The dwarf in the Fade concept posted by Elite might be an earlier version of Varric, since he has a crossbow.

You know, the fact that they are keeping things so heavily under wraps for the final character could point toward it either being Cole or an early antagonist to DA:I.  Or a darkspawn, even.  I suspect the theory that the devs are keeping it under wraps because the character is story-important (and likely late to be recruited) is correct.

Who would be so important or shocking to the story?

  • Cole.  If you haven't read Asunder, or kept up with the forums/fandom but DID know some stuff about Dragon Age (even what you learn in-game), he'd probably be pretty shocking.  I kind of hope for this especially since I want to know what became of him after Asunder, but the other two options might also be interesting...
  • Early-game antagonist.  That guy was a total jerk, right?  But you just learned he could be very helpful to your cause and it even turns out he may have been acting in what he thought were Thedas's best interests.  Or he might not have been guilty of what you thought after all.  Are you going to kill him or recruit him?
  • An antagonist from a previous game.  Darkspawn would be ideal.  Someone you would never dream of forming an allegiance with, but you have to if you are going to save Thedas.

I did think Cullen was far more likely, but now it could really be anyone.  I think Cullen will be an important NPC, and maybe the leader of the remaining Chantry-loyal templars post-Asunder.  I feel bad for the Cullen fans that it doesn't look like he'll be a companion, but maybe he will still be available for romance, and you can still encourage character growth for him.  He is not likely to be a companion because he's known, and it wouldn't be so big of a surprise that they'd have to hide it from everyone...

I still think Cole has probably been scrapped.  And so, I'd say it's going to either be an antagonist or a sentient darkspawn who rounds out our party.  If it's a darkspawn, I am going to guess that it will be a mage, which would mean Dramatic Hands is a warrior and our party would be skewed against rogues this time.  Only if they are doing 3/3/3 does Cole have a chance.  And even then, if there's an interesting antagonist we recruit later, that could be our rogue.

Who knows?  I certainly don't.

Part of me doesn't want to spoil the surprise for myself, but the rest of me remembers what happened when I preordered DA2 and ME3... and yet, I like experiencing games relatively unspoiled.  It's going to be very hard to avoid getting major plot details spoiled the closer this game gets to release...

I've wanted an Awakened Darkspawn as a companion since my first playthrough of Awakening. However, I don't think we're going to get one during Inquisition. Because of how the taint seems to work, there'd have to be a lot of hand-waving as to why the Inquisitor and company didn't contract the taint from a walking source of pestilence. I mean, given how companions in later Bioware games tend to be the best at something or imbued with something that makes them special, they could easily say it was a darkspawn that did not spread the taint for whatever reason.

If that's the case, I want an awakened shriek companion. How's that for a melee rogue idea?

B-but maybe they're keeping it under wraps because they know he's a polarizing character? If he is made a companion, incessant whining about "pandering to female fans" is nearly guaranteed, even if his inclusion makes perfect sense story-wise. I imagine the devs would like to avoid such annoyances as long as possible. Why not just come out and say he isn't if he's not? Just to string along a small group of Cullen fans?

I mean, when Morrigan was rumoured to be a possible companion, they were pretty quick to say she would be an important NPC and not a follower. Why not make a similar statement for Cullen, if such is the case and rumours are rampant? Why all the secrecy around his involvement?

Because admitting he's not in might make it obvious that another person is? Part of the great debate going on right now is about companions, it keeps the forums busy and the game hyped. We have ten known possible companions, including Cullen, and only nine slots available. Removing just one options means, unless there's another character we've yet to be introduced to, we basically know who our companions are.

That's how I look at it. Still, I'm hopeful for Cullen. No reason not to be, really, besides natural cynicism.  :D

We already have a Seeker. But I wouldn't mind a templar. 2 spots left. One more mage, and you can have your templar.

If I'm being honest, the companion I'd like to have the most is Evangeline.

Did we ever have 2 companions that have the same gender, race and class? (And Alistair and Loghain don't count, they're mutually exclusive)

So if we get the Grey Warden (male human warrior), why would we get Cullen?

Also Cassandra is kinda a female version of Cullen, at least on a superficial level.

Now I'm not opposed to Cullen being on the tean, I just don't see it happening.

Wynne and Morrigan

Seriously, I don't think they're looking THAT much into it, totally convinced it's gonna be a 3/3/3 class split, but more than that, nope.

I think it's incredibly unlikely that the last companion is someone completely random - David Gaider has said on multiple occasions that the cut off point for someone to be in Inquisition as a companion was relatively long ago. It's not something that they can change very quickly, and I think there comes a point where the party characters just have to be locked down.

The examples he used above about Maevaris would suggest that even before August 2012 (when she was first shown in a comic) it was too late to introduce new companions - and we heard about Sera/Iron Bull/Cole/Dorian in September 2012. I don't want to be too overconfident in predicting things, but the idea that party characters could be easily cut, swapped or replaced after this point is a bit hard to believe.

It seems counter-intuitive because that was nearly two years ago, but remember that they were originally aiming for a late 2013 release - and the companions would almost certainly need to be decided way before then. I don't think the extra time could even be used to change the party roster, given David's comments and the way their development works.

Cole was said to be a companion after August 2012, so at this point I'm fully expecting him to be the ninth party member.

I know it's been said (haven't seen source though) there is no raven in the game, however given the sheer number of concept art pieces that have one shown very prominently I think we should still keep it as a possibility that Morrigan's child will be a companion. Slight leap, but here goes:

More specifically I think Morrigan will play a prominent role in the inquisition and I think it's at least possible that her child will be a companion - perhaps that last mage or rogue we are looking for. The age at first glance would potentially be off, but given that she went somewhere beyond the Fade at the end of Witch Hunt and she said the child was safe, perhaps the beyond allowed the child time to grow up in preparation for "the precipice of change" (Flemeth's words but Morrigan seemed to know Flemeth was up to something). In other words, perhaps she hoped to have the child be a prominent part of change coming to the world and made sure this would be possible by keeping him/her safe on a different plane entirely.

Also I'm bored of the Cullen / Cole discussion and wanted to throw something weirder out there :)

But Morrigan's child is 10 years old and doesn't even exist in some playthroughs!Personally,I don't think the inquisitor would have time to look after a child with all these Veil tears and demons...

Sorry, what I meant by "time to grow up" was that this Beyond was different in terms of time parameters. Better point re: player choices though. I sorta forgot you could potentially have her never get pregs. Although given how subtle that family is, it wouldn't surprise me if she figured out an alternative...

Well,I kinda doubt it,mainly because I remember the devs stating the OGB is only the result of the dark ritual.Otherwise your warden or Alistair/Loghain wouldn't die after killing the archdemon.

Fair enough. I'm just hoping that ogb isn't like a one-line mention just in case people didn't do the dark ritual. It was basically her reason for being in DA:O and following the Warden, so I feel like it's more likely that they'll have some kind of alternative to ogb rather than explaining away its absence or just having a kid running around Sky Hold with no part to play.

But I'm also eternally optimistic re: bioware games.

Okay back to Cole and Cullen. Womp womp.
