I unlocked a specialization but it was after I was passed lvl 7 and so am I basically screwed in unlocking the skills for that specialization?

No. Once you are able to enter to "Level Up" interface, you should be able to assign available specialization points. After you have 'learned' a specialization, you can then begin investing talent points in that specialization's talents.
