And now it's the Rogue's turn. As we continue to plan for the future of the Dragon Age franchise, we're interested in hearing your feedback regarding the different classes.

In this thread, we'd like to ask your opinions of the Rogue class. You can still comment in last week's Warrior topic. Next week's topic will cover the Mage.

 • What do you like and dislike about the Rogue?
 • Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
 • What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
 • What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?

Be sure to answer the poll on Rogue specializations as well!

(1) Archery. Personally, I think archery ought to be beefed up and be a rogue-only skill.

(2) Traps/unlocks. Nice skill, but I think other classes ought to have some equivalent skill(s). My preference would have been for mages to have a stealth (mouse form!)/trap disarm skill and for warriors to have a door/lock bash skill, maybe with a higher failure rate than for rogues.

(3) Armors. Pretty dull, for the most part. I would have liked to see leather vests and/or pants. Rogues/archers like to be maneuverable and tough, with their arms free. The "skirt motif" got a little tiresome.

(4) Weapons. Really wished there had been matched weapon sets available for dual-wielding rogues. Matched sets would equip as though it were a single weapon (like a two handed sword) but visually appear as a set of matched daggers on the character and in combat. I think "mismatched weapons" -- 2 different kinds of daggers or an axe and a sword, for example -- just looks really dumb.

Specializations:
(1) Bards needed to be more healerific, imo. Not as good as a healer as a mage/spirit healer, maybe, but better at healing than what it is currently.

(2) Ranger was nice, except that the higher you went, the uglier the beasties became -- so I always just used the basic wolf. I would have much preferred having a single summonable, nameable pet (wolf [or mabari hound]) that  accrued skills, atttributes, armor (collars, warpaint), and/or changed color at higher levels.

Dog, imo, should have been a summonable/nameable/"skill-uppable" pet for all PCs (like a ranger's wolf sorta) and not a regular party member.

Overall, this was the first class I played and I think it's a pretty good class.

What do you like and dislike about the Rogue?

Like:  I love that it fills and accomlishes the role of scout + damage dealer exceptionally well.  Whenever I think of the class the lightly armored, manaueverable but lethal dual wielding fighter this is what comes to mind.  The pathfinder, the sniper, the special forces guy etc...   DAO captured this perfectly in the rogue class.

Dislike:  This is more of a dislike of a general DAO mechanic.  Longswords can double as peircing weapons.  I would like to see Dex affect the damage of the longsword in the same manner as strength.  Leave axes and maces as they are.

Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?

Overpowered:  Stealth to some extent.  I'm all for sneaking around but I think an element of realism should be somewhat employed.  I.E. I shouldn't be able to stand direcctly in front of someone and still not be detected.  Do you remember that old Looking Glass Studios game Thief?  As long as you crept in shadows etc, you were efectivley invisbible and moving behind someone was still possible but it took care and picking your path.  The fear of being discovered was almost palpable.

Underpowered:  Trap detection radius and the time it takes to dismantle them almost makes me just say screw it I'll eat the traps.

What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?

Favorite:  Duelist.

Least favorite:  Ranger BUT I need to qualify this.  I love the idea of the specialization but the execution is wrong.  Pets need the following:

a)  More abilities.  For example if you hit the tactics button fast enough on the wolf he gets use of overwhelm and shred which take even the first version from zero to hero.

B)  Summons need to survive area transition.

c)  Tactics accessible anytime.

d)  If the above isn't possible at least drop the summon time.

e)  Would love a little more variety in the animals.

B and C combined made me almost drop the spec.  Having to summon my pet at every area marker AND redo his tactics (you can't save them as a pre-set) was uber annoying.  Not to mention if you transitioned straight into a fight.  It wasnt worth it to summon the pet and do his tactics.

When I first got the game I figured this would be my favorite spec (I love pet classes) but the above really dampened my ennjoyment of it.  So please don't get rid of it, just buff it a little!

What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?

Favorite:  Dirty fighting tree.

