I'm rooting for Cullen and Cole. But I think they won't be companions, don't know why, just a gut feeling.

David has done some funny Tumblr posts on what Cole would be like as a companion in the past.

(And a kind of cryptic short story that seems to be set after Asunder.)

Reading the Cassandra one never gets old.

I'm just hoping that at least one of the remaining two is a complete surprise.  I mean, I love all the speculation, but it's still fun to have something come totally out of left field, not yet shown in any of the art, not in the leaked survey, nothing.

I'm hoping for another rogue and another mage too.  I'll be surprised if Cullen is a companion...in-game, sure, but not a companion.  It's funny, I thought I was all about him being one for quite awhile, but at this point I think I'd rather meet someone new.

My guess is that maybe Feathers - Warden - Beard guy will be eventually confirmed. Then the other two will be a mage and a rogue for us to discover while playing, with Cole being a possibility.

Someone speculated that Lelianna, Cullen, and Scribe girl will, not as companions, be helping us run the Inquisition, with their specialties in spy intelligence, military strength, and trade, respectively. I think that sounds plausible.

I have this vague memory of the devs saying that they won't show all the companions before the launch...is it just me or...? :S

I'm really hoping Cullen is a companion. I would like to see what he's like after the events in Kirkwall

The one linked in my reply. Someone made a fanart of Cassandra reading a book with Cole showing up, than Gaider created a banter between Cassandra, Varric and Cole base on it (sort of).

It's just funny and I laugh each time I read it.

So, confirmed companions' autorships: David Gaider (Cassandra), Mary Kirby (Vivienne, Varrric), Lukas Kristjanson (Sera), Patrick Weekes (Iron Bull), ¿? (Solas).

Also, the DA Wiki says that Jennifer Hepler wrote a LI/companion for Inquisition before her flight, although i cannot find the original source.

I thought she was writing Cullen before she left. Didn't she write him for DA2?

I remember that, too. So some companions will remain a surprise. Makes you wonder who "Surprise Meatballs" is from the food comparison.

She wrote alot of characters; Anders, Bethany ,Gamlen, Leandra, Elthina, Cullen, and Sebastian. In DA2 that is...so it may not be Cullen she wrote :P ;) ( sorry for breaking some ones bubble lol)

Yes, that's why David Gaider was a bit shocked ( and me too ) that some people wished he could become an LI.

At the time of Asunder he was childlike, I find it hard to believe the character to be incapable of growing between book and game or during the course of the game.

Anyway, I think Cole will be a DLC companion.

From what i understood from the OXM article, there won't be any DLC companions, at all...may be wrong though ;), and from what i gather aren't Cole a homicidal, psychosocial demon with a child mind?...(please correct me on this so i may know why people like him so much :) )

That's true, but out of the characters that you mentioned, only Cullen was in the leaked survey and in the war room concept art. ;)

Yep.

The reason they gave was that companions needed to be integrated early on (since the devs have to plan out all the places where a companion can be relevant and useful in the story, in banter, in quests, etc) so any DLC companion would inevitably be partially "on the disc" at launch. To avoid all the (wildly hysterical) brouhaha over cut content and "Day One DLC", they've decided to scrap that idea entirely.

In a way I think that's actually a good thing, because the DLC companions have never really had as much "oomph" to them, probably precisely because only a fraction of players will ever have access to them. Zaeed and Kasumi were good in ME2 and I enjoyed Sebastian (and *especially* Shale) but it's hard to shake the feeling that they weren't as well integrated into the story as the core characters.

I guess at least this way, we know that all 9 characters will be deeply tied to the storyline.

Gah, I would love to go back to Sandal being on the proverbial table, rather than Cole.

I read Asunder, and frankly, I don't get the appeal of Cole. I have to wonder how a (psychotic/deranged/skittish/childish/yadayadayada) Fade spirit who can barely wield a dagger would make a good companion.

And loyalty? I'd seriously question it. In fact, if Cole was a follower, I could see him pulling a Yurt the Silent Chief (ala Demon's Souls), and killing off the other followers and NPCs, one by one.

At least with Sandal, he can do his "boom!" thing, while melting your heart with his big goofy grin, and a butt scratch.

But really, I'm rooting for Cullen, and hopefully another mage.

I think he's an intriguing character, and at this point we aren't actually sure what Cole is. His bio in the survey set up his arc as Cole having to decide between joining humanity or preying on us, which I think is a side of the spirit/demon lore that hasn't really been explored yet. There's also something poetic about suffering a lack of connection to people (he's invisible and everyone forgets him) and trying desperately to overcome that which I think has real potential for great storytelling.

A long time ago, a young man died a cruel death in a dark place. And now, somehow, there is Cole. Was he a spirit or a demon? Is he human now? Cole’s not sure it matters anymore. Hounded by memories that aren’t his, invisible in a world he can stalk like a shadow, the rogue must decide between joining the living or preying on them.

Cole is a rather childish/immature psychopath/murderer.

So was Zevran

So was Fenris.

It is tradition for the M/M relationships at this point.

Between Cole/Zevran/Fenris Cole seems the most capable of growing/getting better honestly, and he appeals to people with caretaker personality types (like myself).

It's funny you mentioned everyone but Javik, because I thought he was the best in this regard. (Well, every regard, but that's just delving into my tastes.) I mean, the counterpoint is that Javik is so well-integrated that the game feels wrong without him, and that's its own degree of brouhaha, but man. His stuff is good.

I'm okay with this.

^ Response to the 6 Males 3 females as companions.....

I just doubt they would do this. (the DA games aren't that unblanaced in terms of classes and sex)

Can you just imagine the striaght male outcry about only having three potential LIs? (and for some reason I don't think Viv is going to be a LI)

3 character slots to fill.

I'm calling 1 female (race open, class I'm thinking rogue for some reason), and two human males (a warrior and a mage)
