Fans like it when something they've been rooting for gets included in a title. When it's something they haven't been rooting for, but which others have, then it becomes "fan service" and a bad thing. In the case of Cullen, that gets laced with some extra venom because the fans who would be most excited about his inclusion (if, indeed, he's included in the way that some appear to assume) are both female and likely interested in romancing him.

And, for the love of God, why would we try to make them happy? To what new low has BioWare sank?

Maker bless David Gaider. <3

Are these some of the David Gaider quotes you're talking about?  Edit: bolded for emphasis

Then after someone says Cullen has objectively justifiable reasons to appear in DA:I DG said

I'm SO glad he said that because I thought I was going crazy. I kept seeing all of these complaints about how rabid Cullen fans were taking over everything and the entire time I kind of looked around and said "where? Who? Where is the tidal wave of Cullen waiting to crash over me and the entire Dragon Age fandom?" I also saw many more instances of people complaining about the mythical Cullen brigade than the actual Cullen brigade, and I say this as someone who isn't a huge Cullen fan and just casually likes the guy. I'm glad I 'm not the only one who isn't seeing what all of the hullabaloo is about.  :P

Cassandra is not attractive imo. I liked her in Dawn of the Seeker,... but the model in DA:I is kinda boyish. To much jawbone... not very feminine. As for Sera: Nope. We have already seen her weird haircut... somehow mohican... like those modern ugly undercut haircuts.

I want a companion that looks actually feminine... not "manly woman goes to war".

Your loss, mate, Cass looks gorgeous, with those armor-piercing eyes.

Looking at the current information that was released about the game the Dales will play their part. It might be something like the Dalish elves are taking the opportunity to take back their homeland while everyone is fighting each other.

Sera doesn't look like a Dalish elf as she lacks the facial tattoo's. Looking at her she must be a City Elf and a personality of Jack from Mass Effect and Isabela from DA2.

I wonder if we will get a Dalish Elf character with a vested interest in getting Halamshiral back.

I have a sneaking suspicion that those that find Cassandra "ugly" felt the same way about Aveline.  I fully agree with you here.

<dripping with sarcasm> Heaven Forbid a woman doesn't look uber feminine when she's a battle hardened veteran.  I can't imagine why a warrior like that might feel looks are not as important as not dying.  Nope, they must be models on the battlefield, otherwise they are ugly.

Give me a break.  Cassandra looks awesome and I dig that she looks unconventionally pretty.  I'm sure that Vivi, "Sera" or a possible new female character will be more suited to their tastes.

Er, not entirely true.  David has said more than once that the more demanding the fans are for a companion, the less likely he is to include them.  Recently, he revealed that the last time he included a character "for the fans" was Oghren in Awakening and he said he isn't doing that again.

Besides, we're a rather small percentage of the game base here in the forums.  While I'm sure there is plenty of love outside of here and Tumblr for him, I think you're overestimating his popularity among the more casual fans.

Oh and most of Cullen fans are going to buy the game anyhow.  Cullen would be an awesome bonus for them, but not the main reason for their purchase.  At least as far as I can tell.

This!

I suggest you read Masked Empire once it is released (next week...or prepare a spoiler proof suit), I've read a few bits and pieces and the elven stuff isn't what people are expecting I think.

Also, the Inquisitor, if elven, is Dalish. I doubt we are getting a Dalish companion because of that.

I forgot about the book. I have to give it a read after my current Pratchett book.

Thank you for the answers to my question. I still won't really care if he is in the game but now I kinda? understand why he appeals to some people.

In any case I'd rather have a character that hasn't appeared in the last two games as a companion. I wouldn't mind having him as an a major NPC though.

It took me a second.  I take it you're referring to Cullen?

No worries.  It was the "seen in the last two games" part that finally gave it away.  Cullen or no Cullen, it would be nice to finally get a real Templar's perspective for once.  We have yet to see that in our party.  We've had our (mostly) responsible and reasonable apostates in our group.  Now I think it's time to get a Templar's viewpoint in there.  After reading Asunder, I really ended up liking the character of Evangeline and I'd like to see someone like her in the future.

So you are saying battle hardened soldiers can't be pretty? Don't let the feminism hear that :P

I was just saying that I would like me some pretty female... I don't consider any of the revealed characters as pretty...

If all the people in here can demand for some cullen, I want the rights to demand for something not necessarily as specified... just pretty :)

First, I didn't say Aveline or Cassandra was unattractive.   I said that Cassandra was unconventionally pretty, which is very true.  I find her lovely and Aveline is too, just the way they are.  I never had a thing for Aveline since she looks uncannily like my sister-in-law, but she's attractive nevertheless. I just despise it when folks try to insist that the female warriors of the group look like models.

Secondly, I apologize if you don't find the female characters revealed to be of your taste. I honestly hope that changes for you. No reason to call any of them ugly though.  We also only have character kits for two of the ladies at this point and we don't even have much current art for Sera.  Give it some time and you could be surprised.

Third, I don't see a lot of "demanding" for Cullen.  I see mostly wistful thinking, and a lot of fans thinking that it would be nice.  On the other hand,  I have seen a lot of people tired of Cullen or that hate him putting a very negative spin on the fans' actions.  Even David Gaider himself commented that he has seen people be far more vocal about hating Cullen than those that want him in the game.

Edit: Also, "the feminism?"  I really hope you meant feminists...

Wait, how is Vivienne not considered conventionally pretty? I think she's up there with Jack as the most gorgeous human companion BW has done.

I think he means that she isn't attractive to him.  Not that she's ugly in this instance, but she isn't to his taste.  For me, Vivienne is a bit too flashy (and so far) a bit too caustic for my LI.

Based on the sorts of things our first-glance treatment has afforded us, I can't quite imagine myself playing the sort of character that'd be a good fit for Vivienne, so if she's an LI and doesn't greatly diverge from her currently-apparent stances I won't experience it firsthand.

I don't mind, though. I've had five Mass Effect runs and I've still only romanced three characters. I love damn near everyone in that series to death but there are several LIs I don't think I'll ever get around to pursuing.

Ok, i have been reading up on this thread and all i can say to the people (that i think perhaps a lot of people who don't get why Cullen are so popular) wanting Cullen as a hump buddy is;

"I don't hate you because you are a Cullenist, i hate you because you won't shut up about it"

Thanks for the quote Carver ;)

No flame, but this is how i look at the "dilemma" :) :) :)

Better finish with some smiles so i won't get shot lol

Jack and Vivienne are by far the most gorgeous companions BW has done in my opinion. But I understand not being attracted to them. Jack was more like a brutally honest BFF throughout my ME playthroughs and I have a feeling that my Inquisitor will be sipping wine with Vivienne as my DA:I Qunari's BFF. I think Vivienne is a little too good for my Inquisitor.

Which is a little odd as so far she reminds me of Morrigan, and Morrigan is my second favourite DA:O romance. Mind, in any game I didn't romance her Morrigan really was my Warden's closest companion. I don't think I ever did a playthrough where I purposely tried to upset her.

So on topic this time: i would like to see another female atleast ( i don't care about the romance option on this because i never romance the women anyway) because it would for me be more balanced....but we don't really have any "real" candidate for this do we? :S

Other than "Scribe Girl" aka "Jasmin" there isn't another lady candidate in sight. :(
