We all know about the huge veil tears in Inquisition, but I haven't seen much speculation yet as to what causes them. This is obviously the main source of tension in the game and the explanation will likely lead to the end game, one way or another.

So, what do you think caused the veil tears?

One of the only theories I've seen is that Corypheus is the cause. The theory is that Corypheus possessed a grey warden to leave his prison, similarly to how an Arch Demon can possess a darkspawn. Why would he be doing this, though? I don't think we could possibly know what sort of motivations he has at this point. I do believe Corypheus is alive and we'll see him again, but I don't know if I think he could have done this on his own.

Another theory is that it's something to do with Flemeth and/or Morrigan. Between Flemeth, Morrigan and Yavana, there's a lot of information that could link up with this event. Flemeth is implied to have an ongoing plan for who knows what that she's been collecting hero pawns to complete since basically the start of the story as we know it. She and Morrigan have both made a lot of commentary about chaos and change being a good thing. Flemeth mentions being on the "precipice of change" to Hawke and Morrigan makes an extremely similar speech to the Warden before going into the Eluvian in Witch Hunt. Yavana mentions there was a time before the fade, which is interesting information considering the fade may be disappearing again.

It could also just be something we've never seen before. What do you think?

Mages. My suspicion that some of them tried to use some demons against the Templars. But please BW, prove that I'm wrong and make a more interesting story about the Veil being torn.

I don't really think it's related to the mage/templar situation because of the simple fact that Gaider said it wasn't the main focus of the game. If mages caused the tear then there wouldn't be a "bigger cause" than their dispute.

Is Flemeth somehow involved with the events I have no doubt. Given what little we know of her I am sure she is somehow involved with most big events that happens in Thadeus or atleast she is one of the big players in the game who always has a pawn.

Is Flemeth herself directly responsible I doubt it. I dont feel its the case here. I feel her plans seem much more bigger and complex than this to be honest. I dont think her hand revealed so soon in the series.

Corypheus having something to do with it would make sense since he survives and escapes no matter what. Maybe he found other ancient magisters as well (the Architect is either dead or...saner then Corypheus so I'm excluding him for now) and they tried to get to the Black city again, causing the Veil to tear?

I like the theory that the golden city was always black on the inside, and just looked gold to everyone in the fade to lure in someone to come and release the taint within. Now that taint has once again escaped bonds, only this time from the entire fade and into the normal world.

I don't think The Architect is actually a magister, like Corypheus. I think he's just an intelligent darkspawn emissary. Supposedly he's the first and it's unclear how he got that way. It's possible that he is also a magister and just didn't remember, as Corypheus did. He says he was always as he is in Awakening, that he knows of.

I could see Corypheus maybe siding with the intelligent darkspawn in some way, though. He's basically closer to what they are than anything else.

I don't think it is the cause of any one person, but there will no doubt be a antagonist to try and gain something from them regardless.

The leader of the Red Templars did it in an attempt to reach the Black City and become a god.

At least that is what was in the leak.

Flemeth tearing open Kirkwall once and for all via the creeptacular Blood Magic Ritual Chamber beneath the city.

"Thanks for all the blood running the streets, people I manipulated into being here! BWAHAHA!"

Which particular leak are you talking about. I was away from BSN for sometime must have missed it...

The Architect could have jumped into Velanna's sister. Of course there is nothing to prove it, but there is also nothing to disprove it.

I personally believe that he's amnesiac and that he only remembers his title before the Golden City incident, him being the magister responsable with the maintenance and expansion of the Imperial Highway.

There was a leak about it?

It's not all, but it's all I could find. Most of it must have been swallowed by the deep depths of the Internet.

I have a totally-baseless 'theory' about who/what could be behind the veil tears.

Reposting one my posts from another thread:

----

I wonder if those crazy cult-guys, the Venatori, are relevant at all. They kept saying 'He will rise again!' in that gameplay demo. So I wonder if this dude they're talking about has something to do with the veil tearing, so he can 'rise again' or something. Don't know who 'He' is. Or they're just a bunch of loons who shout random crap.

Maybe... it's Flemeth! ....Yeah, no.

It has like no basis but, still. I'm obsessing over what, exactly, the Venatori are

----

This is just me wanting them to be something other than a crazy group of.. crazies. They seemed to have the serpent-y Tevinter banner things on their armor, which were also seen in a keep with a huge red lyrium crystal in it, and a bunch of corpses*.

Maybe this dude they're talking about has something to do with Corypheus? Maybe he is Cory.

Not sure if this has any supporting or contradicting evidence but whatever, speculation is speculation.

The only thing that strikes me as being a lot different about Corypheus and The Architect is that Corypheus has a lot more human skin tone and features. That could just be because they were designed in different games, though.

