I could give less f**ks about the small number of unique endings, but please let the number not be three
Mark Darrah has clarified what the magazine meant by "40 endings" in another thread:
Hey guys,
I just want to clarify the endings in Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age Inquisition's endings variations come in three levels
1. Minor variations based upon choices you make in the game or previous games. There are HUNDREDS of these variations.
2. Major variations based upon larger decisions in the game. There are about forty of these
3. Completely unique endings. There are a small number of these

one less or one more would prevent so much ME3 related bitching on the internet.
But Origins also only had 3 endings...

I want to walk through a town and in the background hear someone yelling: "Or what? You’ll release the mabari, or the bees, or the mabaris with bees in their mouths and when they bark they shoot bees at you? Well, go ahead—do your worst!"

I think you misunderstood me. I personally think the end states differ greatly based on variables decided in-game. So to me, depending on what you did, origins had more than 3 endings. However because Mass Effect 3 had the multicolor endings, that's all the internet thinks about, and if there are only 3 specific ending cinematics for DA:I that opens the door for much needless butthurt and forum rage.

Why cant most decisions in a game be resolved before the game ends? surely by questing and then receiving some sort of payoff with a cutscene showing what your actions have wrought. So much emphasis in creating a multitude of different end states but surely the game would be better by cutting off the bread crusts? and have a few solid main campaign endings that stand the test of time.

I'd much rather see consequences in-game, rather than wait until the end to learn that Peasant Girl #3 married a lord because I gave her a silver that one time.

The one thing I don't understand is everyone else determined what constitutes a different ending. Mass effect has (by internet consensus) what, something like 8 endings? But how are the different colour endings the only definition of what a different ending is? I have playthroughs where the krogan are decimated (no cure) or the quarians are wiped out and the geth as well (destroy) how do these not constitute different endings?
This is actually what Casey Hudson was talking about in the now infamous 'no abc ending' interview. Unfortunately the butthurt masses decided to ignore the context.

To address why the same voices apply to all races, Mike Laidlaw made the following statement: "It's a matter of file size...if we were to have eight voices, two for each race, we would be shipping on 14 discs or something.
Lol... 14 discs, man that takes me back.

Oh man, it's not often I genuinely LOL. But I did this time, sir. I laughed.
Umm so yeah OT, cool stuff. Is it bad that the jar of bees was the most interesting part? Hmm. *skips away*

It wasn't just that one interview. There were five or six that were blatantly deceptive.
(and even in context, Casey set up expectations that the game could never possibly meet. There was an A, B, C ending.)

I laughed so hard...and very loud...at a restaurant! Thats the beauty of BW games. Choices do have consequences, but we will never know when.

Sure. Wasn't that efd731's point? It's easy to set these folks off. If I worked for Bio I wouldn't talk about the endings at all.

Can't the game do both? What's wrong with finding out about some stuff in the epilogue? Unless you like to reload immediately if you don't like a consequence, I don't see the problem.

I can deal with this, as long as #3 has more then 2-3 (at least ideally).
It's pretty much the answer I was looking for. Thank you Mark
.
My issue with Mass Effect wasn't so much the basic fact of it all, or even the stylistic choice of it (I find it fascinating, personally), it is more:
1)Seemingly almost purely color coding it, without variation. EC largely fixed this.
2)Developer quotes not matching the product, for whatever intentional or unintentional reason. Still don't support this.
3)Nonsensical looking. However, I have my own theories I've talked about on these boards and I won't get into that here
. I'll just say that I'm concerned about it, but if the next game addresses it in any good way, I'm cool with it.
So as long as DA:I avoids that, thumbs up!