Least favorite:  Below the belt tree.

Some things feel like they were done right, like traps. A well trapped area can drastically alter the tide. There are a few key points that have been touched on that I would like to see re-thought; just want to reinforce them.

*Ranger - Losing pets on transition = highly annoying.

*Talent trees - Some abilities are placed where they just make no sense. Assassin for example has his 2 best abilities at the beginning of the tree. Some trees are just dilluted with abilities not worth using. Archery for example with long draw times on abilities and lackluster sustained abilities. Archery in general just needs an overhaul, sorry.

*Stealth - Although I admit its fun to drop traps right on somethings legs and remained stealth, I feel quite strongly that any damage dealt should knock you out of stealth or you might as well just give a mage invisibility that doesn't break with damage.

Out of time, few more points I would like to touch on. Might post them later.

I like the rogue, but I think the Archery talents could use a little bit of oomph. It doesn't have to be a direct DPS buff though, the damage is fine, even if it's lower than that of a backstabber.

A talent putting Rapid Aim on abilities for example would be nice for example, or something increasing the flight speed of arrows. It would make the archery tree more of a strategical tree than a DPS tree, but that's perhaps just my idea. But I'm referring to certain abilities, like "pinning shot", which takes so much time to land, that the target is probably already in melee range by the time the effect kicks in. Same thing with arrows that interrupt spellcasting or have a stunning/knockback effect. These simply take too long to be effective. A backstabbing rogue is faster with dirty fighting and deals noticably more damage as well. So bring at least the tactical use on par with that of the melee rogues.

And though not used commonly, I like the ranger specialization as well. The pets don't bring huge damage, but they have a good tactical use. For rangers, I'd suggest making the pet-tactics more accessible. From what I heard, they're completely inaccessible on the consoles, while they're not exactly convenient to access on the PC, and will need to be adjusted too often. As with the Archery talents, make Ranger a more tactical tree, but for the ranger this can be done by making the pet tactics and abilities a lot more accessible.

Likes- stealth worked well, loved sneaking in and disarming enemy traps before battles.

Dislikes_ The class didn't feel unique enough. I mean stealth and backstab were cool, but too much core thief stuff was spread out point investment-wise(stealth,traps,poison unlock) also some of those things all classes could get like poison and traps, which made rogues less unique. In the end a rogue didn't feel much different from a warrior if you take way stealth and backstab. Same with a warrior if you take away better armor and tanking abilities.

Underpowered-archery is underpowered until you get the higher talents and gear, which is to say most of the game it is underpowered. Also taking this long to fix the dex xbox bug thing kinda sucks :(

Overpowered- this game is full of stun or disable skills/spells. Rogues have their fair share of these. I think if some of those were toned down/taken out it would do alot to balance the combat of the game but really all classes could use this.

Favorite specialization-assassin

Least favorite specialization-dont know as i haven't tried them all, but i don't plan on trying a ranger

Favorite talent tree is def dual wield tree.

What do you like and dislike about the Rogue?
I like the emphasis on positioning in their [melee] playstyle.  I like how they can rip mages apart unless they are otherwise shut down.  I dislike the abstruse talent descriptions and picking locks.  It's clumsy and aggravating when you have +30 dexterity, +30 cunning, and Deft Hands IV, yet locked chests continue to thwart your attempts.

Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
Archery is underpowered, slow, and uninteresting.

What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
I like the idea behind the Assassin and the Duelist, but stamina is typically so tight that you can't really use their abilities as much as you'd want to, especially when you have all of your other crucial rogue talents to juggle.

What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
I like dual-wielding, but it really should have been differentiated in some way from the Warrior's dual-wielding tree.  Rogues have little use for the middle line (Dual Striking) because if you're not backstabbing as a DW rogue, you're not being as effective as you could be.

You're getting this from everyone, but Archery is dull.  Most of its abilities seem redundant and bland.  It's weak and slow.

