So, I decided to give it another try... It was a bad idea. The story is so badly composed, I cannot even retell my dissatisfaction. So, I installed the game and finished introductory part - right up to arrival on the Citadel.

Details form a good story IMO. It is important to see not only big picture, but also to be able to come closer and look at each separate stroke. Now...

1) The beginning. Shepard is summoned to report concerning reapers for a special comission. Why? They did not interrogate Shepard before? The were not informed on Reapers capabilities? They just called a single guy to ask him/her "OMG, what to do now?!" It's ridiculous.

2) Anderson throws a badge to Shepard. It's Shepard's badge? If so, why did Anderson keep it? If it is Anderson's badge, it's kinda pointless act. I dunno, maybe for Americans it would be symbolic or something, but it's obviously dumb.

3) You cannot hold a grudge for Ashley. You like her whether you want it or not. In my case she'd stay on the Normandy and then she'd be dropped off immediately after arrival on the Citadel.

4) One of the most important decisions of ME1 - who is to present Earth in the Council - is neglected. It's Undina. Why did I pick Anderson then?

5) Considering power of Reaper's weapons shown in the opening, the Earth should be completely devastated and inhabitable when you get to the Citadel.

6) Martian storms... I was unable to understand if the storm has ended when you confront Cerberus spy, but if it is so (considering both shuttle and Normandy were able to hear you), then you spent looots of time in that complex, for those storms can last for years.

7) Why would Reapers need the Citadell at all, if they can arrive the the galaxy so fast? And why the Citadel was not the first object to be attacked after their arrival? (And please, don't tell me they were unable to get their undetected - they are everywhere, which is clearly obvious by their attacks after your scanning)

8) (from previous run) Why WMD used on Garrus' homeworld was not used on Earth?

9) I thought prothean data is barely understandable by modern civilizations. Though it seems their constructive documentation was using ISO standards.

10) I saw at least 12 ways of climbing up to the second floor of the room you meet Liara. You have only one though.

11) All Cerberus troopers you meet seem to be male. Femshep, though, is female. Also, how did Shepard guess squad identification of the guys they kicked out near train controls?

12) Why did Hacket call Liara Liara? Do they know each other that well? I'd expect from him something like "doctor T'Soni".

13) Cruisers and Drednoughts cannot enter atmosphere. Yet one ship, claimed as dreadnought, blows up hanging barely in a couple of kilometers over the city.

14) Why her explosion was so weak? If she was hit into reactor, we'd see a thermonuclear explosion (good bye, city!), if not, she'd just fall on the ground.

15) Normandy SR-2 was also marked as a ship unable to land on planets. Though we see her doing that on several occasions. Considering earth's mass and atmospheric conditions, it should definitely be one of those planets you cannot land on - or there are really not that many habitable planets you actually can't.

16) If Shepard was unaware of Archive's position, Cerberus was. So why did it take so much time for them to even start downloading data? They were widely spread through all the complex for some reason instead of getting a foothold near Archive, getting data, and getting away.

17) Of course there was an N7 armor set on the Normandy, perfectly fitting Shepard.

18) Why did that terminatrix have metal hair around her head? And how did actual hair fit there then?

19) Where from did bruises on Ashley's face come from? Her helmet remained intact, thus her face was protected. She should have her neck broken though.

20) Why was terminatrix at full health when you start shooting at her? Ashley hit her four times, she should be at about 50-60% HP.

21) Where did Shepard get shields during initial part of the game? He always carries a shield generator around?

22) Why does not completing The Arrival have zero effect on the beginning? MAybe I should be at least informed on what happened there? When I left off Shepard kinda saved everyone AGAIN and did not allow dangerous terrorists to get their hands on valuable technology.

23) Why Joker was still piloting Normandy once again? He joined Cerberus long before Shepard did!

I have no idea what the hell is wrong with you people: you hate a game. and then you play it again and then you whine you don't like it?

... what?

Anderson throws Shepard's dogtags to her/him. Are they the same set that Liara had if you played the broker dlc? Don't know.

And what do Americans have to do with someone keeping dogtags in their pocket?

I see a lot of people on these boards painting Americans with the same brush these days, and I don't like it.

What I don't understand is how you even got interested in Mass Effect in the first place if this is the degree of nitpicking you're willing to do. Go back through ME1 and try to apply the same standards: you'll get the whole series ruined for you.

