The Joining'd at 50 (it isn't a linear-scale "30 years" deadline like many incorrectly believe, but rather gets worse for you the older you are for it)

Being fairly new to the franchise, would someone point out to me where we learn how the taint and, subsequently, the Calling works?  I did read the entry at dragonage.wikia.com, but as far as I can tell, the effects are accelerated during a Blight with increased exposure to the Darkspawn and may vary from person to person, such that the time to the Calling may range from 10 to 30 years.  Certain magical items can accelerate the taint and other magic may, in fact, cure the taint.

I also read from the Thedas UK interview with David Gaider from 2012.01.14:

TUK: On that note, you've said that it takes about thirty years more or less between the Joining and the Calling, ish, [DG grimaces audibly and visibly]...sorry! What can accelerate or decelerate that process if anything, or is it something you created that you now regret?

DG: It's something I put in Alistair's dialogue that I now regret! Afterwards I was like, "Wow, thirty years is a long time for that time frame." I didn't really intend when I was writing it, and only afterwards when I went back I said "Oh...I guess it does sort of implies thirty years after you take the Calling, doesn't it..." Sorry, after you take the Joining. That wasn't really my intention. But it's out there now so I'm like, okay, thirty years. But the idea is also that it varies. Thirty years is the maximum that you could probably expect. It's going to vary for an individual according to their willpower and the level of their interaction with the darkspawn. During a Blight you can expect that the Grey Wardens are going to have shorter lifespans. Outside of a Blight the Grey Wardens would tend to live longer. We have instances in the game of people going on their Calling after five or ten years. Alistair's thirty year quote shouldn't be taken as gospel, that's the way I like it.

If the taint is analogous to cancer, for example, then time to critical mass would be affected by host resilience, where advanced age would make a minor contribution, but the predominant factor would be time since Joining.  On the other hand, if  the taint is analogous to ionizing radiation, then cumulative magnitude of exposure to the taint would supersede time since exposure.

Thank you!

Roram: You should read "The Calling" it shows several Elder Gray Wardens who were members of the order for Decades, but again this was pre fifth blight by about two or so decades.

I've seen this used by some people as evidence why a warden Loghain should be dead byt he time of Inquisition. I've always felt that this would be an excuse to write Loghain out if they couldn't get Simon Templemen back, but certainly not something that would prevent him from coming back if they could.

It's also a point that he doesn't list one's age or physical fitness as factors leading to the length of a Warden's lifespan until their Calling; he lists "will power and level of interaction with the darkspawn." Now, it's just my opinion that Loghain possesses greater will power than Alistair, one I'm sure many will disagree with, but what's a fact is that Alistair was a warden throughout the whole of the fifth blight, where as Loghain went through the joining just weeks before it's end, and Alistair certainly had greater exposure to darkspawn than Loghain did.

So if anything, Alistair should be closer to his Calling than Loghain.

I don't remember where I read it if it was a codex or a wiki or what, but it seems to me I read something official-sounding about Loghain not making it long past his joining, I forget when but my guess would be DA2 act 2 or soish.

That puts a hole in Loghain appearing, sure, but I wouldn't mind seeing him on his calling or some such.

There was an epilogue that said Loghain served with distinction for an unspecified number of years, earning the respect of his fellow wardens before going on his Calling.

There was also an epilogue that said that Anders returned to the wardens two months after Awakening and served faithfully with them the rest of his life, and an epilogue that Justice said with the wardens, still in Kristoff's body, for several years, becoming a respected member of the order.

That sh*t didn't happen, either.

I know. Again, it's something that could be used to justify Loghain's absence if they couldn't include him or chose not to. It's not something that would preclude his absence if they wanted to include him, though.

I hope he's there to voice a fat Alistair since he's been king for like 15-20 years doing nothing but eating legs of turkey.

I really want to see everyone poop themselves in anger over a fat Alistair.

I'm a fan and was quite happy to learn about this, but this line was hilarious .

I wonder if >my< Alistair will demand to see his son. Yall remember him? The kid with the soul of a god. The rightful heir to the throne of Ferelden. Raised by Morrigan. (Yes, I know your Alistair might be different)

Yeah. I want some drama.

Simon Templeman was recording with Caroline Livingstone on March 20th, so I'm cautiously accepting this as confirmation Loghain shall make an appearance in DA:I; providing you spared his life, of course.

I still dont buy that Alistair looked like he'd had some bad plastic surgury because of a different engine, while other characters from DA:O looked better... Cullen, Nathaniel, Isabella, Leliana...
I think it was the art people hired - a design choice, like the Elves and poor Zevran...

I really hope they can stay true to the originals..in origins

Alistair looked fine it was just the lighting that made him look like a walking corpse, if anything the Art team did a great job in DA2 with  him just put his head on anders and see what I mean

Not true, he was traveling a lot and he's still capable of fighting.

Would be great to see Alistair back in, and I do hope BioWare stays true to our choices.  Whether he's drunk in a bar in Orlais, King of Ferelden or just a random Warden, I'd like to see them all make an appearance.

Obviously I would expect that as King he would play a far greater role in the game than he would as a drunk.

And I would also like to see Loghain back, as he is alive in what will be my first import, though sadly dead in a lot of others.

I expect that drunk Alistair was only a thing for DA2. After Teagan takes him back to Ferelden, he probably helps set him up, leading him into whatever position not-inebriated he's in for DA:I.