I'm currently in the early stages of playing a Rogue Assassin. I like the Rogue class but it gets confusing in battle to correctly and quickly find the enemy with the least amount of health to kill them. I constantly spend my time running back and forth between helping Alistair as the tank and then my firing squad (Morgie and Lelia). However, I am early in the game so this will change as I get my gameplay down.

I love having the ability to control the lock picking and trap detecting. It was annoying to play my mage and have to switch to Lelia every 5 min. (OMG! If she does that laugh one more time, I might have to seal her in the Deep Roads. Wait! If I leave her in Sten's cage, could she die in Lothering?)

So, the Rogue is fun and requires a lot of strategy. But not as damage pleasing as a mage because the fights take longer. :( I just wish that I could blast everyone away.

I do agree with you that the detection radius is too small and sometimes even seems broken.  The time it takes to disarm the trap is negligible, though.  Just start the disarming process and then move your Rogue.  The trap will disarm on its own.

[*]I like how they can utterly kill everyone by just stunning enemies and backstabbing to death. Their critical chance is pretty impresive too. What I don't like is their smaller ability to defend against stuns and knockdowns. It's almost better not having a rogue in a party when fighting something big...
[*]Overpowered : critical chance and their massive damage per second. Of course, this is the case of dual wielding rogues.  Underpowered : they can get a bit weaker against mages.
[*]Favorite is a tie between Ranger and Duelist. Least favorite, I have to say Bard. Even though it can be extremely useful.
[*]Favorite talent tree is probably the rogue abilities and two weapon fighting. For exclusion, the least favorite is ranged, although I very much enjoyed my archer run.

Be sure to answer the poll on Rogue specializations as well!

Like:
I like a rogue's versatility. It's ability to stealth and stun targets makes the game much more interactive.

Dislike:
The only real rogue option is to go dual wielding. Even as a bard the Archery tree is lack luster in both versatility and damage. If anything I the rogue class should have an archery tree that is substantially different to that offer to warriors.

Rogue armor asthetics are disappointing. Not only is the default light armor lack luster in every aspect, but there is never in change in look. Yes, rogues can technically wear medium armor, but the miniscule defense increase is not worth the stamina cost.

Feign Death is utterly useless when compared to Stealth IV.

The fact that lockpicking and trap disarming is limited to rogues. It would not be such an annoyance if the exp reward from these small acts did not lead to a substantial advantage in party level.

Overpowered Aspects:
Dual wielding general seems to do an unmatched amount of damage. Rogues with dual daggers and the proper talents can unload an insane amount of damage. Similarly, warrior dualwielding two full fledged one handed weapons too do an insane amount damage.

Underpowered:
Archery tree is utterly useless and the none passive damaging abilities are hardly worth the stamina.

Favorite Specialization:
By far is the assassin. It brings an unparraled amount of damage increase to the party and main character.

Least Favorite Specialization:
Is easily the Ranger. Not only does it only provide a mediocore pet, but the AI behavior and pet itself reset with every load screen.

Favorite Rogue Talents:
Evasion and dirty tricks are a must have. Stealth is also an amazing talent once it is mastered.

Least Favorite Rogue Talents:
Feign Death is useless. Having to drop four talent points into lock picking also feels like a waste of talent points.

What do you like and dislike about the Rogue?

The Rogue class is great, I like most things about it.  Assume anything I don't mention somewhere in this post as being actively disliked is probably something I enjoyed about the class.
 • I dislike the Evasion talent.  The talent check triggers prior to the check for an attack hitting.  Then its animation interrupts whatever your Rogue is doing.  Taking this talent actually nerfs a high dexterity Rogue.  This makes it just awful, especially for a tier IV talent.  But it's useful for low dexterity/high cunning Rogues.
 • Feign Death is also kind of bad.  I never used it, and I can't see why I would with the way it is now.  Which makes it an odd talent to be in tier IV.
 • I dislike that there is not much variety in armor compared to the warrior, especially lack of special armor sets.  A bit more variety in Rogue oriented weapons would have been nice too.
 • While I like to play my PC so this isn't too big a deal, but for any other Rogue in my party, I dislike that the AI has no way to move the character into a backstabbing position.
 • I don't like the name of the class either.  Thief would have been so much better.  I mean people would still misspell it, but at least I wouldn't be thinking they're talking about makeup.  (And my tongue is only partly in cheek when I wrote this paragraph.)

Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?

No, nothing is particulary underpowered or overpowered.  Though combat stealth seems a bit cheesy as it works too well, I mean no way someone should be able to hide while your in melee with them.  But it's not close to game breaking, so it's no big deal to me.

What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?

They are all effective specializations, no losers in the group.
 • For role playing purposes I favor Assassin and Duelist, they just seem to fit in best with my style and the characters background.
 • My main problem with Ranger is that from a role playing perspective, it only seems a natural choice if you play a Dalish Elf.  A Noble Human could also pick Ranger without seeming too out of character, but for the other origins as well as your companions, it just seems "wrong."  From a mechanics point of view, please fix it so the pet doesn't disappear in area transitions, and please make the tactics screen available at all times the pet is summoned.
 • I dislike Bard despite it's usefullness.  But that's just a style thing - it's simply not my style.  The idea of singing songs and telling tales doesn't match what I want my characters to do.  Support is not what I want my PC to be doing.  I see how useful it can be, but I doubt I will ever choose this specialization for my main character.

What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?

Well, it's all pretty good.  But I dual wielding is more fun for me because the backstab ability doesn't work with archery.  Further, archery talents are poorly balanced, tending to be way too slow and requiring too much stamina as well.  Archery works fairly well with no talents, or great with Arrow of Slaying and Scattershot.  The rest of the talents range from OK to just not worth it.  I find it better just to shoot faster, do more damage, and kill the target.
I also add my favorite talents here, in addition to the two archery ones listed above, they include: Dirty Fighting, Combat Movement, Coup De Grace, Lethality, and Momentum.

COMMENTS:
 • Why are the stealth and deft hand lines in talents instead of skills?  Pretty much every other talent/spell line for every class is combat oriented - except these two.  It really seems like they should be skills.
 • I wish we had at least one more Rogue party member so we could fill all four slots with Rogues.  Daveth would have been a great addition, IMHO.
 • Why is it that only cunning helps out with skills like removing traps or picking locks?  A steady hand, a nimble hand, a quick hand - i.e. dexterity - seems like it would also be quite useful for these things.  Perhaps half the dexterity modifier plus half the cunning modifier should be used instead of the cunning modifier.
 • I know stealing is not Rogue specific, but since it is appropriate for the class...  The cooldown on stealing is too long (thank goodness for mods).  Also, I'd like to have an option to steal something in a merchant's inventory.  Plus a penalty for being caught thieving would be a good addition as well.
 • Another not exactly on topic, and not really off topic is Zevran.  His auto-leveling scheme not only produces impossible choices on occasions, but it never seems to match his description of his abilities.  And I can think of at least one later dialogue with him where he volunteers to do something, that again contradicts what talents he has.
 • Note I've been reading previous posts before posting all this, and I want to add I don't want flashy/pretty Rogue armor (like Cailan's massive armor).  I want armor that looks non-descript, except in the case of bards.  Rogues blend in, not paint targets on themselves.
 • Other thoughts based on what I read: I also don't see a need to try to make this class more distinct from a warrior, even merging the two would be fine with me.  As long as they are different classes, Warriors are supposed to be the best fighters since that is their focus, so they really should out DPS Rogues in most circumstances.
@The people complaining about needing four talents to do lockpicking - you're wrong.  Each talent counts as 10 points, but each point of cunninng over 10 counts as 1 point.  An adjusted cunning score of 70 opens all locks and removes all traps (that you can detect) without spending any talents points.

