There is nothing you can do, except asking BioWare for a good 1.05 patch resolving all crashing issues. But it won't take long until you'll realize that BioWare ignores you entirely in this matter.

I'm getting much of the same issues, random CTD's. No background programs running except Memory Improve Master's free version, hoping it would help. (it doesn't) Sometimes I can run through for several hours of playing without an issue, or even leave the game running for a couple hours in camp while I run an errand. Other times I can't even open the inventory without simply getting a "DragonAge.exe has stopped working" It's really annoying and frustrating, like I said, sometimes hours, other times it's every 5-20 minutes, and I can't find what makes the difference in the sessions.

AMD Athalon 64x2 Dual Core 6400+ 3.2GHz
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 (SP2)
2 GB ddr3 Ram
NVidia GeForce 9600GT (8.17.12.6658 drivers)

absolutely no game mods, , but I do have the 1.04 patch

Yeah... just noticed that, machine is running a bit warmer than normal under this game load... but still, like I was saying, sometimes I can play for hours without a glitch, other times, even on a cold boot up of the machine, it just randomly crashes to desktop in less than 30 minutes.

I just finished posting a fix that worked for me in another similar post and I hope this can help other people too. This will only apply for people with NVIDIA cards.

In short I made a custom game proflie using the NVIDIA control panel which has allowed me to play 3 1/2 hours of continuous gaming without a single crash to desktop.

Follow this link for instructions -------> http://www.slizone.c...appprofile.html

I
followed the instructions on that page and created my own profile for
DA:O. I didn't physically make any changes to the newly created profile,
I just kept all the default global settings (which are imported
automaticly). I was able
to play for 3 1/2 hours without any crashing. The longest I could play before doing this was maybe 10 minutes, then crash to desktop. I previously tried the processor affinity fix and fiddled with the graphics options with no luck.

Anybody with an NVIDIA card should try adding a
custom profile for DA:O by following the instructions through the above
link. It doesn't hurt anything to try and if it does work for you then
YEA!

Dismantled the internals in my machine, cleaned EVERYTHING and added another fan from an old tower I had lying around... dropped my temps by a solid 15 degrees and everything seems to have stabilized.

there was a forum i read on this problem a few months ago, and the issue was something to do how much the dragon age cache holds on vista and windows 7, apparently fallout 3 had the same problem and they made a hotfix for this that if you edit all the fallout paths to dragon age, it fixed dragon age too, im trying to find that forum atm because i need to download the hotfix to install again after clean install

Keep us updated, jamierawr88 and jestucker, however, [normally] it's BioWare's job to patch their game properly.

This is clearly an on-going issue, as I've been getting the crashy crashy thing happening to me on my most recent play-through. Seemed to get worse when I hit the Mage Circle.

The frustrating thing is - sometimes I'll go for hours and hours without a crash, and other times it'll crash every few minutes. Been "getting around it" by excessive use of the quick save button. :( I hope they get this fixed (I'm not holding my breath).

Hmm... I have Alistair in my party, but I don't think he has Holy Smite yet. I'll have to check that next time I play.

ETA: Just patched up to 1.04, loaded my last save, checked Alistair. He's not high enough level to have Holy Smite yet, and I got part way through the fight with the Sloth Demon, and the game went crashy crashy.

ETA2: Looks like I'm not going to get past the fight with the Sloth Demon in a hurry, it consistantly crashes when I'm done kicking its butt.

Yeah. People are posting in the tech board without knowing that many problems could be resolved by BioWare patching DAO. I had a crash a few moments ago. Where's da patch?

I have also been having crash issues, I just started Mage, And after I beat that rage demon, it crashes. Sometimes it makes it to the scene in the Magi Tower right after, and then crashes. Haven't been able to get passed that. :/

Has anyone tried setting the affinity to one processor (for multi core systems)? This has worked for me. It seems to slow down loading times and framerate a bit, but not to an unplayable level.

P.S. Before i did this, I was getting the random crashes constantly and the "Dragon Age Origins has stopped working" message.

yes i think everyone knows that trick now, still randomly crashes for some people, but they need an affinity switch somewhere in the cfg's this could help matters

It be nice to have some kind of fix for this. Maybe tomorrow when they get back to the office.

I am all for a little hope... but the last patch for the game was in July 2010, and the devs have said they've moved on to DA2.  So while I can sort of appreciate the sentiment and understand people bumping posts to make a point... I'd hate to see anyone not at least try to troubleshoot a problem if they really want to play the game....

If you're really serious about troubleshooting this issue, you have one of two options:

1) Post a complete description of your problem in a new thread, along with your hardware information, OS version information, and anything else that might be helpful (if you're using mods, for example).

... or...

2) Go to support.ea.com, click on "Contact Us", login and file a support ticket with Electronic Arts.

EDIT:  To clarify... if you take a careful look around this specific forum, you'll notice that no one from Bioware... or even gamers with moderator status, for that matter, has posted here in a LONG time.  I suppose they could still read stuff, and I'd like to think they do regularly.  But there's no evidence of that, since no one from Bioware/EA has weighed in on a tech issue in several months at least.  Some are on the DA2 forums... which is to be expected with the game having launched less than a month ago and a true patch yet to be released for DA2....
