Has it been confirmed the class distribution is 3/3/3 or are people just assuming?

Also, like others have said, I don't really feel that it's fair to say we've had enough Cullen. He was a very minor character in DA:O with a promotion in DA:2 but I still wouldn't consider him a major character in either game. We know very little about him other than his views on mages.

Cole also straddles the whole Mage/Rogue line.  We know he is a spirit and tends to use blades, but we also know that he was a blood mage, so by adding him he could act as a third to both the mage and rogue category.   Leaving us with more space for the warrior class.

Cole has blood magic abilities, but he isn't a mage, he doesn't cast spells.  He always fights melee with a dagger.  The blood magic stealth stuff he does comes from his spirit/demon nature.  The old survey also classified him as a rogue.

As a pretty shameless Varric fangirl- dwarf fangirl in general, really- I was REALLY excited to see him return, and would be perfectly happy if he is dubbed the new narrator of DA forever more (though I honestly think that Sandal is the only returning character we'll see on a very serious, relatable basis).  He actually cracks my top ten favorite video game characters of all time, bumping the only Bioware character on my list (Wrex) to 9, and edging out ryu hyabusa, but I understand why people want to see new comps.  I feel that way about Cullen.  I know I'll enjoy whoever Bioware tosses at as, but as it stands, I have no real desire to get to know Cullen any better at all.

The two I'd like to see as comps are Cole (though not as an Li) and another girly-mage.  Would be nice to have the same number of chicks as dudes for a change.

I don't have a problem with returning characters and it's pretty expected at this point that we wouldn't have an all new cast in sequels. Remember, we had 3 returning characters in DA2: Anders, Isabela and Merrill. Sure Isabela and Merrill didn't play big roles in DAO but they were returning characters all the same. The dynamic is actually similar: Varric, who we've seen a lot of like we had Anders, then Cassandra and, if he's there, Cullen. Both were NPCs that will now get some fleshing out just as Isabela and Merrill were.

Seems like there is precedent for the dynamic we see now.

That's a good point. I know in the back of my head that Isabela and Merrill were in DA:O, but their characters are so much more fleshed out in DA2 that I kind of forget that we've seen them before. Interesting.

People are just assuming.  Nothing has been confirmed, or even hinted at, in any way by the devs.

I'd say that Merril was not simply more fleshed out in DA2,she was a completely different person.

What do you mean?

And is that your Warden? She's really beautiful!

Man I kind of am not a fan of DA:O Cullen lol All that stuttering makes me roll my eyes. I guess I definitely prefer the more mature and hardened version.

But the fact that this is where he came from definitely adds depth to his character.

Yeah, definitely. I'm okay with the "new" version of Merrill though. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed having that sourpuss for a companion, lol!

No she's not mine .And yes she is a beauty .Of all the past DA-DA2 characters that I'd like to see return .Cullen's my second choice .(Sebastian being the first)

I believe that there was a reason that they brung him back in DA2 .

Ah, that must be assuming that DHMG is a LI, which I highly doubt.  And since we've got only one lady in any of the art that's a mage (and reminds me a bit of Morrigan,) I'd say the mage LIs are going to be Solas and Vivienne.

DHMG will be an LI, if he's a companion - I'm 99% sure.

Explain Cole that covers his story and being in 200 words or less and then I can see him coming in.

Just pointing out that they literally did this in the survey - the same survey that said Cole was a companion.

(And it only took 66 words)

  • A long time ago, a young man died a cruel death in a dark place. And now, somehow, there is Cole. Was he a spirit or a demon? Is he human now? Cole’s not sure it matters anymore. Hounded by memories that aren’t his, invisible in a world he can stalk like a shadow, the rogue must decide between joining the living or preying on them.

I don't understand the idea that they need to explain everything about Cole in the books to put him in the games. They never explain what every companion has done for their whole life up until the point we find them. We always just get a few relevant pieces of information. We find out new things about old companions from books and comics all the time. Cole just has to make sense in the context of what he's doing now. They don't need to abridge Asunder.

The survey doesn't entirely work because he changed at the end of Asunder, remember?  He certainly didn't seem "hounded by memories" by the end, he seemed to accept them.  The whole "stalking the world" bit really doesn't make sense with the rest of the character prior to the end, and even after that...really? Far as I can tell, he returned to the tower and hasn't left.

I wouldn't mind seeing him as a NPC, but not as a companion.  FYI: Not all the survey characters are companions, per Word of Gaider.  This isn't like one has to be excluded for the other though.  I just state that due to the history of the character and the fact that the average DA fan knows who he is,  if the Templar is Cullen, he's far more likely making it into the game over Cole.

I don't think you should use notoriety as a measurement of how likely they are to be companions, though. Fan popularity is very clearly not their priority when determining the party - and by convention, the overwhelming majority of party members are new characters who will need explanations and introductions.

(In this respect, if notoriety meant everything, you could say Cole has a massive advantage over Vivienne, Solas, Sera, the Warden, Iron Bull and DHMG)

If the developers have a storyline in mind for the character, they'll use them - and that bio clearly proves that there was a storyline for Cole, at some point. He even got a class allocation.

And we can't tell what Cole did after Asunder... because nothing in the universe has taken place after Asunder. How can you tell what he did?

Five seconds after killing or abducting Lord Lambert he could've disappeared entirely, only to show up in Inquisition.

The short story Gaider wrote on his blog about Cole made it seem like he was wandering, to me. We couldn't really know what his plans were at the end. If he didn't think he was "the ghost of the spire" anymore, it stands to reason he may not feel any connection to stay there. As for the memories, it seems he still has the memories of the boy and I can't imagine they wouldn't bother him, because they're definitely not pleasant, he's just aware now that he wasn't Cole.

I'm still not really convinced the one line about the survey being false is totally accurate, since they also denied the survey was real at first. I'm just going to wait and see what happens with that. It may be true that there were cuts and massive changes, but I also wouldn't be totally surprised if that's a bit of an exaggeration.

I think we need another mage and a rogue, a man and a woman, for balance 3/3/3 classes, 4f/5m.

I guess I'm going for Dorian as mage and an antivan woman as rogue, because Antivan rogues are cool.

Never mind, I'm not really sure who Dorian is anymore, so I'll go for dramatic hands moustache guy for mage. Idk who he is, but he's a winner.

I wouldn't take any short stories published in Gaider's blog as anything but fan fic. It's not game material or official material. In fact, going by their general secrecy, it's probably far away from anything related to the game content. It's just Gaider writing some stuff based on his feels of the moment for the character.

As for saying the survey is fake originally, that is because the devs do no know what marketing does really (Mike was pretty clear about this a few time on twitter, he has no control over marketing). The dev did not know where the survey came from and if there was false information it it would even look like a fake to them.

I'm definitely not saying it's undeniable proof of anything. We're working completely with speculation at this point, of course. That Gaider's opinion of what's going on with Cole somewhat reflects what the survey said doesn't seem like NOTHING, exactly, though. It's about as applicable as any other points we have about unconfirmed party members, which is admittedly not worth all that much.