Some of your complaints are justified, others are ridiculous: this isn't a platformer, so why would you be able to climb to the second floor in 12 places in Mars?

You don't even know what dogtags are. Then you imply it's only Americans will get it and for everyone else its dumb.

I can't even.

Ok, let's try to clear at least some of this up.....

7) Why the Reapers go after the Citadel is explained during the attack on Chronos station.  Regarding the Citadel being their first objective - it would be during a "normal" cycle.  Revisit what we learned in ME1 (Protheans took action to prevent the Reapers from jumping straight to the Citadel).  And they can't arrive "quickly" in our galaxy, otherwise they would have been there in force at the end of ME2 (iow, once they get to the first relay at the edge of the galaxy, they can get anywhere in the galaxy in seconds)

14) Methinks you might want to read up on how traditional reactor power plants work - when they get damaged, they don't go up in a massive mushroom cloud.

22) Possible legit point - I have never done a trilogy run without the Arrival DLC installed, so I don't know how the original game explains Shepard not stopping the indoctrinated forces seen in this DLC from welcoming the arrival of the Reapers.

23) Again, this was explained pretty clearly in the game itself, if you took the time to talk to Joker and EDI.

Like psychevore said, I don't really understand why people who admittedly dislike a game complain when they replay that game and don't suddenly and magically start enjoying it.

OK, let me explain.

1) I DO love sci-fi. I really do love sci-fi a lot. ME1 for me was a divine blessing: finally, a good space opera RPG! Yeah, there are some strange moments, but hey! It's awesome! Then ME2 came out, and it was a bit worse due to more incomprehensible things, but hey! It's still awesome! But then comes ME3. And it simply killed me. I was unable to play it: literally everything was wrong, illogical, strange. It was like Michael Bay suddenly took over BioWare! Cool shots! EPICNESS!!! More epicness!!! Screw logic! That's why I never finished ME3. But now I decided: why not, maybe I overreacted, maybe I missed some point, moybe I lost artistic thought, making this all work... Nope.

2)

Again, this was explained pretty clearly in the game itself, if you took the time to talk to Joker and EDI.

From my previous playthrough I remember there was some explanation, but it still is incomprehensible. In real life Joker would definitely be spending his time in jail, and EDI would be disassembled, isolated and researched.

3)

Methinks you might want to read up on how traditional reactor power plants work - when they get damaged, they don't go up in a massive mushroom cloud.

As far as I got it, in ME universe reactor is a little continuous thermonuclear reaction, caught in a web of mass effect fields. Direct hit would disrupt those fields and create a small supernova. But I could get it wrong, I admit.

4)

As far as I got it, it's US army style military badge (every soldier has one), or I'm wrong? Any way, my problem is - why would Anderson carry around Shepards badge? He obviously was not going to return Shepard back to sevice before Reapers suddenly attacked. So there is no reason to take that badge. If it was NOT Shepard's badge, then this action of badgethrowing is entirely pointless and has symbolic meaning only fro those people, whose armies in fact use this badge system.

Nostalgia glasses. ME1 is written with about the same amount of coherence and logic as ME3 (pre-ending).

I agree on all things and then some. I simply stopped playing ME3 once I found it impossible to make some sense out of it. That is, after the first playthrough.

Anyway, taking away Shepard's dogtags is both symbolic and literal. Shepard had his authority taken away for the trial, now Anderson is reinstating his authority so that he can go act in an official capacity for Earth with the Normandy and its crew.

I don't enjoy talking about ME1's faults since I like it. It's something of a side effect of this board that you see so many complaints about all the games in the trilogy that you end up liking everything less.

That is obvious. Problem is: where did he get Shepard's dogtags? They are supposed to be individual. It's highly doubtable for Shepard to be returned into active service that same day, so there were no reasons for Anderson to bring Shepards dogtags with him. So either he actually was carrying them around for no reason, or he actually was going to ask Shepard to return to service that same day anyway (which is unlikely).

Oh, so you're issue is why is he physically carrying them at the moment the Reapers attack? If you need an in-game reason, Anderson believed Shepard all along about the Reapers, and a meeting had just been called and Shepard summoned to deal with what was apparently their arrival. It's logical for Anderson to assume and/or try to force the issue that Shepard will/should be reinstated.

To be honest given the level of nitpicking that goes on around here I think this is an overly harsh response to the op.
I read his points with interest as it is always good to get another point of view.

More importantly op, what do you think tali smells of?
