I've seen posts referencing more companion reveals in April.   Have BioWare stated that they intend to reveal ALL the companions before game release? If so, that's.....extraordinary.

They're going to do one a month until the game releases, they said. It's possible they wont get through all of them.

If the game releases in September as some have guessed, they will only be able to go through six without doing extras in some of the months.  We could only get all nine with one per month if the game releases in late November.

I suspect they will avoid revealing at least two of the companions--which may be why we have had no hints whatsoever about those companions as yet.  Those companions are probably meant to be a surprise or a secret, and we won't know about them until the game is released and we've played it (or until there are leaks).

How many they can get through also depends on if they're eventually going to do a thing for Varric and Cassandra. They said it wouldn't be next time. It's possible that they don't feel like they need a special intro, since they were in the past game.

Okay, thank you. I guess that allows them to still keep a secret or two from us. I've actually been pleasantly surprised that we've been given confirmation for so many of the companions already. I don't recall being given this much info before DA2 came out, so I'm really enjoying this.

Well, they also said some characters may have "changed substantially" and we kind of haven't seen that either. So, I think maybe they might have just stretched the truth a little and said maybe characters would maybe be cut or changed substantially so we wouldn't think we knew the information way before we were supposed to.

Maybe not, but I wouldn't necessarily think it's absolutely true. I'm not sure they really meant it definitely happened, I think they were just saying maybe it could happen.

This is definitely a possibility. Not to impugn David's motives or anything, but I can see why they'd want to tell a white lie for a bit rather than coming out and saying "haha guys the entire survey is 100% accurate, now we'll have nothing to reveal for the next year".

That said, we still haven't seen Cole in *anything* (except for David's tumblr posts I suppose). Unless they're deliberately keeping him under wraps, or he's not in any concept art because he's invisible, he could've been the one that was cut.

Oh I get the desire to see more females in prominent roles in popular media however to just throw more women in prominent roles merely to satisfy the desire to see more women in prominent roles kind of trivializes the issue, I would rather see strong, believable female characters because they fit the role rather than to pander to the desire. If the writers only include 3 female party members because there were other characters they had in mind because they felt they added more to the story then so be it.

Beside the person I responded to seemed to want more female party members so they would have more members to choose from to create an all female party which gives me the impression they aren't really asking for more female characters out of a desire for equality but the desire for something else.

Let's flip what you said around for a moment:

'Oh I get the desire to see more males in prominent roles in popular media however to just throw more men in prominent roles merely to satisfy the desire to see more men in prominent roles kind of trivializes the issue, I would rather see strong, believable male characters because they fit the role rather than to pander to the desire. If the writers only include 3 male party members because there were other characters they had in mind because they felt they added more to the story then so be it.'

Women are the only ones who have to justify their existence in media. This idea that we should just hope for a few quality women characters over a saturation of not amazing women characters is weird, because no one would ever make a similar comment about men. Oh we can't have that many male characters what if they aren't all strong and believable! (nevermind strong is subjective and if all women characters were 'strong' it would actually detract from the quality and diversity of the women characters)

So yeah...I'm gonna be super bummed if there isn't another female companion. Plus just generally, it'd be nice to see the writers announce someone completely out of the blue, who no one was even guessing at.

Maybe the game releases in October and they don't do a 'get to know Varric'...cause...well...we do? I want the game before November if at all possible! I'm not as patient as I should be haha

Though for what it's worth, I consider Cole's presence in the "companion" part of the survey to be hugely powerful evidence in favour of him being in the party. Ditto with Dorian. I just can't imagine how or why they'd be cut after getting bios written and concept art created, in August 2012 - which, at the time, was only a year before their original release date.

We know an Asunder character will be in Inquisition, there's a space for another dagger rogue, and Cole would be written by Mr Gaider himself. Heck, his appearance in Asunder might've been largely a way to set up his character for a role in Inquisition, since his story arc clearly isn't over.

