They could angle the shot in whichever direction they wanted, that's the advantage animation has over irl cinematography. The creator is literally in control of the entire world, from the environment and lightning to the exact pixel spot the camera is facing. It wouldn't have been hard to have angled the "camera" and altered some of the environment to get the perfect shot to show her in a shower without showing her breasts or crotch, if that was their prerogative.

You can even see them do this in a way, using a clothed shepard to help in obscuring a lot of the shots while they show things like below the waist, abdominal only shots, neck up shots, and so on. The problem is though, they were sloppy in doing so, potentially out of laziness, and so only did a so-and-so job on it for the sake of trying to be cheeky and make you think you're getting girl on girl action before fading to black. Shepard taking off her clothes and traynor giving her the go ahead type look, before fading to black, would have probably done just fine in conveying the same message without the awkwardness of having a half censored traynor and a fully censored Shepard getting their perfectly fine clothes all soaked.

Trying to have it be both tasteful and highly sexualized resulted in nobody getting what they wanted out of the scene.

For the shower scene, it starts with Trayner in her underwear when the shower starts, and then you only ever see Trayner's underwear again because a strap shows up briefly on her shoulder at one point when her and Shepard start making out. So sure, with the existing camera shots the Devs could have swapped out her body model for a female nude (if they even have it) during the shower make-out scene, and Trayner would still be PG-13 obscured. The only reason we'd be able to tell she was naked is that her shoulder wouldn't show up at one point with a bra strap on it. But they didn't, and to me, so what? Bra strap on shoulder.

The part of this conversation I'm having a problem with is the "inconceivable" and "awkward" part. I can absolutely see someone as uptight as Trayner using an open shower in her superior's private quarters in her underwear before her and Commander Shepard are actually lovers. I can absolutely see someone making a romantic gesture like walking into a shower fully clothed in an I-can't-wait-to-get-my-hands-on-you romantic/lustful gesture, and having the clothes come off later.

Since I'm one of few diehard fan of Samantha, the shower scene could've been done better without a doubt. I'm not gonna worry about since it won't change anything. Aside from that scene, she's a great character

Wait! Is 'Bob' the same 'David' Who refused to believe that anyone could have Jacob as their own person canon love interest, in 2 and 3, despite me pointing out that he filled that purpose in my game?

I love people like him. They provide no end of amusement to me as they flounder to try and fit contrary facts into their own narrow view.

The underwear love scenes in Mass Effect didn't spoil them for me, even if I did find it odd. They were brilliant compared to what we got in Dragon Age: Origins.

Edit: themikefest. I think Traynor is a great character and her romance is one of the best.

It was nice to see someone with afflictions I could actually relate to. When she started talking about her asthma I rember thinking "finally someone with a real life disease"

Yes, everything about the romance scene with Traynor was perfect, except the daft undies in the shower. But that didn't detract too much as you say, a definite facepalm moment though. She's definitely a great character (love her in Citadel) In fact I liked all the 'new' ME3 characters a hell of a lot.

There's definitely a cultural differnece between the Old seat of Empire and across the pond, which is interesting. I had always thought there was but never realised how big a thing it actually is; I suppose given the furore over Janet Jackson at the Superbowl (which was viewed with a lot of bemusement over here) should have really been a good indication.

Mind you, I can go out and buy a newspaper and have a topless woman on the inside page, so it's not surprising that we are a little more relaxed over here at the sight of a naked person. I also have a lot of European family (Germans etc) and so being exposed to that culture probably makes a difference, but at the end of the day it is exceedingly odd to see how uncomfortable adults get about the thought of seeing nudity in a computer game.

Anyway, having started playing DA:O I nearly burst out laughing when I saw Morrigans outfit. Bioware still have a long way to go in some areas; I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that FemShep's armour at least doesn't have a cleavage window. That's progress (shame about Samara though eh).

When I lived in West Germany(before East and West united), you can see women topless at parks and when watching TV if the commercial was about shampoo the woman was topless in the shower using the product. I don't have an answer as to why here in the states people get all bent out of shape if you see a naked man or woman. I personally like to throw that word 'censorship' in the garbage, I mean its 2014 not 1950.

I like the oufit Morrigan has. A lot of times I would have her wear a different outfit that boost's her stats.

I think her default outfit does a pretty good job of boosting her stats as it is. She'll catch a cold.

When you do Morrigan's sidequest, there is a chest that has robes almost identical to what she currently wears that bolster her stats.

First time I played DAO I switched out Morrigan's outfit ASAP because I was afraid all the Templars would recognize her as a witch (even gave her a sword). Little did I realize that DAO is not that sophisticated. I usually leave her in her outfit for most of the game now.

It is reasonable to expect some form of realistic nudity when you play a mature rated title where the ESRB block mentions sexual themes and nudity. I've seen some people say that violence being acceptable is not an appropriate argument for allowing nudity in a game. I guess it depends on your point of view. Yes, everyone who lives in North America is aware of the disparity between the depiction of violence and sex in the media. I live in the U.S. and this fact has always frustrated me. Sex and nudity go hand in hand. Sex is also a natural, everyday occurrence for the human race. It happens everywhere, all day and everyday. Billions of people experience it. It is commonplace. You get the point. On the other hand, overt acts of violence (especially excessive violence) is a thing that is statistically scarce. Very few people will ever see a dead body that is the result of a violent act up close and personal. When it comes to the media, however, it is far more acceptable to show someone being stabbed to death on ABC Family, on a weekend during midday (no seriously, I Know what You Did Last Summer was on ABC Family). Serial killings, blood, guts, exploded heads, zombies eating faces. Those are all extremely graphic and unnatural depictions of violence.

Some people have argued that it is a cultural thing, which it is, but that isn't the best argument against the OP. I get it. Depictions of sex being worse than depictions of violence is the result of a social construction that I do not agree with. To sum it up. My issue is not that violence is depicted in the media. My issue is that sex is treated as taboo despite it's natural prevalence as part of the human experience.

If Bioware wants to push boundaries like they stated, they should actually do it. If they are worried about closing doors because of full on nudity, fine but don't have characters shower or have sex fully clothed. It's silly. Make the models naked and utilize the camera in a way that masks the "naughty areas". Personally, I think Bioware backed down too much in this area after ME1 and it's sad. There is more than one way to push boundaries, but in this area they failed. It was obvious in ME1 they were attempting it to an extent (not to push boundaries but to treat its target audience as being able to handle nudity) with the romance scenes but they folded in ME2.

I was going to write a super long post with my theory on the matter, but decided to be lazy instead.

Violence=dominate/masculine=bare chest (with nipples!)

Sex=intimate/feminine=COVER UP THINK OF THE CHILDREN WE CAN"T LET THEM SEE!!!!

By this logic, MENExt should also feature a toilet minigame.  Perhaps with wiping as a bonus round,

I mean, it's even more common and everyday, amirite  :D

Can you explain the sex=feminine part? Last I checked, crushing booty was a manly pastime. I think I know what you're going for but since you did go lazy style, it can be misconstrued.

Yeah...or the far more likely and actually scientifically supported possibility of female breasts being biological sexual cues while male nippes are not.

That logic would work if using the restroom were actually a heavily featured theme in the game. But it isn't.
