Who's to say that he actually is dying (maybe he lied). We didnt get to hear the whole conversation, nor do we know what will happen. Its obvious they decided to toss in that lil tidbit to stir up some discussions like this.

its obviously taken out of context. he not actually dying, he just dying to play ME2 and he cant be bothered with assassinating while hes playing.

Maybe he's just dying in an emotional kind of way (I mean, his emotions die) he stated, that he sometimes feels regret, but nothing most of the time. If the occasions where he feels regret decrease, on could name it dying.

I wrote a story about quarian with a terminal illness. Thane knowing his death is near may explain why he is so particular about saying prayers, and it might explain why he joins Shepard's group. He really has nothing to lose. Except, perhaps, whoever his Achievement refers to. Securing the future are we?

I do hope I'm wrong though. Hid death would make me cry.
