Dev Question: Rogue class Feedback
#26
Posté 22 janvier 2010 - 01:49
I like the stealthy, backstabbing, dual-wielding dagger rogue, and I'd almost always lean that way for any rogue in my party, whether a PC or NPC, so I find the number of talents and the range of specializations particulary good for developing that type of character.
I tend to get annoyed with the way lock-picking is designed and curse my inability to unlock so many chests with three levels or more of the talent, even when cunning is also boosted, too. As well, there are too many skills that a rogue would want to cover (poison making, traps, stealing, combat, and survival) and too few for the other classes, making the skills heavily weighted to rogue classes (as evidenced by the number of points they get to spend to compensate).
Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
I find range to be very underpowered when compared to a dual-wielding rogue, but it may be my bias towards the style that makes me think that. However, in use, I've found a rogue that is fighting in melee, backstabbing and with rapid attacks, to be far more effective than one at range, and just more enjoyable to play.
What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
Favorites are Duelist and Assassin, and I prefer them as a set, too. I don't have a lot of experience with Ranger, since it seems more of a bow-wielding rogue's choice and I don't care for range rogues. And since Leliana always has Bard, I tend to ignore it and favour other talents as I'm building her and my own rogues.
What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
Dual Weapon and Rogue, of course. I love Flurry (it's probably one of my most used talents along with Dirty Fighting). I never used Feign Death (seems to be an incredibly underpowered top-teir rogue talent). Stealth and the lock-picking line are always useful.

What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
Archery is my favorite talent tree though somewhat hindered with the lack of functionality of the UI, specifically the targeting functions. At range with a rogue selecting a target via mouse click only isn't as efficient as being able to select targets via keyboard mapping.

I like the sneakiness. The backstabbing, the lock picking, the being able to steal. Disarming traps could use work. It's clunky and difficult. An auto-pause on trap detection could help.Victor Wachter wrote...

Lockpicking doesn't belong as a talent. The whole rogue-related business of traps and locks and pickpocketing just doesn't seem like it's organized well. Something seems off.
Nothing is really overpowered, but archery could use some help. The abilities seem a little bland, without enough robust active abilties or secondary effects. It also needs a better AOE.
I haven't tried the bard yet, but I love bards in other games. If the songs don't constantly drain stamina, I like the class -- I don't know if they do however.
Duelist and Assassin seem decent enough, but I kind of wish Ranger could do more than just summon pets.
I kind of feel like raising Cunning carries the high price of costing you Attack. And I really, really don't like to miss. Unsure what could/should be done about this, if anything.

* What do you like and dislike about the Rogue?
Pretty much everything. I love being able to sneak around, I love the utility it brings, I love being able to "tank" (not getting hit) and literally laying waste to enemies whether it be via setting up traps, sniping from afar, slitting throats with venom encrusted blades, pretty much the amount of versatility it brings to the table.
In addition, I feel like I'm RPing the most with this class. I've had one game on Nightmare where I utilized Lel and Zev as Bards with bows (thank you respec mod) and had it play out as an assassination trio; made me really feel like a team of Antivan Crows.
What do I dislike? Pretty much armor options. There are only two options I would go with aesthetically: the Felon's Coat and Ancient Elven Armor set. The only other one I'd wear is Wade's set and that's out of necessity (not really once you get a feel for the game and the combat mechanics). I want my character to look flashy when he's gutting someone because you have to leave a good impression on your victim (plus you're going to be the last thing they'll ever see!)
Minor gripes would be how similar the dual wield tree is similar to the warrior dual wield barring the differences how you utilize the tree, in addition to the archer tree being the same as well. In addition, they're STARVED for talent points. 8 talent points for utility by itself is a bit excessive. I can understand Stealth but the other 4 (lockpicking)... yeah. Then there's also the dex issue for the weapons.
* Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
There's not really anything TOO overpowered in my opinion. I would comment upon Momentum but that's based upon the Dual Wield tree itself and it leans more towards the fact that Momentum is cancelled by Haste but Warriors from what I've heard can get around that by activating Precise Striking but that's straying into a different topic altogether.
In terms of archery, the firing speed is slightly lackluster but I've grown accustomed to it. The reason I had a gripe for it in the first place was because the aim speed allowed me to pick off like one/two enemies before the entire mob was upon me (with a tank, I wouldn't have had this problem but it was a nightmare solo). In addition to that, archery doesn't even go with the Assassin spec! I understand that backstab is with stabbing tools like daggers but Assassins also attack from afar if possible. It doesn't work with Upset Balance (which would be extremely useful if an enemy manages to catch you up close and Dirty Fighting was in cooldown) or Pinpoint Strike.
Overall, it's the stamina issue. If you're not an auto-attacking Rogue, then you're going to burn through your stamina rapidly with no way to restore it unless you stay out of combat in Stealth/Feign Death/have access to Feast of the Fallen (which doesn't even restore that much to begin with and it's extremely conditional)
But overall, Rogues on their own depending on how you build them, excel at the roles they were built for.
* What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
Easily Assasin/Duelist. They work really well together especially when you're running solos. Bards are alright; I appreciate them for their support but I don't see myself putting my MC as a Bard; he's stage shy. Least favorite would be Ranger. They don't work in the Fade from what I've heard and the summons, while good aggro-absorbers in their own right, lack some talents you'd find on similar monster counterparts. Example: Wolves, Bears and Spiders all have Overwhelm. Your summons don't. In addition to that, they don't persist through areas.
* What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
On paper, I absolutely love archery. I've ALWAYS picked archers for every RPG that had it available, even before I got to know the term DPS was associated to them. However, seeing as how we have only two choices in talent trees, I have to say archery is the lesser of the two. The reason being that as an archer in this game, I feel like more of a supporting class. In addition to that, like I mentioned before, many archer talents aren't even compatible with two specializations!
Dual Wield by far is the better of the two in my opinion. There's just so much more you can do with it and the the specializations all work in tandem with it.

