Awakening bug - any way around this?

I go to Kal hirol last and then cannot have sigrund officially join because I have to head to amaranthine. Is there a patch for this or any way around it? I don't think it mattered last time as long she survived, but I'm not sure.

If Sigrun is recruited as the very last companion, you will not be able to talk to Varel about having Sigrun becoming a Grey Warden because he is busy.  A workaround for this is to recruit Sigrun, proceed through the ruins of KalHirol until the end of the Trade Quarter, take the exit as opposed to the stairs to the lower levels, return to Virgil's Keep and have Sigrun undergo the Joining, before returning to finish KalHirol's Lower Reaches.  You will still get the Sigrun's Joining Quest message upon completing Knotwood Hills but the quest completion and the codex entry will remain.

This also happens with Velanna if the Silverite Mines are done last. A workaround is to keep the Blackmarsh questline for the last. Also, as Jeffon mentioned, returning to the keep before completing Kal-Hirol or entering the silverite mines is another option. If you are on the PC, there are fixes like the Joining Ritual Fix in Nexus which might work for you. I haven't used it myself though.

Short answer is that there are no patches, official or otherwise. If you want a run that avoids bugs you're practically required to read fan-made FAQs on what order to do things, what events to avoid, etc.

Sadly, this happen to me as well when i first played it. You have to do Silverite Mine and Kal hirol before picking up Justice in the Blackmarch. The other gotcha is Sigrun's personal quest. You can't do it if you started the Law and Order quest.

I managed to discover the workaround for this bug completely by accident. I keep my inventory too full and don't want to miss any loot.

 

Edit: I get that this is a low magic setting and that teleportation is believed to be impossible, but damn it there's only 125 inventory slots. Would it have killed Gaider to give mages a Town Portal spell?

Can I clear part of the main hall then go back to the keep? I'd rather not get much futher to avoid needless backtraking. I kind of don't care too much if she joins. I guess I'll have to save blackmarsh for last. I go sooner because I like triggering the dialogue at the start with Nathaniel to cap bring him higher for approval but I guess I could just trigger the dialogue then leave. I think I can because I'm not really into anything at that point.

Saving Blackmarsh for last is the only way to avoid the bug without using another bug (or so I assume, since Joining Velanna or Sigrun before they should want to join can't possibly have been intended) since Justice already has a Joined body.

You can return to the keep the very moment you get access to them as teammates, that is without even entering Kal-Hirol and The Silverite Mines.
