Besides, didn't David or Mike confirm that not all of the pictures from the leaked survey were companions?

I'm not sure it was ever confirmed by them.

That being said, two of the survey images were Inquisitors.

Two other images were of Cullen and Scribe Lady, who I think are NPC advisors rather than companions.

Actually that is what you said. The two thoughts make no sense otherwise.

I said he was confirmed. I did not say he was a confirmed companion. Semantics, maybe. But I didn't say Cullen was a confirmed companion ever. Kthxbai. I brought of the survey in regards to COLE'S companion status for third rogue, not Cullen's.

I'm actually glad that we don't know all the companions and we won't until launch.  My only concern with a female rogue is that she'll be a polar opposite to Sera: Super dark and broody with a tragic past that haunts her every step.   If anyone has played the Demon Hunter in Diablo 3, I mean like that.  Like it would break her face to crack a smile.

I don't want all my companions "happy go lucky" and always loving life, but I also want someone that handles their past better than some of the previous companions have.

I just had an epiphany. What if Briala is our unknown female rogue?

Honestly, I hope not.  I've heard a little about ME, but my only experience so far with NPC romance was Neverwinter Nights.  And I hated it when I tried it as a male character to romance Aribeth.  Shoot, I can't even remember the name of the LI for ladies in NWN.  I didn't even know he was a LI until very recently and I played that game a bunch.  I knew about Aribeth but not him.

If Cullen is a NPC LI (like some have speculated) I wont rant and rage, I'll just ignore the subplot.

While awesome. I don't see Celene letting us borrow her court mage to run around with Briala..

I won't spoil anything but she is an important character and the inquisitor would be a fool not to try and recruit her.

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't believe Cullen has been in anything that Scribe Girl also hasn't been in (table concept art + survey). Meanwhile, we have the Grey Warden in alpha gameplay videos and drinking with other party members in concept art...

I don't think Briala will be a companion. I think she'll probably be a faction leader that you can side with or against. Her role was too important to join the Inquisition instead, I think.

At this point I think it's the most likely outcome.

Cassandra, Iron Bull and the Grey Warden are all warriors, all pretty much confirmed as companions, and there's no room for another warrior.

Cullen was grouped with Scribe Lady in the survey art, which may mean they're both NPCs.

The War Room concept art (which is the only one to feature Cullen that we've seen) has also been confirmed to have characters who aren't companions. The three characters there who aren't companions or likely companions are Leliana, Cullen and Scribe Lady, and there's a persuasive theory that they are the Inquisition's spymaster, military commander and chief trader.

I'm not a huge Cullen fan, but I was curious about romancing in a future play through.  If he is a NPC, then I look forward to getting to know him better, but I'll ignore any flirt options.  <shrug>  To each their own.  ;)

I agree that this is the likely course.

My only issue is that if that is the case... we have not even seen a whisper of who our third rogue might be. Since we were told that some of the survey was inaccurate and if things are the way they appear... then... everything else BUT Cole has been right, hasn't it? Ipso facto... he is the thing that didn't make the cut.

This is how I see it too. I would dearly love to have Cullen as a companion, but I don't think it will happen. A romanceable NPC is good for me!

If the dark haired man with fabulous twirly moustache and goatee is the third mage, I really hope the third rogue is female (need a bit of balance).

I think what David Gaider said is just that things "have been cut or changed substantially" since the survey. I'm PRETTY sure that was his quote, not 100%. But I don't think he ever specifically said that a companion had been cut from it. He and other devs that post here also said that they aren't on page with marketing and didn't necessarily know what was going on with the survey, which is supposedly why they didn't even know it was real at first. I'd say their commentary was vague at best and I wouldn't necessarily take it to mean the companions were wrong. They could have meant their specializations had changed, or anything, by "or substantially changed". We know those profiles give specific weapon uses and they've made the system so that you can change weapon specialization within a class, for example.

There's no evidence for any other third rogue, though. I know one could exist (and they just haven't shown them yet), but I wouldn't be cutting characters from party lists until there's a viable alternative.

Cole at least had a statement from years ago saying he is a rogue. Until some other sort of evidence comes along, even a statement from eighteen months ago is more persuasive than nothing.

I don't necessarily trust that the survey is inaccurate - everything in it has been spot on so far, particularly if DHMG ends up being Dorian.

We need to really try to keep in mind that the devs have flat out stated that we won't know who all the companions are before the release of the game.  I'm loving the speculation and it's a lot of fun, yet few things are set in stone.  We shouldn't jump to any definite conclusions, other than the ones that have been confirmed via Word of God.

Dev or "official" confirmation is very different to confirming things from evidence, though :P

For instance, they haven't said a thing publicly about the Grey Warden, Sera or DHMG - but all of those are almost certainly companions.

David has said a few times that their companion reveals are not aimed at fans who "have spoiled themselves silly" (his words), so it's quite possible that we'll never hear about some characters before launch - even when it's clear that they are members of the party.

I will actually be kind of disappointed if we don't hear about the characters before release, to be honest. I like knowing that sort of thing before going through with the purchase. I'd have to be pretty amazingly impressed with the information we do get to pre-order without know the companions. I mean, I don't need to know NOW, or next month, but I don't really want to buy the game not knowing.

Me, I've always assumed that if any of the companions weren't going to be announced, then those companions wouldn't be included in the nine that we know we're going to have. Seems to me that if you want there to be a secret companion, they need to actually be secret.

That being said, seeing as how the right hand(the devs) doesn't know what the left hand(marketing) is doing, who knows.

I've seen DG say once that if it was up to him, none of the companions or romances would be revealed before release because he wants us to enjoy the surprise of discovering them ourselves. Personally, I found that to be a bit presumptuous, assuming that we'd even buy the game without having a reason to.

I could totally understand not announcing a companion like Loghain that would compromise the plot to know about early. I want to know the majority of the companions, though, and I don't see any reason to hide them if there's not a plot related reason. The whole reason that I buy the games is for the characterization, so of course that's what I want to know about going in. To me, the "surprise" is in seeing their arcs play out and how they effect the plot in the long haul. I'm not going to buy a game that's a complete mystery. I need to have a reason.

This says Iron Bull is in and he's a warrior, for sure;

Basically, we're down to either Cullen or Grey Warden to be out as a companion.

This is it for me too. In fact, after hearing that it was possible to miss companions in DA2, and my brother missed both Leliana and Sten in DAO, I really don't like the idea of missing out on a companion on your first playthrough due to simple bad luck. At least if we know who they are, we can keep an eye out, but if not then we might not know until it's too late. Secret characters are another thing though, I like those.

Accidentally missing a character isn't a great incentive towards extra playthroughs either.
