Deus Ex.I can remember a few other games with good music, but this has stuck to my head and I occasionally find myself whistling the main tune without realizing it. And the music actually followed the action, which was neat at the time.

Despite being a craptastic game on release, Age of Conan has the best soundtrack of any game. Below is a sample. It starts slow but the woman's voice is simply hypnotic. If you like it then search for other tracks as they are all very impressive.

Age of Conan Track #1

I second Deus Ex.

I won't go through a list but one game that had particularly good music that isn't often mentioned was Xenogears.

The music had some of the most haunting tracks I have ever heard.

There are many fantastic soundtracks I can think of off the top of my head, but I think the best example of a song not only setting the scene but also being a major highlight was the song that played in Homeworld when the Kushan engaged the Imperial Fleet. Absolutely chilling.

My absolute favorite is on YouTube...but the video has CGs from the game which are very OMGWTFNOTFORTHESQUEAMISH18+, so I'll refrain from linking it.

My 2nd favorite is 伝承の詩 -Vox-(Denshou no Shi -Vox-)

It's from Lamento -Beyond the Void-. The OST is amazing and the music fits the environment and draws you in.

Seriously.. sure it's from a movie first. But it's been in games too so it counts!.

Or perhaps this onewww.youtube.com/watch
Love it. Especially at about 0:45

I'm really bad at remembering the soundtracks of games overall.

And also, the sound track for Dragon Age origins is just amazing, one of very few games where i actually remember the soundtrack. www.youtube.com/watch
At about 1 minute in it's just epic.

My all time favorite game soundtrack is that of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2. Its been almost a year since I played it the first time and I STILL play the soundtrack in the car. Nothing beats traffic stress better!

The best track on that is For the Craftworld. I've played it often in other games' boss fights.

Ah, Axelay. Good choice, Skellimancer. One of my favorite shooters. The "ending" was cruel; especially if you finished it in hard mode, but it was still a great game.

My favorite track though? Talk about an impossible choice to make. :o

I'd have to go with Bloody Tears. This is just one version of several so I'll go with the Castlevania 4 and Nocturne in the Moonlight versions. I've liked this track ever since hearing it while playing Simon's Quest ages ago. Link Link

Second place would go to this track from Final Fantasy Tactics: Link

No top three list is complete without... Link

A couple of my favourites from the Guild Wars series.

First, Resplendent Makuun from Guild Wars: Nightfall. It plays in the background while in the province of Vabbi, a wealthy area with a distinct Arabian Nights feel to it.

Secondly, Althea's Theme from Guild Wars: Prophecies. It's the creation theme for the Mesmer class, and gives a taste of the mystery that the class uses so well.

And finally, the Overture from Guild Wars: Eye of the North. Interpolating the classic Guild Wars Theme, Tome of Rubicon (the Dwarf racial theme), Under the Dark Span (the Asura theme) and Song of the Shiverpeaks (the Norn theme), it's the first true overture written for the Guild Wars games. A taste of everything you'll see as you move through the game.

For me, one of the best ever in game soundtrack is this :
www.youtube.com/watch - Baldur's Gate 2, Throne of Bhaal, Bhaalspawn Battle (against the 5)
Followed by the most badass theme ever :
www.youtube.com/watch - Red Alert, Hell March
And from the same series :
www.youtube.com/watch - Red Alert 2, Grinder
Then :
www.youtube.com/watch - Half Life (1 and 2),... don't know the name?

There are many others, but these were really some I remember most of the time.

Sheer epicness:
