So what do you think is going to be wrong with Varric?

Not saying that he can't possibly be the same lovable dwarf that we knew in DA2, but Bioware has a distinguished track record of either developing a returning companion in different/unexpected ways (Garrus ME1-ME2, Anders DAO-DA2) or ignoring character progression (Oghren DA:O-DA:A).

Varric didn't seem to get much character progression in DA:2 in comparison to other companions, who tended to look to Hawke for guidance about where to take their lives. The only real difference is the (vague) "Varric will tell your story someday" and "Someday Varric will tell your story... whether you like it or not."

It seems like a foregone conclusion that Varric is going to have been changed somehow between 9:37-40 Dragon. What do you think it will be? Will he be moody and introspective all of a sudden? Will he become a dwarven Batman? Will he, out of nowhere, acquire a conventional moral compass and bash the Inquisitor over the head with it whenever he's feeling edgy?

I hope we get to see brianca (the woman not the crossbow) in DAI. It would certainly shake varric up.

I'm thinking it will be of the "moody and introspective" variety. I see his being racked with guilt over his role in bringing red lyrium to the surface as an important part of his character arc.

I don't foresee him being totally unrecognizable, though. Brian Bloom mentioned in the latest video that one of his favorite lines of Varric's is, "I know I'm not dead, because there would be more women here". You don't get more quintessentially Varric then that.

I wouldn't be surprised if you, the Inquisitor, do things during the game that he doesn't agree with. he will leave.

I hope the decision to give him the red lyrium shard in DA2 is acknowledged. Even if it has tragic consequences.

And +1 to wanting him to get some sort of closure with Bianca.

From what we saw of Varric in the demo I'd say he hasn't changed much personality wise. And as for 'picking a side', to me, Varric has and always will be on the side of the 'innocents' in any situation.

I think in Inquisition he will be one part along for the ride, one part beginning to feel more responsible for situations he can change/do something about and two parts Bianca story line.

Wrong with Varric?  Nothing.  Nothing at all; he's perfect.

And he'll be his witty, resourceful, super-competent, kind self.  And with any luck, he'll be able to see past Bianca, now that he can carry other weapons, and notice the Inquisitor who will have eyes only for him.  Which at least one of my Inquisitors will, if the writers are kind. :)

My thought is that the game starts in Kirkwall, which gets promptly leveled. This singular event sparks a change in Varric that makes him turn proactive to the ongoing of the world. Also he somehow gets a nice scar on his nose and dyes his hair. Deal with it.

Aha! A kindred spirit.

I agree. Varric will be funny and wonderful and  great to have around. I'm looking forward to adventuring with him again.

As I've said before, I suspect Varric's story arc will involve him trying to atone for unleashing red lyrium on the world.

He's distraught over the destruction of Crestwood because it was caused by the Red Templars, making him indirectly responsible.

Well, it'll be interesting b/c we actually get to see Varric this time, as opposed to hearing who Varric is from Varric/seeing Varric through potentially rosetinted glasses. He won't be glossing over, say, his own character development? maybe. (Definitely don't want that to imply I don't love Varric, b/c I do, but I do think it will be interesting to see if anything changes as a result)

I think the piece of the idol he may have gotten from Bartrand could come into play. It would be an interesting choice from DA2 to carry over...not necessarily something 'wrong' with him, but it could impact him...somehow.

One word........ Bianca....we will finally find out about the woman from whom the crossbow was named after and something tells me its gonna be one of the most tragic moments of DA:I . Dont get me wrong I love varric but it will be interesting to see how he handles the issue.

If Varric is gonna be wracked with guilt over his part in bringing red lyrium to the world I am going to be miffed. I despise people who do this. "Oh I sent Little Billy to buy some milk when he fell in the well and drowned! IT'S ALL MY FAULT." It's so egotistical. It's also such a cliche. Every mainstream hero has this ridiculously misplaced guilt complex. Varric had no idea red lyrium even existed and he wasn't even the one to bring it to the surface so it's complete horseshit for him to feel guilty over it. I'm hoping this is not the case though, Varric did not seem to be the type to take the blame if he wasn't responsible.

I am expecting him to be somewhat more introspective and quiet, but not unrecognizably so. I imagine it's a natural enough reaction from seeing/knowing too much.

Option 1. His brother is still alive (and still mad) and Varric has to do something about him.

Option 2. Hawke giving Varric the chip of red lyrium in DA2 turns out to be a monumentally bad idea.

Option 3. Varric loses the comb he uses to groom his chest hair and you must find him a new one.

Option 4. Living through the onset of patent chest baldness.

Option 5. Someone touched Bianca's cocking mechanism. And, oh, will there be a reckoning.
