It does not have to be a list of protagonists. They can be assisting characters, NPCs, even villains/antagonists. If you feel like a certain game made a good use of a character that did not originate from a videogame (like the joker in arkham) feel free to use him or her or it too.

My Courier is a lesbian with a heart of gold, who's got an awesome (or at least interesting) backstory (was born, and grew up, around prostitutes) which happened not to conflict with Lonesome Road. Her favourite things are sex (from her prostitute mother) and gambling (from her made-man father). Couldn't add the pink/peach (of her hair) colour into the name.

If characters like your own Courier don't count, then change her for, then Lulu from FFX & -2.

Alma - F.E.A.R. (A combination of Fear, loathing, pity and trying to understand her motives)

Mazzy Fentan - BG2 (Not a detailed character but a lesson in a character that wants to be what they can't.)

Bishop - NWN2 (The best written evil companion in any game I have encountered,, not evil rawr!, not evil stupid, but evil in outlook.)

Jack - ME2 (Just a well done character if you ask me, well written, good background story and tremendous voice acting,)

Dakkon - Planescape Torment (Overall just a very interesting character.)

Annah - Planescape Torment (Sheena Easton as voice actress, enough said.  I have a weakness for the accent.)

Avelline - DA2 (A well written character with believable strengths and weaknesses.)

Irenicus - BG2 (The voice acting of David Warner takes this character to a new level, great villain whom you can empathize with.)

Ravel Puzzelwell - Planescape Torment  (Another villain that you can feel for due to her circumstance.  Well designed character.)

Garrus/Varric - ME/DA  (I lumped these two together because they are similar to me being good friends, sidekicks rare characters that you can just call buddy,)
