Answer?
Would you like a second opinion?
The origins of users' avatars aren't always blatantly obvious, so I don't see it as a major issue. Some need it, some don't.... is this a thread for the blind people who can't see avatars themselves?
My new one's Blackjack from the 2500+ Page Novel Project Horizons. Everyone's donning the MLP avatars, so why not.

Original Artwork is here.

This guy is an annoying foe.
He will troll you when the player character is at levels 1-5.
Once you reach level 6, he doesn't pose much of a threat.
Pitty. I wanted the trolls to troll the player character.
The frost troll is more challenging than regular trolls though.

Mine is Pike Bishop of Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch, the movie that immortalized the line, "If they move, kill'em." During a stickup at a bank, Bishop says the line and at that moment, the screen goes to a black and white freeze-frame of Bishop's face with the text "Directed by Sam Peckinpah."

Mine is of the character Nami from One Piece. The picture is a cropped rendering of a non-canon scene from the manga, where she is on either the Merry-go or the Thousand Sunny-go, and the pirate ship is anchored just outside the Island of Woman, Amazon Lily. Nami has never been anywhere near the island.
I love Nami, and I love One Piece. Sexy + comedy = Nami
Not much else to say, really.

Ushering in the new order of "things".
Some consider us corrupt and evil.
But we are.... A necessity. The vanguard that stands between order and chaos.
We are...... The Order.
But most know us as Abstergo Industries. "We change the world, everyday. In a hundred different ways"

The character in my Avatar was created by me. I know on a lot of message boards, people tend to use game characters or anime characters to represent them in their avatars, but I wanted to be more unique, so I created my own character to represent me on the internet. Here are two full-size pictures of my character:
