O Hai. 'Tis a new fanart thread for our most beloved game, but with a slightly different focus than the other fanart threads I've seen thus far. While most of the artists focus on the playable characters, I prefer the creatures. Seeing that I'm mostly active on the New Creatures thread, this is probably... understandable.

28.1. - Public Service Announcement: This thread now no longer hosts my art only. If anyone of you would like to show his appreciation of the Dragon Age monsters, do so here. Everyone's contributions are more than welcome! Sharpen the pencils and draw away happily!

---------

Warning: In comparison to Reuben, Lady Winde, Evolvana and the other amazing artists here, I suck. Genlocks could color better than me, my anatomy is awful and I couldn't draw realistically if my life depended on it. Also, my English sucks. So if you seek art that is truly aesthetically pleasing, this is probably not the thread for you.

Furthermore, I have to add that in a few cases, I tried to take some personal ideas into my drawings. Don't get me wrong - I love the creatures from Dragon Age and am well aware of the copyright and everything, but I feel that some of the models in the game don't show every aspect the creature might inherit. I tried to show what I thought of the concepts that lay behind them merely.

Due to me not possessing a deviantART account (and refusing to, because it's even more embarassing to be the only failure among thousands of artists than being the one among twenty or thirty.), I'll only post one picture at a time. As soon as I find a more satisfying way of uploading, this will be remedied.

The first artistic 'crime' I have commited onto the unsuspecting bestiary of Ferelden is...

Image IPB
Shah Wyrd, that awful demon that had my first DA party flat in about a minute. He actually has a very nice concept about him - he is a coalescion of thoughts that had no particular direction. Just as these thoughts, I figured the demon to be ever-changing and unfocused, only roughly holding the form of a demon, growing and retracting appendages at unspecified points of time. I thought the form of the Rage Demon went in the right direction, but didn't do him much justice, so I tried to add to it. The result is shown.

And now, you may speak as you like. If you don't like it, fine. If you have constructive criticism, please tell me. I'm happy as long as someone looks at it. ^_^

I am both flattered and flabbergasted you'd say that, since your art is really good :P I love the concept for this, that nightmarish blob of shifting matter that you've created, the way I imagine most demons in DA should look like  Great job!

Good job! Monsters are just as difficult as dwarves, elves and humans to draw. Even harder since you need to make them look menacing without being a caricature. Good job!

Incredible!!

I look forward to other creations, darkspawn, dragons, other demons, ESPECIALLY the Pride Demon.

Nice, gives it a lot more impact than the in-game representation. This is more what I expected it to look like.

...wow. I just came back home from a 'half-weekend' with friends and found that. What a pleasant surprise! Thank you for the positive replies!  I'm happy that you like ol' Shah Wyrd. I have two completed pictures finished, one with nugs that I will post tomorrow evening (I'm in Europe and it's almost Sunday...) and one of...

Image IPB

Gaxkang the Unbound. Don't wonder about the colours... I had screwed up with choosing the proper colors for the shadows and then decided that it didn't look soo bad at all. A little like a x-ray picture from a doctor who had a little too much of the happy pills. Given Gaxkang's "bipolar" nature, I felt it was fitting.
Basically, the picture tries to combine the Arcane Horror with the Revenant, - the two forms of Gaxkang - mostly in the armor department. The face of them is pretty similar, except for the covered eyes of the Horror (right eye), the ones with the glowing pupil (left one) of the Revenant and the differences in the mouth area.

If your eyes threaten to faint and die from shock, please tell me and I will of course repair the effect.

It reminds me of the foil cards you'd get in collecting marvel comics cards. It looks really cool.

Thank you again for the comments. I'm glad that everything is so well received; hopefully the pictures will improve in a while. ^^''

For today, I have two slightly smaller pictures. The first one is...

Image IPB

A family of nugs. I'm not sure why, but I find them to be pretty likable (well, that's probably because I never got that Cute Nug Leliana is supposed to receive). Ignore the background - I hate drawing them. Unfortunately they reflect that sentiment very well.

The second one, slightly bigger, includes an idea I had.

Image IPB

It's a Genlock emissary, with a twist. Seeing as the Darkspawn comes from the Deep Roads, I wonder whether the contact with lyrium has enabled a few of them to obtain magical power. I wonder whether there may be some of the emissaries who have made use of lyrium (for replenishment) for so long that they have not only grown addicted, but changed also.

The insanity lyrium causes made them neglect their injuries mostly, which has caused the one pictured to lose his left leg. In addition, his armor is torn and destroyed in places; his posture is crooked and the eyes and hands started to glow in a strange blue, similar to the color of lyrium. Whether his power amplified, who knows? He is a strange foe on the battlefield in any case.

I like both of theses images. The nugs is really cute and looks like a painting that would be hanging in the game in a kid's room or something hehe. The Genlock emissary is also cool.I don't know how they use magic but I believe they say it's a different kind of magic...being around lyrium all the time might be a factor hehe

Thank you again for your nice comment, Tallon!  And here I have another one. I'm in a strange productive period at the moment, but I reassure you that it will not always be like this. If I should annoy the other artists by posting so much, you may bop me on the head and I'll shut up for a few. Everyone of you is very friendly and skilled, so I don't want to be a bother.

<dramatic voice> This one is dedicated to the amazing Upper_Krust, one of the posters in the 'New Creatures' thread who has many interesting ideas. </dramatic voice> One of them inspired me to make an uncolored scribble.

Image IPB

The creature depicted is a Greater Hunger Demon, which he (or she?) imagined as a large creature similar to a behemoth, able to swallow entire players who then end up in a "pocket dimension" of some sort (I would suggest to call it 'stomach' ^_^) and have to fight their way out of it while suffering damage. I imagined it to have a largely amorphous shape that is only determined by the mouths it forms and sucks in constantly as well as the teeth that line its body. If you would flip it around, you would notice that the whole monster itself is actually a giant pair of 'boneless jaw' that may snip entire Pride Demons in half... if it were intelligent enough to just fold itself in the middle.

The party at the upper left is mostly there to point out the demon's magnitude. It's a little bigger than a Pride Demon. Also, you can imagine a little funny dialogue from them concerning the monster, if you so desire.

Reuben: Hm. I wonder if there were any in the game. They probably exist, but I never paid much attention during the Broken Circle or wherever they might hang around. When there weren't any, the lesser ones are probably small blobs with a huge mouth that go 'NOM NOM NOM' on everything in the vicinity.

I guess they prefer kitchens.

Amethyst: I'm glad that you like the nugs. The ones in the game are adorable... as long as you mute it. I still think that they would be a little more violet in places, with the veins more visible... after all, they are naked.

And you really find that emissary "scary"? The only thing that's truly scary about him is the coloring. I wish I had a better excuse for being such a failure with colors, but unfortunately, I have none. With proper coloring, he would be scarier, I guess...

Naked nugs.... Image IPB  I never really thought of them like that before.  LOL.  And btw, I think that little squeak is kinda cute. Image IPB

And after reading The Calling I have a deathly fear of emissaries.  So yeah I found your emissary dude really scary, but I guess I just see the Architect in all emissaries now. LOL.

Yeah there were a few hunger daemons in the circle but they're mostly generic. This is what I call a proper hunger daemon, all mouth and stomach!

Hi everyone! Image IPB

Thanks very much for the kind words Chateau Migraine!

I am a 'he' just for the record.

I was thinking the Greater Hunger Demon would be a bit more like this (I'll add the link, don't see how to post images here?)...

http://www.immortals.../IHpreview3.htm

But I like your version better Chateau.
