Thane is dying from an illness that is slowly destroying his lungs ability to take in oxygen. If you actually go and talk to him he tells you its called Kepals syndrome and that the Hanar are trying genetic modifications for the Drell but because of his age they won't be able to cure him in time

If you people actually paid attention to the game, you all would have heard him say that he is dying from Kepral's Syndrome, a lung disease. So yes, he IS dying.