Like -- I love archers.
Dislike -- I don't feel that the game really calls for rogue-ishness. If I didn't need a rogue class for opening chests, I don't see what the point would be. I don't really poison my blades. I don't really sneak. I guess I could but I've never thought, "Gee, if I could sneak here, that would really help," or "Golly -- I really should start poisoning my weapons."
Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
Overpowered: Lockpicking.
Underpowered: Not enough wow-inducing loot, maybe?
What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
Bard is pretty bloody great. I havent' tried ranger, but aim to ... (pun intended).
Duelist and Assassin seem less like they could have just been integrated as talent trees.
What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
Favorite: Archery.
Least Favorite: all of the actual Rogue-only talents.

And now it's the Rogue's turn. As we continue to plan for the future of the Dragon Age franchise, we're interested in hearing your feedback regarding the different classes.
In this thread, we'd like to ask your opinions of the Rogue class. You can still comment in last week's Warrior topic. Next week's topic will cover the Mage.

Be sure to answer the poll on Rogue specializations as well!
They have good utility and have a great damage output if you use melee attacks. Evasion, Stealth and feign death.
Dislikes:
Poison doesn't apply to bows, actually bows are seriously gimped all up but that's a different issue.
Underpowered:
Bows and bow abilities. Bows can't have runes
and sustained enchantments don't affect them and posions don't affect
them. Ammo is extremely rare where a melee weapon is constantly
enchanted by runes and sustained enchantments and it's quite easy to
get a better armour penetration with a melee weapon than the bow. All
bow abilities take far longer to activate than melee abilities. Bows
are a fairly important weapon for Rogues as they can be quite squishy.
Overpowered:
Stealth in the middle of combat hides you from everything, maybe bosses should still be able to see you.
Specialisations:
I found the Bard and Ranger specialisations to be fairly useless. An Assassin / Duelist combo is devestating on the other hand.
Talent Trees:
I filled out the Rogue Talent tree first then started working on Dual Wield.
Bow
abilities can be handy I guess but because they take so long to go off
it's quite weak, I only took the bow tree to get the acheivement.

I've always liked thieves/rogues, and I like the stealthy killer aspect. So I suppose that would be the backstabbing and such. Oh, and the poison.
The thing I dislike the most (mechanically) is that the lockpicking and stealth trees are talents, not skills. It seems odd, especially since trap-making/disarming and poison using are skills. I assume it is that way so that they're rogue specific, but maybe it would also work to have some class specific skills. It also makes it pretty hard to built a rogue who can sneak, lock-pick and do effective combat, but maybe that was the point.
I'm also not fond of the way the armour all looks pretty much the same. It would be nice if some of the more powerful/expensive/hard to find ones looked signifcantly different.
I also like the number of passive talents they get. I like those better than the activated ones, usually.
Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
I've never been very good at balancing things or judging the balance of things. So... the number of stats needed is a bit high, maybe. Daggers are, I think, a mite overpowered with the patch, but obviously under without it. Not sure how you'd fix that.
What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
Assassin and Duelist are my favourites and Bard my least favourite of the ones I've used. I haven't yet got around to touching Ranger, so I don't know what that one's like. My dislike of Bard isn't anything against the way it's implemented in the game, though; I'm just not fond of playing support characters.
What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
I like the one with Dirty Fighting, Combat Movement and Coupe de Grace. Those are all quite useful. I also like all the dual-weapon ones, especially the Momentum/Whirlwind one.
The one that starts with Below the Belt is my least favourite (though I'm sure that would be different if I usually played cunning-based rogues), and I've never been much for archery characters.

