I can't seem to get surround sound through my Radeon 5850 through HDMI. I've tried the tweaks out there (deleted DeviceName, etc.), but it still doesn't work.

What version of the game are you running? I connect to my home theater receiver over optical through my X-Fi card and ME1 v1.02 (Pinnacle Station) doesn't detect surround unless I run the game, go to the sound options and uncheck Hardware Audio, click Apply, then check Hardware Audio again, and finally Apply again. I have to do this every time I switch from playing ME on headphones to on my 5.1 system. I should also note that I did a clean configuration load by deleting the config folder (default: My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Config) and then running ME which creates new, fresh files (doesn't mess up saves or anything, you just redo all your settings). The goal of deleting the config files is to clean up any mess the configuration tool might have caused. It tends to screw things up. If I were you, I'd just delete the config folder, have ME make new ones, and never run the tool again.

Sorry to double-post, but I tried my own method again (typing my last post made me want to play in 5.1 again) and it didn't work. So rather than mislead you, I would recommend this which I just did (literally only minutes ago) to get my system working. You obviously know where to edit stuff in the BioEngine.ini if you attempted a few things before, so head to that same section and check for a whole bunch of erroneous lines below and delete them. Then, delete anything next to the "DeviceName" entry after the equal sign and leave it blank. Now save your changes (make a backup copy before saving if you want) and make that ini file read-only (right-click, Properties, check Read-Only box). Load up ME1 and then do the "uncheck, check" method for Hardware Audio that I listed above and then load up a save and see if everything is working dandy. Now, I should mention that if, for some reason, you can't check "Hardware Audio" in the first place, you have another issue entirely. Hopefully that works.

Dang, still getting only software audio.

I think it's because the game is having difficulty recognizing the HD audio device in my Radeon as a typical hardware soundcard.

There are hardly any sound cards that are fully compatible with Mass Effect. It's a known issue but it was just built that way. I have a sound card that supports surround sound but I'm forced to play in stereo.

Ah, I had a bad feeling that might be the problem. I think you might be out of luck, unfortunately. Well, I hope your HDMI audio-out works with ME2.

So there's no software surround option for Mass Effect 1? I use a Radeon HD 5670 and get surround sound in Mass Effect 2 by default. But I only get stereo from Mass Effect 1 (even though my receiver reports 7.1 audio in both instances).
