I can see them designing a companion and later realizing he doesn't work as a one and keeping him for "antagonist" duty only. It's not that much different than what happened to Jowan, who went from plot-device to possible party member and back to plot-device for DAO.

Jowan started as a plot device, not a companion.

Hmm. Yeah though IB being a villain instead of companion is unlikely, I do think it'd be pretty awesome if one of our unconfirmed companions was actually a villain. I like learning about the characters and game in advance, but I still love a good ol' surprise.

Or an already established companion ends up turning on us at the very end and revealing him or herself as the main antagonist. Solas, for instance.

like Kreia from KOTOR2?

Depending on your perspective, some people believe one of our companions already turned on us and became the main antagonist last time. lol

He totally did, and he got the sharp end of my knife in his backside as a result, bastard.

Hmm yeah.  :P

Oh well something even more villainous, I mean. Okay blowing up the Chantry... extreme. But could be MOAR EXTREME.

Well...Although what Anders did was extreme, it wasn't aimed at Hawke(even though deceiving someone into helping you means you're actually betraying his trust)  so,I don't consider it a betrayal exactly.

What I'd like to see,is  a character that actually betrays us in the meaning of manipulating us from the very start,in fact manipulating us was his goal/mission...But then that's probably me asking for more drama and fan tears...

Perhaps it's just me, but this reminds me of Bishop from NWN2.

I'd like to see something like that but it would have to be done well. You would really have to like the character and have no clue whatsoever beforehand so... Varric as the master villain :wizard:

.... I was joking but wouldn't it be AWESOME!!! :D  To learn he was manipulating Cassandra and everyone else with his stories the ENTIRE TIME!!!

LOL! And DA2 never happened because Varric had just made it all up.

Dangit now I'm just as curious about the villain(s) as I am about the companions.

Hahaha. The "Varric is evil, DA2 was a lie" concept is HILARIOUS in its own way, but I would worry for the franchise's future. I don't see it being well received by the masses. XD

Well, betrayal plots are  classic, no matter the setting etc...It's more about how you present it and under what circumstances.

Mmmm, Bishop.
If Bioware does that type of character, I hope we get to romance him this time...

I didn't say that was a bad thing.  ;)

Let me just say this about Bishop: Cool character, and the first CE character that wasn't just crazy.  He had a purpose and I respected it but he

I really think people are jumping the gun, assuming Iron Bull is a companion.  :P I thought I'd be less convinced he's an NPC a few days later, but I'm not. If there was a Dragon Age Inquisition companion lottery card, mine would read: Varric, Cassandra, Vivienne, Solas, Sera (Blonde Elf), Bearded Grey Warden, Cullen, Dorian (DHMG), Cole.

Two magazine previews said Iron Bull was a companion, just fyi.

And the survey even had a bio:

  • The Iron Bull is a long way from home, and prefers it that way. A slap in the face of typically humorless Qunari, he loves drinking, killing, and looting-not necessarily in that order. The head of a vicious mercenary company, he’s known for excellent pay and brutal punishment. It’s been a ten year party, but the Bull may find that old loyalties die hard.

I know!  ;) I didn't mean to sound defensive...Still a good betrayal plot never gets old so I wouldn't mind to see one either, although I'd prefer it if the possible "traitor",granted that approval is high enough, decides to side with us in the end...

Iron Bull was also confirmed as a companion in the German magazine Play3.

Unless all four magazines all got that bit of information wrong, which I find impossible to believe.

1. Don´t forget Sera. That makes 2 (or 3?) magazines.

2.  Correct but mabye the presentation was led by crazy Bioware employee who loves to confuse his audience.

But i think thats also impossible.

Yes, that's Iron Bull and Sera confirmed.

(The way they magazines described seeing her at the end in combat made me think she appeared on-screen with the name-bar "Sera" - so they're using her name as it was in the game, not just guessing based on the earlier survey.)

Doesn't Gamestar only call her an elven archer?

Yeah that sounds logical. I think most of the authors have no knowledge about the leak survey.

By the way i think that Iron Bull survey is 100% correct.

The survey leak made it to all major gaming websites. I remember seeing it on Eurogamer, to be ignorant of it you need to have lived under a rock in the last 2 years.

Thats correct. But mabye the GameStar Author miss her name.

Or i went on a different day to Bioware. Or he slept at this part. Or i have no idea.

But OXM and Play3 have her name in the article.

Fair enough. I'd rather have Dev confirmation, though. But it does look very likely that Iron Bull is indeed a companion.  ^_^ (Which, if we're going 3/3/3 is bad news for people who want Cullen as a party member. Unless Iron Bull is a rogue, which I think is very unlikely. In which case, Cole is out.)

I think he looks more like a warrior, really:
