Gah. I need answers lol

I think eluvians are portals, primarily, both within Thedas and trans-dimensionally. Morrigan did something to hers to make it bypass the Fade to another world.

Spoiler

Concerning your spoiler, that would mean that the Dalish potentially have a huge advantage over other nations like Orlais.

You keep saying that like it means if she finishes the eluvian it'll be perfectly safe. (And she never does manage to get it working so we don't know if it was safe or not).

I've already said that once we know how to activate it it should be activated outside the city.

But until we've got a fully functional one and is being used, we can only speculate. We can say it leads to the black city, but there is no evidence to support this, and is merely speculation on Tamlen seeing an underground city. We can say it draws darkspawn because there were darkspawn in the cave, or we can say that the darkspawn simply came across the cave because it was a blight, and since they corrupt everything they touch simply by being there, that may be the root cause of the taint and the elves getting sick.

I see the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks, whereas it seems you do not, but that's alright in the end. Ultimately, if I have a choice, as Inquisitor I'll support studying the eluvians and seeing what that brings.

She flat out says she can't move it. (Or maybe it was in one of my debates with Xili where I realized she can't move it). Edit: Wait no that's while she was building it.

Basically why move that heavy thing all the way out to the wounded coast when she could've built it out there in the first place.

Also why can't she build it out of the city then? Who's going to steal an old decrypt mirror (that doesn't show a reflection)? She could probably place a blood barrier around it and solve the issue of theft that way. And if the worst should come to pass (it self activates, an accident happens) It won't be in a crowded city. Why MUST she put herself first and build it in the middle of an alienage? For her convenience? If she's so concerned about her people she can deal with a bit of inconvenience.

As for potential benefits that's fair. I'd find it beneficial too if she would build it somewhere there wasn't a crowd of easy made victims. As there is not my Hawke does everything he can to block her from building the mirror.

And since the taint ISN'T unleashed on Kirkwall, it's proof that she succeeded in cleansing it. She has it in the city for seven years after all.

No it isn't considering she can't make it work, a nuclear reactor isn't any less dangerous just because it's shut off.

Well, it does look heavy. Still, the fact that she has a shard that was once tainted by darkspawn in the city for seven years, and no one, not even her, gets tainted is proof positive that she knows what she's doing, at least in regards to using blood magic to cleanse the taint.

And what evidence do you have that she is building a nuke? You have no clue what potential eluvians have, while I see the Tevinters taking them, getting fancy phones, and nothing bad happening as a result.

Until she turns it on in a crowded area and it leads to Blight Central you mean?

You have no evidence that will happen. Morrigan wasn't tainted by her fully functional eluvian.

Read my edit. My memory's a bit shoddy on that point sorry XD. But either way there's no reason she HAS to build it in a city other than her personal convenience. And I'm sorry but putting your convenience over other people's safety is something I don't care about. She can hike herself up tot he wounded coast and build it.

Well, she's left her clan so she's far away from the demon influencing her thoughts (and the short story makes it clear that he's stronger the closer you get to him,) and is in a place where being an elf is a very bad thing because she is seen as less than human and must live in an alienage.

Where can she, as an elf (the people who, whenever they leave an alienage to set up shop tend to have their homes and businesses burned down by racist humans who can't stand to see elves living among them according to the City Elf Codex) set up a workshop to work on it?

Morrigan is also a far better trained, wiser and more powerful mage who was taught and raised by someone pretty close to immortal. They're not even in the same ballpark. (I'm not saying the Eluvian is always going to be tainted. But Hawke being alarmed Merrill's building something that has shown itself to be dangerous (even if she's cleansed it) under the teachings of demon in the middle of a city is not something strange or out of bounds.

While this debate is getting good, I'm also getting pretty tired. It's 11:40 P.M. where I live.

Continue this later?

Fair enough on the short stories. But clearly she doesn't know how to fix the mirror on her own. Thus why she's going to him in the first place.

The wounded coast near where her clan isn't even supposed to be? I would want her outside of the city. Hawke goes past plenty of isolated places that could be used to build the mirror. There is no necessity in Merrill building the Eluvian in the middle of Kirkwall.

Technically, Merrill is building it based off the lore she gathered, and the information that she extrapolated from the shard.

Remember the Dalish Warden and Tamlen becoming tainted, the Darkspawn seeking it out and a Grey Warden flat-out saying to you it's too dangerous to exist? And I see the Alienage being infested with the Taint and innocents suffering as a result of a foolish girl meddling in things that are best left alone both are likely scenarios given what we've seen and know about eluvians.

Eh doesn't she admit she asked Audacity for help? And the 3rd act convo has her asking him for help again.

And you have no evidence it won't and Morrigan had access to an ancient spellbook written by arguably the most powerful witch in Thedas' history and knew how it worked Merrill has at best a pride demon's dubious knowledge and doesn't.

With blood magic, that's correct. With the construction of the Eluvian, Gaider said:

She just has the one shard. She incorporates it into the mirror she builds, extrapolating its construction both from the shard itself and what lore she's been able to collect. Probably why she wasn't able to get it to work.

Nah meant in your imagination. ;) But if you can show me where that happens onscreen I'd be glad to see it so I can pick those choices <3

@Lob: oooooh. So she only asks him for help twice?
