I'm still digesting the ending and I can't decide if Joel was Selfish in his choice or not. For those of you who have had a longer time to digest the ending, what conclusions did you come to?

I'm still a pretty young guy, so I don't have the same convictions a father like Joel has. So I can't say I understand his position and would have done the same thing. Yes I saw the bond between the two grow and you cannot deny they grew close, but part of me doesn't feel the happiness of a near elderly man is worth a chance at saving the human race. You can argue I suppose that humanity is too far gone and it would be a wasted effort, but the young foolish optimist in me would have to disagree. During the Bubonic plague Europe was in total panic, and yet they managed to bounce back. So one can argue that it could happen again. So to state my question was Joel Selfish? Or Fully justified in what he did?

He was probably being selfish. He didn't want to lose another 'daughter,' and put that above the potential salvation of the human race. I don't think he really cared about that anyway at that point.

Honestly though, in his shoes I think I would have done the same thing. The 'what would you do' question in this scenario is an interesting judge of character I guess. :S

He was being selfish, but had a different perspective from his own experiences and what he knows, growing up in that world and what I mean by that is - how do we know that the Fireflies will even be able to manufacture, let alone get this cure out?  What if that hospital got overrun with a horde of infected the next time?  There are way too many variables for him to take a chance like that, let alone let someone that he's come to love and view as close as to his own daughter, fade away for what?  That form of humanity?  Is it even worth saving, if they could?  I don't think so.

Would I do what he did?  Most likely not, to be perfectly honest with you, but I really do understand why he did and I respect it and I do believe there is no "right or wrong" in that position.

My personal opinion, I'm glad he didn't, I would of thought about how dangerous the fireflies are, giving them Ellie and if it does happen, the cure, this would make the fireflies an incredibly powerful group who could simply abuse this power.

Not only that, how will they distribute the cure world wide? I don't think they will even bother trying, use this as a reason to recruit more people, expanding in numbers and power.

Joel was totally being selfish, but also its very easy to sympathize with his position.  I know I would have done that same thing.  Not many games let you be the "bad guy" and make you feel okay with it, if a little uneasy.

As for justification, there is nothing completely cut and dry, but if I remember correctly, the doctor's notes suggest they had attempted this before without success.  What is to say this will actually work?  What if they are just telling Joel and Ellie what they want to hear to manipulate them?  Who knows?
