's less content available online that is not necessarily an issue. It pretty much hinges on the use of miniatures though, so I'd need you all to join in on some online map tool while we play so that we can visualise a common game board.

Dragon Age, by Green Ronin
This game is made from the ground up for the Dragon Age setting, with rules for everything related to Dragon Age. The dice system is unorthodox (in a good way), but not difficult to grasp. It's not graphical, thus we wouldn't need a map tool. Since it is a game not many play, we will need to make do mostly with what is in the books already though (but likely it won't be much of a problem).

Theoretically I could throw together some kind of hybrid, but I feel irresponsible letting anybody's first-time RPG experience be with a thrown-together game system with little thought by yours truly. I'm already number crunching and designing a pen&paper game of my own, so I know how much work is required to make anything that doesn't break easily.

Hey Kidd,

First of all, thank you for doing this. I've seen the DnD videos of AD, Scottish, Ashe and Gamermd, and I really love watching it, and looking forward to playing it with you all.

I have Skype, so that is a possibility for me (and otherwise I'll download whatever tool we are going to use)

I have to tell you though, I have absolutely 0 experience playing DnD, so I have to read all the DnD info beforehand. (I don't even know what kind of questions I have to ask you now, besides: What is important to know to get started?

I live in the Netherlands. I know that you live in Sweden, but I have no idea where the other players live. We need to set a date and time (and perhaps before starting getting to know eachother a bit? I don't know)

Anyways, let's have some great fun you guys!!!

Yeah, we'd need to decide dates and stuff. And I'll guide everyone through everything, idiot-proof =) My idea is to sit down with everyone, 1on1, to help them create their characters.

For pen&paper in general, you don't really need to "learn" the game that much. Once your character is created, which is a somewhat long process and can feel daunting at first, it's pretty straight forward. You say "I want to jump," and I tell you what dice to roll. Then I tell you your results. You don't need to know the gritty details of why you can jump a certain distance with a specific roll result if you don't want to; I'll need to handle that any way so I'll just announce the results when I calculate them.

The exact mechanics are different depending on which game/ruleset we use, hence I pretty much need to know which game you all want to play =)

Perhaps we should have a thread for contact information.

I have skype as well and I live in germany, I too have no clue how to play this but it looks like a lot of fun, so we have to wait for the others to see what time and day is good for them so we can get started :D thanks for doing this btw

My preference regarding which DnD campaign we are going to play is the last one: the Green Ronin, original Dragon Age setting.

It could be fun to experience the real Dragon Age (refreshing things I may have forgotten) and it's a great build up to playing Inquisition later :D

But if the majority want to play another campaign that's totally fine by me!

I'll let other members react to this thread now, and see what you guys want to do. If everyone is in, we can set a date and time and go from there?

Kidd, if there is anything you want me to do beforehand, let me know okay?

Hello everyone :) I have never role-played before, so I am very excited and curious. Well, I want to do the Dragon Age game because that's why I'm so interested! I kind of want to test run my inquisitor. So I will have a Dalish elven archer as my character :D

I live in the US....

Upon reading what you all have to say so far, I believe I may need to clarify something. The games I've mentioned are rulesets, meaning they are frameworks for how the game itself works on a technical level. All three games could be used to run a game in the Dragon Age setting itself, and of course that's where our RP would take place - I would have it no other way ;)

That's not me trying to nudge you into picking either of the D&D alternatives, I'm just worried I might not have been clear enough. What makes the Dragon Age RPG by Green Ronin a "generally better fit" for running in the Dragon Age setting is simply because the rules exist to strengthen the Dragon Age narrative, instead of the Dragon Age setting being one of several possible settings to be played in using the D&D rules.

For instance, D&D has clerics who heal instead of mages, while the Dragon Age lore does not. This means that if we were to run a D&D game, those who play a "cleric" on paper would really be playing a mage in the game world. But according to the game's mechanics, they're something else. There are also no built-in rules in D&D for how things like a Grey Warden Joining ritual functions (in case people would opt to become Grey Wardens), though most such things are not difficult to translate to D&D terms any way.

Hope that clarified why I'm asking which ruleset/game people would want to play and gives you a better idea of what it means =) I'd hate to just kickstart an RP without consulting the other players about how they want to play! ^^

As for times we will be playing etc, that is not something we need to decide just yet, I think? I will need to sit down with each and every one of you to help you to create the character you want to play, after all =) That'll likely take a while to finish. But perhaps I should start another thread about people's life schedules?

Hey Kidd,

Because you have the most experience with DnD campaigning, I'll gladly let you decide which campaign we are going to follow, ok?

I think if we have a one on one about the DnD everything will be much more clear to me. And yes, we need to make a time schedule so we can figure out at what time everyone is available

I hope everyone is still excited, willing and able?

Well from that explanation I still think the Dragon Age version would be the best because then if we wanted we could incorporate things like Grey Wardens. And I am already familiar with a term like "mage" whereas a "cleric," well, I thought that was a priest...? lol

The only problem with being willing and able for me is finding a good time and day, plus I couldn't guarantee that I'd be available every gaming session >.> Cause something can always come up at the last minute, but we'd deal with that when we got to it, I guess.

I'd like to :) Honestly, the easiest times for me would be during the summer, when I'm not working. But if it's during the semester, these are my available times:

Sunday-Thursday: 5-10pm (but once Game of Thrones starts I'll be busy Sunday night with friends, lol!)

Friday: 5-late

Saturday: all day-late

Basically I can stay up as late as needed on Friday and Saturday. And obviously during the week I am working.

My time period is US Central Time.

I am mostly available thursday-, friday-, or saturday evening from 20:00 h (8pm) till late late late in the evening/night

So how do we figure out at what time we are going to play? I think there is a 6 hour difference between Europe and America?

Spring break is next week for me. Just letting everyone know that this would be a great time (for me personally) to sit down and figure the game out and make our characters. Perhaps Kidd could help us along :)
