Like others have said, I'm also not going to ruin my expectations and assume 40 wholly different endings. What I'm curious about is why they even bothered to state a specific number... I mean, really, that's just tempting scrutiny and debate. Bold Bioware.

I don't care how many endings there are, as long as there's at least one that I'd find satisfactory.

Multiple satisfactory endings would, of course be better.

40 endings.....4 races.........2 genders per race

so lets see here, 10 endings per race, divided by gender and we get 5 endings per character!!!

my math skills cant really be called skills but if this is correct then i can live with it.

If this turns into a "complain about ME3" thread, it will be shut down. Duly warned.

Insofar as DAI goes, at this point you're unlikely to get any of us to comment on anything which would be taken as a promise or be open to interpretation. So take the information for what it is, until we decide whether we wish to talk about it further.

I doubt you'll be able to give an exact answer, but I would presume by 40 endings, you're counting variables? Such as a character surviving in one playthrough, as opposed to them not in another?

As long as the '40 different' endings are handled more akin to DA:O than ME....

I will play the game ever which way until the 4th DA game releases just to get every possible ending.

Buuuut.....

If choices and outcomes are dependant on race...and to some manner, class.....

there are 4 races we can play.....means......10 endings with 4 possible 'flavors'?

here is my probem... when some telling me something has 2-5-10 ending, i expect different endings as in thematicly different endings. Like with Vampire the mascerade. There where 5 endings but 4 major ones, expect the one minor difference of either your with the anarchs or your solo.

While it may not have had "big logic problems" it was a poorly written story, with some very poorly written characters and while the end was not as bad as ME3s, it was still silly and didn't really fit. tbf the vast majority of ME3 was ok, but the vast majority of DA2 was rubbish.

At the risk of a massive derail, I have no idea what you're talking about here. Care to clarify?

I'm surprised they would promise THAT many endings, regardless of how "different" each is from the others. It seems like overkill to me.

I'd prefer something more along the lines of origins, but I'm going to be getting the game anyway so it won't really bother me ultimately, and yes I am one of the many people who raged at ME3, but this is not the end of a trilogy like ME3 was, its just the next part of a story, and while I'd prefer well done endings I won't let "bad" ones put me off supporting the next installment/s

Personally I have the feeling 40 endings is based upon combining different world state variables in all their possible combinations, likely there is only a few core endings to the main conflict.

If I can have just ONE generic fantasy happy ending, I'll be happy. Had enough of dark and bitter sweet.

Fair enough but I have to at least mention that a similar claim was made for another Bioware game that failed to meet even the bare minimum expectations from a lot of people. It's nice to see that you guys are working hard to bring us lots of variation so the ending is unique for each of us, just beg pardon if I keep my hype and expectations very low on this matter.

You know, in Riverdale, CA, a Ford Explorer was hit by a Nissan that decided to run the stop sign. The Ford exploded and killed all 5 passengers-a mother, 29, and her 4 children-8, 6, 4, and 2. The father was in a vehicle trailing them...and there was nothing he could do to save them. So, at age 30, he now starts life over. His entire family gone in an instant. True story. That's life.

There are a lot of things you can complain about or attack or be negative on. Complaining about the ME3 ending is like beating a dead horse. They messed up. Big deal. Let's give it up. I'm willing to give them a fresh break. Will it have 40 endings? I don't know. Maybe it will have 4000 endings. Or maybe just 1 great one. Either way, I am stoked about this game. Everything I have read about what this team is trying to do with DAI makes me happy.

Why do I bring this up? Because it is getting close to crunch time and I know what it is like to be in that position. Encouragement and helpful criticism gets you pumped up. Having someone continually bringing up a past mistake and then rubbing it in your face? Yeah, no one on earth likes that. Yes, these guys get paid to make games. But you know what? They are creative. And creative people love to have people enjoy what they create. We really do.

So, I am choosing to support Bioware on this one. I wasn't a huge fan of DA2, but it also wasn't rubbish. I didn't like the ending of ME3, but that game did so many things right. I don't think DAO deserves the pedestal that a minority , yes a minority, of gamers put it on. It was good, but I trust Bioware to make DAI even better. I choose to give them the benefit of the doubt. Been a fan of there's for....wow I don't even know how many years now. I applaud them for their effort to make things right with their fans. For the hard work they are putting into this game. And yeah, if there are 40 endings with major or minor variations, bring it on. Fall 2014 needs to get here so my PS4 has a good RPG to play.

Ok, I am getting off this soap box. Said too much already. Back to my "cave."

Egads, if we get a cookie cutter ending complete with cozy epilogue slides (a la DA:O) I'll be disappointed. Probably won't start a dozen threads about how much I hate the ending though. I'm just silly like that.

I doubt that I'll agree with Bioware's criteria for what constitutes a "different ending".

But I wouldn't care if there was only one ending.

I wouldn't put much credit into "40 different endings" but I wouldn't be dissapointed if they were talking mostly about epilogue slides either. I thought the epilogue slides were a great way of showing the outcome of minor events without having to put in much devlopment time, plus the 4 diffent outcomes to the arch demon battle.

So, out of the blue, here comes Batman with an amazing speech. Although the anecdote at the beginning made me quite sad.

This is exactly what they are talking about. There are not 40 ways to kill the Archdemon (or whatever the main quest happens to be) the are enough world variables that the can be 40 different end game states for each player.

For all the gripes about ME3 there were quite a few end states in terms if genophage cured or not, Tali's "condition" and so forth plus the RGB variations of each of those combos. All the RPGs now can hype that by taking all the combinations of "decisions" you make and calling it a different ending.

It will probably be something like Origins, I think: DAO had 4 main endings, but many different choices along the way that changed the ending / epilogue.

pretty much.

Still 40 endings, I call BS on that, because I can't see it happening and BW also promised 16 endings for ME3 and we all know what we got there.

It's kind of obvious people bring up the ME3 debacle and no wonder a lot of people remain skeptical.

I just hope that Bioware has learned it's lesson and that they will do just fine  :)

I'd like to reiterate for what feels like the hundredth time that Mass Effect and Dragon Age are made by two separate teams. It's unfair to hold Mass Effect 3 against the DA team.

I'm all for holding out for clarifications instead of making dire proclamations and doom and gloom posts. I'm excited. I'm really excited. I just want the game to be good. As long as the ending is good, I don't care. I loved DA2, but I was unhappy that we fought both Meredith and Orsino no matter what we did. Avoid that? I'm thrilled. I do think that the ending wouldn't have been as...the way it was if they had more time and knew the extension wasn't going to happen ahead of time.
