Completely unfamiliar with the comics, so the tiny bit of info I have gleaned has been from BSN threads. So I am tossing out this possibility (though if someone wants to quickly debunk it, because they are much more learned in the comic stories, please do ):

Spelling rogue and Grey wrong still bothers me. And The Grey Warden has only been seen, in both concept art and gameplay footage, as a sword&shield warrior. Cullen, at this point, is much more likely to be a romanceable NPC. We only get 3 warriors and Cassandra, Grey(Bear) Warden and Iron Bull already fill those slots. The fact that BioWare could confirm that Cullen is a LI but not a companion pretty much cements it IMO.

Grey warden had a sword/shield in the game play footage, so I think it's fairly safe to say he isn't a rogue. He also had a sword/shield in his concept art from the survey.

This might be a silly thought, but has anyone considered that Cullen could be changed into a rogue for the purpose of balance?

 

Him being a major NPC sounds more likely, but a class change isn't that far out of the realm of possibility.

I don't really think they would change a character's class that carried over from two games just to be able to shoehorn him into the game. I just don't see rogue fitting Cullen at all.

As I said in another thread, I cannot picture Cole as a "leader," unless he's a leader of Fade-Torn spirits or something. I'm betting the leaders are from important factions or groups, like:

 

Merchants Guild - Varric

Circle of Magi - Vivienne

Templars - Cullen

Grey Wardens - *cough* Stroud*cough*

City Elves - Sera

Dalish Elves (or Apostates in general) - Solas

Tevinter Magisters - DHMG

Tal'Vashoth - Iron Bull

Seekers - Cassandra

 

(Note: This is going on the assumption DHMG is the final mage. I'm seriously doubting us getting another female character, although I'd love to be proven wrong, in this case, at least.)

 

I really don't think Blackbeard's a rogue, so he's probably another warrior. Cassandra's a warrior, and so is Cullen, so unless Iron Bull's a rogue, someone else is not what they appear to be. So, bowl of wax fruit, anyone?

Where did they say the characters would be "leaders", anyway? I only saw they said they would be the "best of the best". Cole probably killed Lambert, since he last was seen with Cole's blade to his neck and now he's "missing". That makes Cole seem pretty imposing, to me. 

 

This is the quote I'm talking about;

 

"In Inquisition, you are in charge. Your nine companions, classes evenly distributed across mage/warrior/rogue, will be the best of the best."

But being a templar is kinda integral to Cullen's history and identity. Why not just make a new rogue companion if they need balance?

We know that he's a LI, and we know that David Gaider doesn't like NPC romance, so by logic of deduction, Cullen could be the unconfirmed 8th spot. The question is, who would be the last spot? DHMG or another female?

The only thing that I struggle with for Cole is his role as an NPC (If he is one).  His story would have to be fleshed out and given purpose in the story line.  If he is an NPC, I don't think he would be a major player in the Inquisition (Like Cullen, Morrigan, and Leliana could be).  So that would limit him to a single arc or quest, like Feynriel.  I am not sure Gaider would want to do that with someone with as much story potential as Cole.   So, if Cole isn't a companion, I think Gaider might save him for another DA.

Doubt Cullen is a rogue. They wouldn't change his class just so they could shoe horn him into the game. Or at least, I hope they wouldn't because then they could have just made another rogue character.

 

The fact that they said he can be romanced but didn't confirm him as a companion at the same time makes me still think he ain't a companion.

My thought:  If Cullen is a companion, then more than likely someone else (Iron Bull, or the Warden, who also appears to originate as a chevalier based on some of his concept art) has been cut.  If he is not a companion, then we'll be seeing a tremendous amount of him at the main keep.

 

As others have said, no one's seen Iron Bull in gameplay footage or screenshots.  Gaming magazines have claimed he is a companion, however.

 

With the 3/3/3 split, I'm thinking Dramatic Hands and Cole are both in, and we are wrong about someone else because Cullen is also a likely companion.

 

And that said, Cole might not necessarily be in the party at all and someone like Iron Bull might be a rogue.  When you think about it, it makes sense for him to be a rogue with his mercenary background.  He just doesn't look much like a rogue to me--but, appearances can be deceiving.

 

I personally still want to see Cole in the party.  And Cullen as well, for the Cullen fans.  And Dramatic Hands because he seems fun. ... Ah well.  Not everyone can be pleased, and I should be used to disappointment by now.

The Arishok was a rogue only in the files to accommodate his 2 full-sized weapons. He was not a rogue in any other way.

Well this 3/3/3 split has completely ruined my speculation.

 

I'm stumped now.  And, I just realized that technically we've only had three companions officially confirmed, so it could be as much as long as September (since we pretty much know Solas, Sera, Iron Bull, and the Grey Warden are in) until we get confirmation on one of the last companions through Follower Fridays!

Yea, this is why I don't like non-companion romances. Never done one. And while I'm not a hardcore Cullen fan, I like his character and do look forward to his romance. 

 

So....I just started a 5th DA playthrough with mage Amell Warden and plan on that being my Cullen playthrough. Yay....

If Dramatic Hands and Cullen are both companions the ratio of men to women is seriously off. So I think Cullen is out and that our 9th companion is a female.

Also Cole is too OP to be a companion, the guy is practically invisible to everything around him! So unless they nerf his abilities Cole is too much of a gamebreaker.