I also liked all of the rogue specializations since they were all useful. I would have been happier if the ranger pets required a little less stamina for upkeep though.
Once the patch was introduced, daggers became very effective but a dagger rogue became an unstoppable killing machine late in the game which lessened the fun for me.

Dislike: Their tier 4 skills are comparatively weak -- Fake Death is entirely redundant with tier 4 Stealth, which is pretty overpowered if that's what you're looking for. Not enough rogue specific equipments, particularly compared to Warriors.

Can't say there is anything I really enjoy about rogue. I kinda lucked out choosing rogue for my first playthrough. I dislike that you have to have a lock picking character.
Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
As a class I feel very bleh about it. It's not bad but its not amazing so I guess its a good place to be.
What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
Ranger is my favorite only because I like the idea of having a pet. I was very disappointed that there is no "Summoner" class for mages. Duelist is a very close second, I play my rogue more like a warrior so having more defensive abilities was a godsend.
Least favorite... probably Assassin, by comparison it is the least interesting.
What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
I could care less for all of them. The only ones worth it are the Evasion skill and Lockpicking (purely out of nessicity.)

Favorite melee character, like the range of talents, like the damage they can deal with the higher level talents.
Dislikes:
Ranger spec is useless and should have more powerful summons.
Like others have said the play dead talent is useless.
Archery is underpowerd in the vanilla game so much so I use the archery mods.
The armor in general for rogues is poor both aesthetically and in terms of special bonuses.
Overpowered:
Once their dex and cunning reaches a sufficient level nothing seems to be able to touch a rogue.
Underpowered:
Archery
Ranger summons
Best spec:
Duelist, bard
Worst spec:
Ranger
Favorite talent trees:
Dual Wield, stealth
Least favorite:
Archery

What do you like and Dislike about the Rogue?
Like:
I like everything about the class so far. In particular, I like archery with the class. As I commented in my warrior feedback, the archery tree doesn't fit that class since it focuses on debuffs and crowd control. On the other hand, it works well for the sabotage nature of a rogue. Combine the tree with rogue specific skills like Dirty fighting and Combat Stealth to slip away from pursuers and you have a pretty tactical gameplay experience that's very fun. Though, you are pretty squishable in the beginning and Dirty fighting is pretty much, your lord and master until you get combat stealth
Overall, I like the interactivity of the class. Very fun. Kudos on a job well done with this one devs!
Dislike:
As someone else already said in the thread...I want pretty armor!!! I'm tired of Alistair and all the other warriors showing off how much more cool they look in their Heavy and Massive Armor while I have to run around in my bland armor!...*coughs as he gets his composure back* So yeah, there aren't any nice looking armor for a Rogue and I'd like to see some prettier armor in the future or a cloak, that would be good too but that's less likely to happen
Also, no poison on arrows and you have to be pretty close to a crowd to throw bombs? Por que?!!!!
Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
I didn't feel like there was anything that was overpowered in my playthrough.
Underpowered? Hmmmmm, I suppose I think Pinning Shot is a bit underpowered. It feels like it shouldn't auto-disable when you attack someone pinned down with one of your arrows if you have the Master Archer skill.
What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
Favorite Specialization is definitely Ranger. I absolutely love having my own personal Blight Wolf at my side ^,^ Animal summons are also a very nice companion for archers. They're very good for getting people off your back and when they get their blight forms, they're very useful for crowd control and taking down enemy mages and archers with their overwhelm ability. Individually, I loved how the wolf is very fast. Put together with my War Dog, they make a very efficient tag team for taking down specific targets away from the battlefield or just simply getting enemies off of Morrigan and I. The bear is a very nice tank character. Good for boss battles where I need my summon to absorb a lot of damage. In his blight form, his rage ability adds a nice boost to attack. Finally, the spider is a nice in between character that manages to distinguish itself with moves that work well on crowds like its Spider Web and Poison Spit.
Least favorite? I have to say, I don't have one in this class.
What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite
My favorite trees would have to be Archery and Stealth tree. Separately they are great and together they are awesome ^,^
Leasy favorite? Hmmmmm, I'm also going to have to say none for this one. All the existing trees are pretty useful. I think you should just focus on adding new trees for this class since the existing trees are already pretty good.

