I wonder how the Cullen fanbase would react if he wasn't a companion, but  he was a major NPC - whom also just happened to also be a love interest. Similar to Kelly (Kind of), Cortez and Samantha in Mass Effect. It would be an interesting decision IMO, though I'd personally be torn up about it. I'd be disappointed I couldn't take him with me, but also happy that I could still romance my forbidden fruit of Dragon Age... just not in the way I was expecting.

I wouldn't mind this

I'm thinking this might happen too. I hope the non-companions NPC's that he might be one, actually have pretty major roles. Like, you have to talk to them a lot, make decisions regarding them, and all that jazz.

If we really have that whole council thing, Cullen might be like your main "Soldier" guy at the main keep

I'd be okay with this. Though, with the approval system, I'm not sure how it'd work if a character couldn't be around for our decisions.

I'd prefer if he was a companion, but as that is not looking likely anymore, I certainly wouldn't turn down the chance to romance him even in a NPC role.

I have wondered if they would ever bring non-companion love interests in. But I don't know... all the romances outside of primary companions in ME always ended up feeling a little neglected.

I dread to think what will happen if Cullen isn't a companion or LI. Riots in the streets, looting of game shops, EA stocks drop 30% in value, sparking an economic crash that plunges the world into a new dark age, etc.   :?

Pretty sure most of us are already anticipating this (him being a major NPC) but actually are thinking we won't get to romance him :( Which is better than nothing, but still :(

If NPCs are going to be love interests, I hope there are more than 4 love interests. I don't really want to give up a companion romance for an NPC romance.

I will also be super pissed if they make the straight LIs companions and the gay LIs NPCs, like ME3, but I'm sure Cullen would be either straight or bisexual.

Supposedly, even if they're not in your party when you make the decisions, they'll still know. So no more saving mages left and right and only bringing Fenris around on anti-slavery missions  <---my main method of romancing Fenris

Yeah canonically Cullen does like women so it would make 0% sense if he were suddenly gay. Of course, I'm banking on him being bi ;)

Hehe! That made me laugh :D ,Though we already expect this to happen to be honest,in fact is the number 1 theory discussed among the fans about Cullen, that he will likely return as a major NPC or the leader of a faction, perhaps even an advisor to the inquisitor...So no riots I guess.

If you're talking about this one by nightfall edits, tis fanmade, sadly.

^ This makes me want to weep with disappointment. Everyone speculating on the forums seemed so certain he would be a companion last year, and now it seems all are convinced he's completely off the companion roster. :crying: I feel my hope fading away...

If he hangs around the Inquisition main base as a major NPC, there'd probably be a fair bit of content anyway in terms of quests and conversations.

I'm in two minds about non-party LIs: as much as it can help by providing more options, I wonder if it's worth it when those options aren't treated the same as the actual party. Steve and Sam in ME3 were welcome (and long overdue, some might say) but there were several instances where companion LIs had scenes that they didn't get.

I want a few companions that you can't romance. I really like that aspect of Origins and didn't like it about DA2 (I'm not going to count the siblings, of course). You couldn't romance, Wynne, Sten, Oghren, et cetera, and I like that. Not only do I like not everyone being around the same age, I also like that not all companions are attracted to you. Another aspect of companions I'd like to see is a shift towards the companion system in Origins. I'm not talking about gifts that give giant boosts in approval, I mean the fact that your companions can hate you. In DA2 they might disagree with you, but they still ultimately respect you, whereas in Origins they can end up hating your guts, even leaving if you push them too far. I also like being able to get rid of them, though that seems to only be the case with Fenris and Isabela, as far as I've seen (not including Sebastian and companions that can be killed, since it's towards the end).

He's clearly in the game in some form though, if that's any consolation. And like others have said, it sounds like a major role, since his voice actor has been called back a few times. If he's not a companion, it seems he'll be some sort of major NPC.

(I suspect Cullen will be the Inquisition's military commander or advisor, it was a good theory that someone else thought of and we were discussing it in this thread)

I'm done with Cullen, to be honest. A cameo is one thing, but I don't want him to have a role in this game. He has no business involving himself in Orlesian political affairs, and I'm getting pretty sick of him at this point. The more we see of him the less I like him.

You couldn't romance Aveline or Varric in DA2. There were just less companions that you couldn't romance because there were less companions, generally.

They said they're not doing a rivalry system this time.

I kind of agree with this theory, his presence in the war room along with Leliana(which I'm almost positive is an advisor)and Scribe girl(the same here) and the concept image "new home"where there is a tiny figure that resembles him,and seems to wave at the inquisitor,(though I think he may be guiding the inquisitor's soldiers),indicates that he may be one of the advisor groups.
Although Moustache guy is also a possible candidate for this role.Besides he resembles a chevalier as some people have noted, and since we'll spend a lot of time in Orlais seeking out allies,he is a better candidate to fullfill that role.(Others though speculate that he is Dorian.)

Not everyone. I think that Cullen will be a companion and probably the last one revealed. He's on the fanart drawn by someone who knows Bioware and where so far six companions ( if we don't count the grey warden, but I'm sure he is a part of the team ) are confirmed,  Cullen was also on the leaked survey, and some other pics, like, sera, the grey warden, Iron bull or Solas. We also somewhat need the point of view of a templar or at least an ex-templar , or a renegade templar in DAI. So yeah.

Also, everyone was convinced that Alistair wouldn't be in DA:I because his voice actor wasn't called yet, everyone was wrong...

I might be wrong, but I bet that Cullen will be a companion !   ( didn't say an LI huh... )

I would love to have Leliana back as a companion. Definitely one of my fav characters in Dragon Age. But as long as one of the final 2 companions is a female I'm cool with it. Having a 5/4 party would be nice. I have never understood all the fuss over Cullen (perhaps someone could explain?).

@davidgaider

@SeeTheFlickers I suppose that depends on who you assume the three warriors are, and whether we only have three warriors, doesn't it?

David said this in response to a Cullen fangirl who was sad he wouldn't be a companion. He could've just ignored her comment, so maybe it's something.

If he's anything like me he's just kinda flustered with people connecting dots without a pen. An even approach to classes wasn't even in Origins and 2 and just because there are nine companions now doesn't mean it will be this time, to say nothing of the fact that we're currently sitting at only one companion who is absolutely confirmed as a warrior.

Cullen is the most conventionally attractive male out of the possible remaining speculated male characters and none of the other males we've seen so far are conventionally attractive. That explains most of it.
