Is there some trick to get the random encounter to work? I have played through Awakening many times and have only gotten it once. And that was a playthrough I did not take seriously, I tried to make that Warden as stupid as possible.

I really think your best shot is right after you finish the Silverite Mine. Save just before you leave, head back to the Wending Wood, and it should trigger. if not, try again. I have had it trigger after that point, but it was just dumb luck.

I found that after talking with her, after she has done the joining, in a nice way while at the same time giving her a couple gifts and going back to the Wending Woods, the encounter happens.