Dirty Fighting and Below the Belt are fun (and extremely satisfying in the City Elf origin...) at the low levels. Higher up, I've found Leliana with archery, bard and, at higher levels, Ranger to be an effective support character - that extra body on the field can make a noticeable difference, but like others I don't see the point in filling out the tree.
A couple of gripes, though:
Deft Hands being a talent rather than a skill seems a little strange, since it's largely an out-of-combat line (some combat applications in combat trap removal, but Trapmaking and Poison are more likely to be used in combat). It might have worked better as a skill that's only available to rogues, rather than a talent line that you feel you're basically forced to take. I'm guessing this one might not be changeable without an engine redesign, however.
Second, Ranger animal companions. Especially since they disappear (and recharge) whenever you go through a transition, it's aggravating to have to reset the tactics of the animal each time its summoned, especially since you only have a small window of opportunity to do so. Either actually restrict it to the skills you get on the skillbar, allow animal companion tactics to be saved and re-accessed, remove the option to assign tactics to animals but give them a set of default tactics appropriate for the kind of animal they are, or putting all of the animal's abilities on their quickbar - any of these would be better than having to click that "New tactics added" message and resetting the animal's tactics every time it gets summoned, with the chance of missing even that opportunity if you aren't waiting for the animal to appear.

My only qualm is the dexterity bug, although that isn't much of a big deal if you consider lethality.
And is it so bad that we can't have a little more of a choice in armor aesthetics?

- I like them having lots of useful talents.
- I dislike not having enough talent points in the beginning to be more useful then opening locks.
- I dislike the armor options. Not only limited but ugly. Enough with the leather skirts. Need some variety in how leather armor looks. Have some that are more ninja looking.
- I dislike the ranged talent tree, just not enough utility or damage.
- I dislike bow options. Need more enchanted bows and better damage output.
- I dislike stealthing to scout enemies while my group stays way back but once enemies are in sight, they run off after the rest of the party even though they were out of line of sight.
- i dislike stealth because it does not work well.
- I dislike like party members running into traps after the rogue detects them. Why can't they go around detected traps automatically when following?
- I dislike not being able to setup and save tactics for ranger pets
* Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
- Ranged talent is underpowered.
- Ranger specialization should give a big boost and additional talents for ranged combat
- dual wield is fine, but warriors should not be as good as rogues
* What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
- Favorite specialization is assasin because its useful
- Least is Bard and Ranger. Ranger pets need to allow tactics to be saved and to boost ranged combat with extra types of attacks. Bards need more variety in songs. Would be nice to have some songs that also raise certain party member approval raitings (maybe once) while lowering other party members' depending on the song and who's in the party. Maybe some party members will dance for you if you play the right song.
* What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
- Favorite talent is two handed (though I wish it was ranged but ranged just sucks too much)
- Least is ranged. Please boost ranged combat. it needs more attacks and enchanted ranged weapons. Also let the Ranger specialization boost this talent tree or add another specialization for ranged.

The rogue is my favorite class. I love using stealth, traps and backstabbing
Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
no.
What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
some are hatin on the ranger, but its a great class and my favorite, other than the fact that you can summon your own tank(not really tanks but something to soak up damage while you backstab) it makes my rogue feel 'magical' and the pets are cool and have useful abilities, except that the ones availabe though the tactics screen should also be availabe for the pets on their quick slots, the only other thing is maybe there should have been a passive talent that adds some bonuses to your character or Master Ranger could have provided that.
Least favorites were duelist and bard, i thought duelis would be the one before the game came out but assassin is better, and for me it didn't have a special talent that attracted me, like the assasin's feast of the fallen and mark of death, all of them really or ofcoarse, a summoning talent. Bard didn't didnt suit my style but its a useful spec
What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
ofcourse stealth, i love dual weapons, lethality, evasion, combat movement, coup de grace, feign death was fun to use but at such a high cost and so late in the talent tree i felt it should have been available earlier

