Did you ever play as opposite sex? I played couple of times in NWN1 as male, but in NWN2 only as female. I'm currently playing SOZ and all my party members are girls (girl power, yeah!).

Is it worth playing as opposite sex? Do you get different conversation options as in NWN1 or could you access certain tasks as in NWN1 (Tymora)?

As far as I know only some very minor conversations are different other than the romance options differences. You get different romance options in the OC and Mask of the Betrayer. There aren't any romance options I am aware of in SoZ.

Most of the time my SoZ party was all-female as well, though it did vary depending on which companions I was traveling with at the time.  I tended to go with Chir, Inshula, Lastri, and Soraevora for most of the time.

It's true that in SoZ there doesn't seem to be any real difference in dialogues for male or female characters, though.  There might be some minor differences, though certainly nothing as major as a romance.  I didn't experience any romance in the OC, though I did play a male in Mask of the Betrayer so I could romance Safiya, and it was a good one.

In Mysteries of Westgate, at least one NPC will interact differently with a male as opposed to a female.  Also, you have the option elsewhere to say "Hello, beautiful" or "Hello, handsome" depending on whether you're male or female.

Minor differences, but you know.  :)

Many of the romances are designed primarily for the men and I think that is where most of the gender specific dialogue is focused.

To address that I think you can pick up some extra options, say for romancing the evil ranger, whose name escapes me. I've never taken npc's in SoZ but there are no romances there and thus, no gender specific dialogue that I know of?

It makes me think about my own work as I write this. I have included little that is gender specific except a romance which is for the male player. Perhaps I can do something about that.

I've experimented with several female characters, but I haven't use any of them in the official campaigns. They've mostly been used to play other people's modules.

My most notable female character was a 60-year-old grey-haired chaotic-evil fighter / weapon master who worshipped Cyric. She was quite handy with a scythe, despite her grandmotherly appearance.

Well there you go.

I would have thought a woman who spent that much time practicing with & using a scythe, would have had a bad back before she was 60.

It just goes to show the power of prayer ah.

Time for you to jump back into the OC and romance Elanee.  Similar to a fancy sports car, a shiney new Candlekeep impresses the babes.  With "The NWN2 Facelift Pack" by Xaltar, Elanee spruces up nicely.

;)

It's true that I've been wanting to go through the OC again, and I do like Elanee...  And I'm indeed using Xaltar's pack.  I'll probably do that, and try out Kaldor Silverwand's OC makeover as well.

Candlekeep? Are women turned on by crusty old men reading books now?

As a crusty old(ish) man who reads a lot, that comes as a disappointment.

Oddly enough I have been doing the same of recent. KS's pack makes a big difference in the dynamic of the game as you can multiclass the npc's. Neshka makes a very acceptable mage/rogue and Elanee an okay tanks with a few levels of fighter in there. It makes it a bit fresher which I need if I am going to drag myself through the whole OC again.

Yes, for variety I've played both sexes, although usually it makes not a whit of difference. A game where I did notice the gender of the character was in Mass Effect 2--to me the femshep gave the game a whole different dynamic that made it worth replaying.

It might be interesting to have a pair of recruitable companions that only join your party based on the gender of the leader--one for a male and the other for a female, then give each an entirely different personality and motivations.

'Amazons & Misogynists'. A great title for a module.

I'm currently playing Adam Miller's NWN1 Shadowlords  mod & as a woman I am romancing Anera.  I pointed out that I was in fact a woman & she was fine with that.

But then later we spoke of if we have a child together. :o

It will be interesting to see later in the mod (Demon) when we end up with a daughter if there is any explanation for this, or if the mod assumes I'm a man & Anera's bisexuality was an after thought added later.

Adam Miller is not a Hall-of-Famer for nothing.  I'm sure I played that module (probably repeatedly), but I don't recall running into your particular conundrum.  But I would be shocked if he didn't address it.

Still - in a world where polymorphing is available, is it really a stretch* for two women to have a child?

Let us know what happens - I am curious.

[edit]  * I just realized that this could be taken as a truly awful pun - and I now claim full credit for it as intentional.

Here's how Adam covered it.

Anera:  " Never have I been as thankful for my  celestial blood as I was when we conceived our dear Rowen, " She smiles knowingly.

" I'm not certain my mother approves of you completely. Still, she seemed happy enough to help us bear a grandchild. For that I owe her thanks "

Celestial intervention.