Are we sure that's the main plot and not just the element dealing with the Red Templar specifically? I just wonder, because usually we have a handful of things going on with different groups that we have to solve on the way.

My guess is some crazy conspiracy with roots in every part of Thedas. Maybe we met some of their members before, but we haven't heard of their organization. As for their reason, maybe to pull another Fade walk or to choose the synthesis ending to stop the mage-templar conflict that has happened in every cycle.

Whatever the case, I really hope that we meet a new enemy or enemy organization. Flemeth and Corypheus are mentioned often because we lack imagination. "It's a powerful, mysterious mage! It has to be them!". As if there weren't more powerful, mysterious mages in the setting. Ok, they may be the villains behind the Veil Tears, but they may be not. Why not imagine what kind of enemy would want or be able to do it before jumping to the usual suspects?

This is how The Architect looks under the mask.

He looks pretty human to me. You can also notice that his headgear seems to have welded to his head, just like in Cory's case

face--article_image.jpg

Add to this their very similar clothes and I can say that all we need now it's an official confirmation that The Architect is one of The Magisters.

When it comes to the leak...that was a long time ago. Things might have changed and I really hope that they have (unless Cory is the leader of the Red Templars)

I can see the resemblance there. It would make sense, being we have no other logical explanation for him becoming sentient.

That said, based on what they've implied about a being a mage making things... different for the Inquisitor in general, I have a feeling that there have to be SOME mages at the time of the Veil Tear if only because it sounds like people will be blaming them.

Based off of the Forbidden Knowledge and Enigma of Kirkwall codex entries, I wouldn't be surprised if the Forbidden Ones and/or some of their crazed followers were behind the veil tears.

...It is well known that the Veil is thin in Kirkwall, small wonder given the suffering in the city. But we've discovered the magisters were deliberately thinning it even further. Beneath the city, demons can contact even normal men. Did they seek the Black City to compound the madness of their previous efforts? Or was it something else?

...a flood of tomes is on the market. Even the simple fences know something is amiss—they've raised their prices at the frenzy of collectors. One said he sold a copy of the Fell Grimoire! I doubt he would lie; how could he know that tome is a mere legend?
If that is real, then what of the Forgotten Ones? This journey has taken us to many strange places, and made us re-evaluate many former truths. Where will it end?

...We went to the center of it all. F. is dead and I am alone and injured. I must go back and put an end to it. The maddening thing is there is still no answer. But the Forgotten One, or demon or whatever it is, must be destroyed. I fear one may already be unbound...

From the unknown mage's account: "The first of the magus cast themselves deep in the Fade in search of answers and power, always power. They found the forbidden ones — Xebenkeck, Imshael, Gaxkang the Unbound, and The Formless One. Many conversations were had and much of the fabric of the world revealed. And thus the magic of blood was born."

Excerpt from The Last Letters of Tarohne: I have copied the [Fell Grimoire] and hidden it. It must live on. It is the signpost of The Path, and The Path never dies. I have set guardians along it, but you must overcome them. Read the signs, my brothers and sisters. For even if my enemies destroy me, together we cannot fail. There are secrets undreamt of deep in the Fade. Therein lies our destiny—our salvation.

Gaxkang was wandering the mortal realm for a millennia before the Warden caught up to him.  Xebenkeck can be defeated in DA2. That leaves Imshael and The Formless One at large. Perhaps in Inquisition they will play a larger role than hidden boss fight...

This.

The band of Three did quite a thorough job of going over the details of Kirkwall. In particular, the following:
- Kirkwall was built in the shape of large magical symbols

- Kirkwalls sewers were built with grooves to collect the blood of the fallen into a massive reservoir

- Thousands of slaves each year (not to mention the other assorted peoples of Kirkwall) went missing or were killed, giving blood to this reservoir

- The veil had been intentionally weakened around Kirkwall by the Magisters, and its entirely possible the magic is still weakening during/after the events of Da2

It stands to reason that when the tear happened, it was because of the blood magic weakening the veil in that area for who knows how long.

I guess it has something to do with Red Lyrium...it seems there's some red lyrium veins in the fade now....

Tearing the veil requires magic/bloodshed.I think red lyrium is equal to bloodmagic.

So red lyrium's growing , the veil is tearing.

So the bad guys would be Varric and Hawke ! And Flemeth for letting them fulfil their destiny...?

I hope there is no main villain who did this on purpose , I think it's funnier if the world is destroying itself because the veil is not natural , but without the veil = big chaos and people can't survive.

Well, based on this informaton I wonder if Kirkwall could have been the place where the original Magisters performed the ritual and entered Black City.

Now according to the leak, some mysterious figure, a leader of the Red Templars seems to be interested in doing just that.

It very reasonably could have been John Locke.
