It's what the main site says, and it's what I've seen in various news articles.

 

You are also correct that there will be no DLC characters, unless the devs really surprise us.  I wish we could still get some extra characters, but due to the complaints about Day One DLC and characters intentionally stripped from the game, we can forget that now.  I do wish we could still have DLC characters, but in order to do that, the devs will have to rework the code to allow for characters to be added in after the fact, something that they haven't done thus far.

That would be the expertly named,dramatic hands moustache guy, people have been speculating on who it is, some say Rhys from the book Asunder others say Dorian the renegade magister from the leaked survey, no one is certain right now

The official site stated it, plus magazines. An Gaider said once we won't get 10 companions.

*Only* 9? that's plenty imo lol. Just remember that we had 9 full time companions in ME2 (apart form the DLC characters that is). Quote from the Dragon age website:

 

"Lead a party chosen from nine unique, fully-realized characters – each of whom react to your actions and choices differently, forming complex relationships both with you and with each other." So from what i gather, it's confirmed.

The website says nine. 

 

It's possible some are secret or hidden, but at the moment the best number we have is nine.

They already stated that 'some' will remain secret, so at least two won't be announced.

 

I truly hope this is the case. I am just as excited as everyone else for this game, but I also like a bit of intrigue and mystery. What's the point if everything is released beforehand? All this clamoring for ALL THE INFORMATION (!!!) is driving me nuts. I can't possibly imagine how aggravating that is to th devs.

I will probably wait until I know all the companions before buying the game, honestly. It's pretty base information. It's not like it really tells you much about the story at all. I think it's basically like the kind of thing you see in the blurb on the back of a novel. It's just some extremely basic points about the main cast.

 

Not that I'm saying we need to know them all right now, months before release. But I don't really see why we wouldn't want to know before we actually buy the game. It's just such basic information.

I'd probably squee if Cullen is a companion. I've always liked how he grows through the games. Though... I really like "dramatic mustache mage" for some reason, as well. I can picture him as the support-tailored mage companion for Inquisition, like we've had for all of the previous games - Wynne, Anders, Finn, etc. Just picture it;

The party lay broken upon the ground, surrounded by foes. As death claims the Inquisitor,  all s/he can whisper is... 

"...Call... in the mustache..."

And then, in a flash of light, the mage himself materializes, reviving the entire party with a manly twirl of his mustache.

Make it happen, BioWare. And while you're at it, make him a love interest for both genders, so all can revere his fantabulous facial hair.

I don't really think it will be an animal. The site that says 9 companions says they will have certain reactions to your choices and complex relationships with you and with each other. I think that's kind of a stretch for what something like Dog's interaction really was.

I'd like a mabari sub-companion. In Origins, I used the Extra Dog Slot mod to have the pooch with me without sacrificing a "true companion", and I enjoyed having the Hawke hound with me in DA2 as well. I'll be very suprised if we won't have the traditional Mabari sidekick in at least one part of Inquisition.

The pokemon dog in DA2 was abit wierd, though. I`d rather they make a proper animal companion. Gnarls Barkley could do the voice acting.