Micromanaging the rogue in melee to get behind the target seem to be a bigger hassle than it is worth. It would be great if there were a tactic option where you could let the computer maneuver them into backstab position automatically. maneuvering the rogue myself just takes up too much time and holds up the game.

I think it would be useful if their special attacks such as 'below the belt' would cause a noticeable visual change in the effected target while in effect. I use stuff like that and I cannot really tell any difference.

I particularly like rogues largely for the archery skills, and the ranger specialization, stealth and archery both have a good synthesis with traps, which I quite like using. Arrow of slaying is definitely my favorite though, gives a "BOOM! HEADSHOT" kind of vibe.

The lack of variety in armor was slightly disappointing though, and from what I can tell there aren't any archery deathblows, those would be cool, slow motion drawing back the bowstring real far, a war cry or something, then releasing the arrow and watching it embed itself in a hurlock's  nose, followed by the hurlock staggering forward, then collapsing.

I like that, unlike the warrior, the rogue has more at its disposal than the ability to charge everything head-on. Depending on your defense and armor, you still can, but it gives you more of an option not to. It feels more tactical at a base level, unlike the mage, which is more or less tactical based more on what spells you learn. The thing I dislike about rogue is more of a personal preference, I think - It seems that, unless you're using a bow as your main weapon, there's not much reason not to dual-wield. I tried to use a weapon and shield for a while just because I was trying not to use two weapons, but even despite other abilities and enchantments (paralysis runes), I still felt pretty underpowered.

Aside from that, I didn't think very much about the job was underpowered, but at times I considered how powerful it was to use combat stealth and go from ten or so enemies attacking you to none. That wouldn't bother me so much either, but then becoming visible again, I don't regain any of the hate I had before. While good for the rogue, it's a great way to get an overwhelmed tank or mage killed. At least from my own experiences with things like Baldur's Gate, if I saw a rogue appear out of nowhere, it would be pretty high on my kill priority. With Feign Death, I think the complete hate shed/reset from Combat Stealth is a little redundant.

My favorite specialization is the bard, by far. It had a lot of different skills for different situations, and I had to pick and choose. My least favorite specialization was probably Ranger, not because I didn't think the pets you could summon were bad, but because when I think "Ranger," I think of more skills than just having a pet. Something like being able to find crafting materials in the wild or something.

My favorite rogue talent tree is probably the trap disarming/lockpicking tree. It was by far the most useful for treasure hunters like myself, even though none of the skills were of much use in combat. My least favorite was probably the stealth one, not because it didn't function well, but because it seemed a little overpowered due to my explanation above.

Like: Backstabs and lots of choices in weaponry/attribute combos
Dislike: Lock boxes containing nothing worth bringing a rogue other then your main, and Leilana + Zevran initial Skills being Horrible(Who acctually puts points into the punisher tree other then their first character????? Im looking at you Zevran!)

under powered: archery(on 360 everything other then arrow of slaying is weaksauce)
over powered: tainted blade + momentum + haste + rally + song of courage + dueling + BackStab = win

Favorite spec: Bard; lost of reactive sustained abilities (assassin nearly as cool with well done passive abilities and an awesome first pointer)
Least fav spec: ranger...just so much wasted potential for an archtype... it needs to gtfo and go back to WoW

Fav talent tree: the bloody tree from wardens keep >_> just so gooooooood
Least favorite tree: dualstriking>riposite>cripple>punisher first time i spent points int his the game tricked me and made me think they were good... Never again will i be fooled by cool talent names... never!!!!!

Most here have covered my views on the Rogue. The main thing I would like added though is another fighting style. I like for my Rogue's to have a swashbuckling type feel. The type that fights with a single hand and a long fine blade, like a rapier. I would love to see a single-handed fighting tree added to go along with the dual-weapon and archery routes.