Another funny bit is when you meet Idona's nana, she try's to hook you up with her. If you say "but I'm a woman" she says "sorry dear my eyes aren't what they used to be."

I'd still be suspicious. Especially if the child ended up resembling the local milkman, pizza delivery boy, or pool cleaner.

When creating parties, I like having a balance of male and female characters.

But I don't mind at all playing as a female. (Male myself).
I think that some class concepts work better as a female. At least for me.

For example Bard, Sorcerer, Cleric, Druid, Rogue etc.
I like Barbarians, Fighters, Paladins, Wizards, Monks to be male though.

Generally, classes that focus on Charisma and Wisdom seem more feminine to me.
I don't like, as much, to have my guy be really pretty and too suave.

And I like my male characters to be the more buff or bookworms (Wizards).

Not saying that it's not possible or that female don't excel in those areas.
(I admire female warriors and generally like the classic librarian type mage).

It's more of a personal preference.

For example, I think a healer, religious or tuned with nature, or a sneaky rogue that uses her wits, charm and sneakiness is more fitting to a female.

While someone that doesn't care about looks or is generally a warrior that lives or dies by the sword or a wizard that spends countless hours over books and is a smartass is more fitting to a male.

I like my Wizards as male and my Sorcerer(ess) as female.

I guess those are subconscious stereotypes but an analogy would be a Half-Orc Wizard or a Gnome Barbarian, I guess. ;)

But, I have made female Monks, male Rogues, male Druids, male Sorcerers and female Paladins and enjoyed them still.

If you play the module "Serene", there are some humorous moments depending on gender when you discover you may or may not be committing incest.  One of the author's wittier moments.

I believe in NWN1 there were a few more gender-specific modules. The only ones I can think of for NWN2 is Hunt through the Dark, which is Underdark-centric and it won't make much sense playing a female. Another one is probably Fall of House Celoraie (sp?), which also would make less sense if you were to play female because you play a drow mercenary and spy for Jaezred Chaulssin. Would make no sense for a female to worship Vhaeraun. Drow girls have better things to do than go on quests (aka yell at males).

NWN1 had A Librarian's Tale (must be female), and Aribeth's Redemption (must be male). Both were excellent modules; the latter's story is completed, the former abandoned at chapter 1. Shame, really. Haven't really seen anything like A Librarian's Tale since. There's Sex and the Single Adventuress, which is females only, but I've never played it, so I don't actually know if it'd work with a male. Probably not.

I do tend to favour females, for various reasons. My SoZ party was three males and a female, but my OC/MoTB campaign was female because I didn't want to romance Safiya. I did regret the choice during the OC, because Casavir/Bishop triangle was getting irritating, and I found Casavir asking for extra exercise right before a big battle to be a little amateur. NWN1 OC I played a male, but the subsequent expansions I played a female. Dragon Age: Origins I played a female (neither female romances interested me, and I just couldn't make a male that didn't look anorexic (elf) or over 30 (human)). Dragon Age II I picked female simply because I couldn't make a decent looking male. I also tend to consider the deity if the character is a cleric, as that can be gender-specific.

I'm a very story/lore-centric player, so that influences my choices a lot. I'd never make a female drow weapon master, for instance.

NWN1 also has "A dance with rogues" and "Gladiatrix" for females. NWN2 has "Planescape: The shaper of dreams"... I can't think of any other gender-restricted modules at the moment, even though some are more suited to a particular gender (for instance, I think "Tales from the Lake of Sorrows" only has a romance for males).

Without giving spoilers, what feels like the absolutely best ending in DAO is only possible with (human) females, even though the difference is not THAT great.

Forgot about A Dance with Rogues.

Human Female ending for DA:O wasn't that good for me. I come from a country where (until just very recently) had the royal heir problem, and I can just see it happening in Ferelden in a few years. That, and I liked the other guy... Bioware/Obsidian needs to start thinking about making pretty faces for boys as an option. I'm not asking everyone in the game to look like a Square-Enix character, but they all seem to have open pores or jaws that can substitute as a nutcracker. I guess the elf from DA2 was a bit Square-ish, but his face structure was way off balance.

I'm not even going to discuss NWN2's faces. In the world of uglies, that game took the cake. I'm not sure who came up with Gann's face morph, but isn't he supposed to be so pretty they threw him in jail? Weren't Casavir and Bishop supposed to be handsome? I'm still waiting for the handsome Casavir to appear.
