Yup she's totally Hawke's weak willed slave here.   <_<

You know that reminds me of the stupidity of the "I'll save my people with this mirror" even if it's a transportation system or a communication system how exactly is it saving anyone? Unless there's a magic weapon of +22 that kills everyone that nears it on sight that's not going to help her people regain their lands for the humans.

Will it help her people? Sure I can see plenty of ways of helping. But saving them from their desolate state....eh...not exactly.

See I'll acknowledge it can have benefits I just believe the risks outweigh them.

Same. But the risks would've been (mostly) gone for me if she had done it outside the alienage. My Hawke believes she can defend herself from a demon. She isn't that foolish as she says to Anders. it's the whole leaving it in the middle of the alienage (a place where most of them aren't even allowed to have weapons I believe so if crap spews out they're completely and utterly defenseless) that makes my Hawke go "no".

It's revolutionary technology that can be beneficial in a number of ways, and it's just one step towards an attempted revitalization of the Elvhen. You clearly disagree about it, but I respect Merrill being proactive about the plight of the People.

One step =/= saving. Phones are a great technology and so are planes. But those two techs alone could not revive a dying civilization.

And yeah my Hawke respects her trying to save her family and people too. He'd do the same...just not in a crowded city.

This all of this though my Hawke also questions her judgement because she's willing to trust demons.

Trusting demons is probably the last thing I'd do. Even if they're being straight with you, chances are they're just waiting for the chance to wreck crap up later on for someone else.

All that trouble expressing themselves in positive ways and what not.

That's not quite accurate. Merrill cautions you can gather intel from spirits (which is precisely what Hawke can do with the Profane Abomination and Torpor), but she's also stressing that all spirits are dangerous. She even admonishes Anders for thinking there was such a thing as a good spirit.

Merrill asks for Audacity's help twice in the course of six-seven years. The first time, because she needed a way to cleanse the corruption from the shard of the eluvian. You know, precisely to prevent the spread of the Blight? Which worked just fine if the fact that it's been in the Alienage for six years and nobody in it's gotten the taint yet. And the second time, because she has tried every possible method and it was literally the last option left. And she not only considers the possibility of her becoming possessed, she outright brings someone to stop and kill her if that happens. She also makes it clear she does not fully trust Audacity and that she only outright believes him on very, very specific information that is relevant to her purposes. Sounds to me like someone who knows exactly what she's doing and who deliberately puts herself in a position where the person most at risk is herself and who does everything she possibly can to prevent her actions from hurting others.

Key word is "can". If they can get the damn things working again, as well as make sure it's safe to travel through, without transmitting the Blight.

Either way, Eluvians are a major gamble.

She gains approval from agreeing to help Torpor without question that's blindly trusting a demon.

A nuclear generator is useful to folks as well, doesn't mean you should try and consult shady black market terrorist in how to build one and trust they aren't trying to manipulate you somehow.

I was just talking about the Dalish use in general, not specificially Merrill. I respect what she was trying to do, but we are dealing with an extremely powerful magical artifact from another age. There has to be some strings attached to make these things work. Power like unlimited teleportation, both within Thedas and cross-dimensionally, doesn't come for free.

Save for not building it in the middle of a crowded city.

Demons have their uses (though my Hawkes and Wardens are more of Morrigan's KILL IT KILL IT NAOW!) attitude which generally speaking is the wisest course of action. And Merrill did have enough foresight to ask Hawke to come with in case the worst happened.

It's supposed to be for gaining information instead of attacking immediately, just like it is with the Profane Abomination.

When she builds a potentially dangerous artifact in the middle of a crowded area full of civilians clearly she's the most at risk.

Where are you getting this should be from? Did the devs mention this?

Also, Merrill making a deal with Audacity isn't a flight of fancy or fanfiction. Merrill made a deal with Audacity to learn how to use her blood magic. The lore states that blood magic is so rare in Thedas that most mages learn it from making deals with demons. Now, granted, there could have been books around she could've learned from, but she says it told her how to cleanse the mirror with blood magic. It told her how to use blood magic.

Also, Audacity knew that she would ultimately fail with the mirror and knew that she would PROBABLY come seek its counsel when she exhausted all other sources. That is probably when the demon would start in on its, "Oh... well... If I was freeeee I could help you." It was basically playing the part of mystical drug dealer, "Don't worry, Merrill, the first one is free..." Marethari knew this better than Merrill did.

Anyways. Just because it is a point of characterization you don't like, doesn't mean you can ignore that she flat out tells you she dealt with Audacity to learn how to cleanse the mirror.

I agree that Merrill's choice was risky, although I also deeply sympathize with her want to preserve the Eluvian.

I feel like what Marethari did was at least equally risky, though. She thought Merrill would let out the demon unwittingly, so.. she let out the demon? If she believed Merrill and Hawke could defeat the demon, why didn't she just warn them and maybe even ask to assist when Merrill activate the Eluvian? It seems a lot more effective and less risky than just letting it out on the assumption that Merrill and Hawke would make it to her before she devoured her whole clan and made it to the city.

That is sadly true. The drug comparison makes sense, since dialogues and codex entries point out that no matter how in control you think you are, the demons will always try to deceive the mages to get more than they give.

So, after the past, what, 20 or so pages, we've finally come to the conclusion that Merrill is in fact, not a moderate character because she spends most of her time working on the Eluvian?

So, how about all those moderate characters?

Circle Bethany?  I don't remember enough of that play through to recall how she felt by the end other than relieved she was with Hawke and horror that Orsino was such a butt munch.

I actually Morrigan to be a bit of a moderate. Wants the freedom, but doesn't want to burn Towers down around the Templar's ears to get it. Yes/no?