[*]What do you like and dislike about the Rogue?
I liked how they could pick locks and stuff.  I like how they attacked fast and did lots of damage, very easy to make a glass cannon type.  Feign death sucked because the enemies would just wait over your body and then slaughter you when you deactivate it.  Incredibly useless.
 • Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?
On nightmare, your defense seems to be nothing.  Regardless of how high your defense is, anything higher than normal will shred you without missing.

Oh yeah, tactics for animal summoned from hunter would have been great.

[*]What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?
Favorite specialization was a tie between assassin and duelist.  I can't really say I had a least favorite because you might take it the wrong way.  They were all awesome.
[*]What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?
Well, everything seemed to work with rogues.  They were my favorite class.  With the exception of getting chased by everything regardless of how many lower hostility items I had, being a rogue was the best.

My only complaint is that DW warriors supposedly make more damage than rogue. This shouldn't be the case. Otherwise, lovely class! Zevran is my fav. companion.

Xbox 360 user here. Why no fix to the dex bug? Archery and dual wielding daggers both pretty useless because the unfixed bug.

Why? The pc players get love. We don't. it's a fun type to play, but if you play a warrior/noble, you can't open any chests in your origin and you can't ever go back. Money is hard enough to get in this game, to make only the rogue be able to get any early.

I like the duelist best, ranger next, then bard, then assissin.

I agree with others about the deft hands thing. It should be in skills and available to all classes.

I agree, playing dead is a waste, and so is evasion if you're an archer. Too many talents required for a decent archer (notwithstanding that since nov 5, there's still no fix for the 360 or the ps3, so it's pretty useless without the damage we're supposed to do. Dropped the ball bigtime here.

So, if it worked as it was supposed to, I suspect it would be great fun. But unless I buy a new computer, and clear off my desk, I can't enjoy it as I should. Wrong.

- My biggest dislike about rogue's was having to spend talent points on lock-picking. It's even worse if I'm not playing rogue, b/c talent points are a more precious commodity for companions. Spending talent points for lock-picking on companions always feels so wasteful when you won't get many opportunities to level them throughout the game. It also forces me to bring 1 of 2 characters with me all the time if i want to open any locked chests at all. I also felt that the rogue could have had more of a unique feeling to it. Other than backstabbing, it isn't all that different from a DW warrior. Oh, and since most rogues out there use light armor, how about more of a selection for that armor type? The armor types in the game could have looked more rogue-ish imo.

As for what I like, I suppose stealth was handy, although it seems strange how i can just disappear during a fight, or stand right in front of someone in broad daylight and not be seen. It would probably be difficult, but perhaps the stealth mechanic could be deeper.

-I didn't feel like anything about the rogue was particularly overpowered, but like most I find archery very underpowered (but not entirely useless).

-I don't really have a favorite or least favorite specialization, but i found assassin most useful. I wish the specializations were more ubiquitous across the different weapon talents. Currently, there is no reason to choose assassin when playing an archery rogue (besides maybe passive buff, can't remember what that is).

-Again, I don't have a favorite when it comes to talent trees, just skills that i found more useful than others. Lethality was nice, as was Evasion, but i hated how it interrupts whatever I'm doing each time it triggers.

As a side note, I wish I could set the tactics for my rogues to seek a backstabbing position on enemies. Maybe there is a way that i missed, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case.

What do you like and dislike about the Rogue?

Like: being stealthy and being able to choose battles

Dislike: not nimble/fast enough

Is there anything that you feel that is underpowered or overpowered on the Rogue?

I feel the damage from behind is underpowered, and they draw a lot of attention from monsters (maybe a warrior agro problem)

What are your favorite Rogue specializations? What are your least favorite?

Favorite: Assassin, Duelist

Least favorite Bard, Ranger (the animals seem to be glitchy)

What are your favorite Rogue talent trees? What are your least favorite?

Favorite: Dual weapon of course, and any that increased damage and sneakyness

Least favorite: Archery, i found little use for it with the mages present

Side note: More damage, more finishing animations for backstabs/ etc and quicker setup of traps and situations to use them in
