I'd rather Rhys not be a companion, actually. WEll, I'd love him to be but only if Evangeline was one too. I don't want those two to be split up.

It'd be funny see them face palm when they hear all that Templar V Mage debate amongst some drunks in an inn.

Also, didn't the writers list 10 different foods the companions compared to?  When I made a list of my speculations, I had one extra because I was assuming 9 companions.  Has that been addressed before?  I haven't been able to read all the companion speculation threads so I'm not sure.

Imo i don't think that the "Food" thing is enough to base the 10 companion theory one...and here is a quote from the Dragon age website;

"Lead a party chosen from nine unique, fully-realized characters – each of whom react to your actions and choices differently, forming complex relationships both with you and with each other."

that's why i don't believe in 10 companions...

It is entirely possible, Origins had a 6:3 male to female ratio as well (not counting the DLC character).

Where is this 6:3 male to female ratio for Origins?

(not counting Dog or Shale.)

It's 4 to 3.

Morrigan, Leliana, Wynne

Alistair, Zevran, Sten, Oghren, Loghain

I'd call it 5:3, but I imagine some of the confusion here rests in your not counting Loghain, which is understandable.

Loghain and Alistair are Mutually Exclusive.....you cant have both in party so they count as 1.

So it's more like:

Alistair/Loghain, Sten, Zevran, Oghren

Wynne, Morrigan, Leliana

As I assumed. I still count them as the separate characters they are on the merit that a person who chooses to spare Loghain experiences both as companions in one file but it's a matter of preference.

It seems kind of unfair, since we don't really know if there will be characters like that in this game.

So 5:3 in DA:O

In DA2 it is. Aveline, Bethany (can get her more often than Carver), Talis, Isabela, Merril.

And Varric, Fenris, Sebastian, Anders and (Carver).

so 4.5:5 in DA2. I give Carver half a point since he only shows up if you are a mage.

Even if it is going to be 6:3 in DA:I, those who want to can stll get to use an all female party etc.

Not worried about this at all.

Why does the gender ratio matter? surely the quality of the characters is more important.

Even if it did matter to me, I would still feel that way. I imagine for most people that's the case, but it still bothers some of them regardless.

What about the possibility of companions leaving and being swapped out? After all, in Origins, Alistair can be replaced by Loghain, and in DA2, you can have either Bethany OR Carver depending on your starting choice. So it may be the case that while there are 9 slots for companions, we might actually have something like 10 characters to choose from.

i think would be awesome i hope they do

Alistair, Sten, Zevran, Oghren, Loghain and Dog (could have sworn he was called "boy" in more than a few instances) = 6

Wynne, Lelianna and Morrigan = 3

But not counting Dog it would be 5 : 3

And see my comment about Loghain/Alistair above.

They're choosing not to count Loghain because he and Alistair are mutually exclusive. It's a matter of how one approaches the subject. You and I would say five or six; they would say four. I like to be thorough, so I roll with six and I throw Shale in with the "real" women.

By who's count? You may count it that way but do the developers and marketing department?

Then how would you count the gender ratio in DA II as Bethany and Carver were mutually exclusive?

Again, it's not like we know if any characters in DA:I are mutually exclusive. It might even be 6/3 BECAUSE 2 males are mutually exclusive for some reason, if it ends up that way.

I think it has to do with wanting more equal representation of genders, which I am completely behind. As a female it is quite refreshing to see a list of companions that has a decent amount of women characters that aren't the "typical" portrayal of women in video games. Of course Bioware is very good at doing this and many will expect them to keep doing so.

On the Origins ratio: I agree with Jaulen on the 4:3 numbers. Dog shouldn't really count because... well... he's a dog. But I can see where you are coming from with Loghain. In that case the ratio should be 5:4 (including Shale).

Loghain was called the "secret companion" and not marketed. He was never seen as a full companion because you only get him for the last section of the game (after the Landsmeet). Shale is female and despite being DLCs, everyone who bought the game new got her. Nobody care if dog is a male or female, he's not humanoid.

The core team in DA2 is perfectly balanced: 2 of each class, and an even gender ratio.

The thing with DA2's mutually exclusive companions is that it's dependant of your class, and not an in-game choice (like in DAO), I tend to count them out (mostly because we don't see them for half of the game) but even between the siblings, the gender ratio is even.

Given what we saw with DA2, it's likely we'll have a 5:4 gender ratio

Could be 4:4 if we got a dog again (or another type of beast).