We were specifically told that not all of the characters in the survey made it into the final game though. And as far as I'm aware neither Dorian nor Cole had concept art in the Survey (there is nothing indicating that the guy holding a trident was supposed to be a representation of Dorian).

I'd say Cole is likely simply because of how much he's been discussed by Gaider after the Survey (such as commenting about how he would never be a romance option). The only things really standing against him are how awkward he would be to integrate into the game, which is somewhat mitigated by the fact that they were ever seriously considering him for a companion at all, and that the gender ratio is currently skewed, which could be alleviated by the second unknown companion being female.

Cole is invisible, though. Wouldn`t that be odd to have a character that can basically just kill every enemy in the game by walking up to them and slitting their throat?

They would probably just alter the element for game mechanics. Like, he'd have a % chance of not being seen before attack.

They could do something like that, I suppose. If they do that, I hope they also add that % when it comes to positive effects too. If a mage casts a spell on him that would give bonuses, for example. % chance of that working at all, if he is invisible.

His bio calls him a rogue, so they must've thought it would work at some point.

I imagine that there'd be some explanation given, like Cole needs to concentrate in the heat of battle and can't maintain his invisibility. Maybe the invisibility is an activated ability, or maybe he consciously learned how to turn it off after Asunder.

It will be fun to find out, in any case. Truth be told I am very interestd in Vivienne, at the moment. I think she is the first dark skinned character in the series so far? I am wondering where her family originally came from and all that. Could be a huge source of brand new world info right there. 1 companion spot reserved for my first playthrough confirmed.

My post a few spaces above that one indicated that I don't necessarily believe the line that not all of the survey characters made it into the game. I think it's more likely that all of them did.

Without wanting to sound conspiratorial, I think it's possible for a developer to be slightly misleading in the interests of keeping the companion roster under wraps for as long as possible. After all, they'd hardly admit it if the survey was 100% accurate ("here's five or six confirmed companions, now we have no characters to talk about for the next eighteen months until launch").

Even more so because the survey was absolutely not meant to be leaked in the first place, and confirming it would give it legitimacy.

I think she's from Rivain, just like Isabela. And Duncan, for that matter. (?)

(Rivaini people are meant to be dark-skinned - I think many of them should look like Vivienne, it's just that the old engine was terrible at rendering darker skin tones.)

"In the game" is not the same as "in the party." Cullen's in the game, but I don't think he made the cut, as much as I want him.

Ahh. I didn`t know that. I though riviani were more "spanish". She looks interesting anyway. Her "climber" mentality is something I would probably despise, though. But often i find that characters I hate the personality of, often tend to be the most interesting characters, or the character I like the most anyway.

I never thought race was really a thing inside of species in Dragon Age like it is in the real world. You see people (humans, elves) in different skin tones just all over. I didn't really think it was related to nationality or anything.

He's not invisible in the Fade, and the Fade Tears could possibly cause him to be visible all the time, or at least while near a Fade Tear.  And, even if he is invisible, the Inquisitor's connection to the Fade might cause the Inquisitor to be able to see  him at all times, even if other party members can't--which may lead to some interesting dialogue.

"Who are you speaking to, Inquisitor?"

"Cole."

"Who's Cole?"

"Cole's the person I was just speaking to."

"There's no one else here but you and I."

And so forth.

Of all the leaked survey characters that "might not make it" to the final game, smart betting odds would be on either Dorian and Cole not making the cut. Making concessions for all the Tevinter-yet-not-really locations we might be dealing with not rendering Dorian useless... that leaves Cole getting the cut. I think this mostly because (while not having read all of Asunder yet... so... spoiler free please) I don't see how his presence would benefit the Inquisitor when they already have a Fade expert in Solas.

To be more specific, I think that all the characters who were designated as party members in the survey will end up being party members.

And of the ones that weren't called companions but did get art, every single one has subsequently turned up in other concept art or gameplay (if you count the spear-staff man as Mahogany/Dramatic Hands Man, which I do).
