There's no iconic gear, so she will have to be able to take off the headdress, even if she starts with it, and all displays of her character pre-game feature it.
Is Viv bald?

On the good side (not really), I know for sure who will be one of the closet companions that I'll never put in my party... Unless his personality turns out to be interesting.

Balder than a baby's ass.
I shall knock off her silly hat and gaze upon her dome and rub her for good luck.

... I prefer a nice head full of hair myself. Cassandra has already very short hair, and that Solas dude is completely bald. I hope there will be some variation. Long hair is underrepresented in games. I know it's difficult to animate and such, but still.
Also, isn't everything supposed to be over the top in Orlais, including the hair? How do you create all those fancy hair trends Leliana described with a bald head? Unless you use a wig of course.

There is also a tremendous urge to slap that ball Benny Hill style.

You just answered your question right there, the "but still" notwithstanding. The longer the hair, the more you have to worry about the physics of it, as well as the possibility of it clipping (particularly when you have models that change outfits and/or headgear). Some games will have physics specifically for hair, while others have to hand-animate the hair when they do the model's regular animations.
Not that this requires someone to have really short hair or be completely bald--that just tends to limit hair to shoulder-length. In Vivienne's case, it's a stylistic choice. I'm not really sure what the kerfuffle is, to be honest. The followers aren't created to provide an array of different hairstyles so much as different personalities and appearances--and if someone really wants to suggest Vivienne, Solas, and Iron Bull present the same look, I'd say they're out of their mind.

It was not really a question. I know why long, flowy locks are unlikely to be included, but the suggestion of long hair can be given with a braid, a bun at the back of the head or a ponytail (preferably one that's at least a bit longer than Shianni's). That's more what my "but still" entailed than the expectation that I would see a resemblance of my RL mane in the game.
Though the dwarven beards clipped a lot through armor as well, and apparently that was thought to be acceptable, so I guess it is also a matter of deciding whether the good (awesome beards) outweighs the bad (clipping).
I am aware that the game is not a barber commercial and is not going to advertise all the new trends for hair, but I'm not sure why you would separate different hairstyle from appearances (at least that's how I interpret that sentence). Hairstyle is an important aspect of one's appearance, imo, and it can say something about personality as well (very short hair for more practical types, for instance). It's not the only or even the defining aspect, but it is part of it, and that's why I would like to see some variation.

And "out of their mind" surprises you for this place? But hey, at least we're diverse in our ramblings. It wasn't two weeks ago we had a thread asking for more variety in baldness patterns for the Inquisitor, after all. As a man with a scalp most resembling a bowling ball, I approve.

I don't recall anyone except Gaider mentioning Iron Bull here, so I thought that last remark was not really necessary. I also don't see why you feel the need to jump on the "out of their mind" bit and turn it into a more general insult about the boards you yourself have made over a thousand posts on. I'm all for variety in hairstyles, both in baldness patterns and longer hair.
I just hope to see that variety for companions as well, which we probably will.

Ah, okay. Sorry about that.
I think it's not really as bad as some people like to say, so I get a little tired of the "out of their mind" and "toxic" claims that get thrown around so easily. But I won't deny things can get a little intense and that passionate debates can be held about silly things. ![]()