*Lockpicking and Stealing is lackluster. Stealing 99% of the time yields almost nothing useful aside from a small money amount. Even when you spend time on stealing from a high level NPC, it often times goes to "nothing to steal". When you do have success, its usually a small money amount or just says "stealing success" which yields nothing most of the time. Lockpicking is the same. Waaaaaaaay too much generic loot in chests. I guess these problems kinda go back to itemization.
*Archers feel reeeeeeeeeally underpowered for some reason. I have no idea if its a bug or what, they just don't seem very powerful. Especially compared to Dual-Wield Rogues. They seem more like a support class...only they're not very good support and they do mediocre damage.
*Dual-Wield is the best spec, I think its perfect for a Rogue, especially when you have Stealth maxed out for Backstabs.
*I feel the Ranger Specialization is pretty good because its simply another companion in your party. Assassin/Duelist are a great combo of Spec classes. I feel Bard is a bit misplaced in the Spec classes for Rogues because they use so much sustainable abilities that take a boatload of Stamina. Something that can't happen because Rogues rival Mages in Hotkey/Tactic slots...
*Itemization. Endgame Daggers are really underpowered it seems. Also seems like every class has talents(Arcane Mages/Archers/Warriors can remove the Heavy Armor penalty) that steer them towards Heavy/Massive armor. It creates unbalanced Itemization and their definitely is way more Heavy/Massive armor than Light/Medium. I think Light has its fair share but Medium seems to be lacking for some reason...

- What do you like and dislike about the Rogue?
I think that you could have added the sword and shield talents and two-handed talents to this class and eliminated the warrior all together. This is definitely the better of the two stamina classes. You can up strength, put him in massive armor and play the class like a knight in shining armor or keep him in light armor and play the dextrous lightly armored warrior. With the extra skills the class also provides utility to the party.
I don't think that lockpicking and trap disabling should have been Rogue only skills. At the very least I think the trap making skill should have been used for trap disabling too, it's preposterous to assume that someone who can assemble a mechanical trap can't disassemble it too.
- Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
I think stealth is somewhat overpowered. Combat stealth isn't really overpowered, though there doesn't seem to be a detection mechanism in the game (at least none that is explained). The big problem is that you can throw grenades while staying stealthed, that mechanism should be disabled.
Dirty Fighting also doesn't seem to have a resistance check. I'm not sure that abilities without resistance checks are good, even if the effect is only a 2s stun.
I still have the same complaint I had with the warrior that letting 1 ability point increase defense by 1 point while attack can only be increased 0.5 points per ability point is a broken mechanic. I think that the increase should be diminished to 0.5 points per point of dexterity and the other 0.5 points should be tied to strength, for the same reason they both increase attack (strength makes you faster, dexterity increases your reaction time, they both help you parry and dodge blows).
The only thing that is underpowered is the 10s coolsown on stealing (I realize this isn't a rogue exclusive ability). I can understand the cooldown in combat (or if you're caught), but there's no point to it outside of combat. Actually all abilties could probably do with a faster cooldown once combat is over so you don't end up standing around for a minute waiting for Arrow of Slaying to cooldown before you continue exploring.
- What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
All of the rogue specializations are useful. My most favorite is Assassin, regardless of how you build your character this is always a useful specialization. My least favorite is Ranger, it's useful but I've never liked summoners.
- What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite
My favorite is the Dirty Fighting, Coup De Grace line. Very useful line for the combat Rogue.
My least favorite is the device mastery line. I think these should be skills instead of talents. Making them talents handicaps the Rogue since at least one party rogue is going to be down 4 talents so he can use them. I think the talents should be kept combat related, and utility kept with the skills.

Scattershot, however, seems more glaring because of encounter design - it's uncommon to encounter multiple mages, but it is common near endgame to see large squads of archers all packing Scattershot. This seems especially glaring to me since you have white enemies - basically rank-and-file troops, even if they are an elite force - which are all packing a technique that you'd think only exceptional archers should be able to pull off.

When I played as a mage and I wanted to go up in one tree very quickly all I had to do was pump points into magic and I could have some 4th tier spells mastered by 4th level. That was gratifying as it allowed me to build my character quickly the way I wanted to.
With the rogue if I wanted to be stealthy in combat, it didn't matter where I dumped my stat points I could only pump up stealth at levels 1,4,8, and 12. Which meant that even though I wanted my rogue to go stealthy in combat I couldn't attempt that until level 8. (In comparison my level 8 mage after reading a couple of books could cast inferno, mana clash and Waking Nightmare)
IMHO too many of the Rogue abilities are un-necessarily restricted by my level, preventing me from building the type of rogue I want. I humbly suggest that the level restrictions were removed and then let players develop their rogues by putting points into the appropriate stats and choosing their talents the way they wish to.
