I've never understood the popularity of those senseless entertainments (not movies generally, but walking dead type "monsters" specifically). The original 1930's Mummy with Boris Karloff as other than the monster was already bad -- although the interesting more modern "Mummy" films have had their own strange charm . .

Im running this game on a month old desktop with a GTX 580 and i7 990x, why shouldn't I be frustrated knowing that I can't play Dragon Age: Origins?

No one knows any such thing at this point, not even you, so I agree, you haven't even gotten started with trouble reporting in here yet. Never forget, "Newness isn't Everything".

No one is suggesting that issues with the game shouldn't be frustrating, only that if someone would like to fix the issue that the place to start is in the Solutions Round-Up thread pinned to the top of this forum.  If either of you did this, you would notice that the game has problems addressing more than 2 CPU cores, as do many games.  The solution to this is to set the game's affinity to 1 or 2 cores of your CPU.  There is a link to instructions on how to do this in the Solutions Round-Up thread.  There are also known issues with newer Nvidia drivers detailed in the Solutions Round-Up thread along with directions on how to roll back your drivers if they are causing an issue.  If, after going through the solutions linked there, a person required help with the directions in one of those threads, or if the solutions linked do not fix the problem, a complete problem report as detailed in the Read First thread also pinned to the top of this forum will help fellow gamers figure out what the problem is.

If you would prefer to armflail and complain instead of playing the game, then please proceed.  I was simply trying to point you in the direction of possible solutions.

Hey guys 'tis been a while since I havent posted in this forum. Apparently my crash to desktop problem has disappeared. I upgraded my Video card from an ATI 5970 from sapphire to a evga gtx 590 (first time I use NVIDIA). Im using the forceware 275.33 drivers and all the problems on this game have stopped at least for now :D Unfortunately not without some sacrifices :( all my total war games dont have a flickering problem caused by my 5970 drivers and DAO & Awakening work perfectly BUT now I have stuttering on Battlefield Bad company 2 and DRagon age 2 gets about 35-45 fps on max settings! I used to get around 70-100 with the 5970 and the GTX 590 should almost if not double that! seems Bioware games are somewhat AMD oriented just like Crysis 2 is NVIDIA influenced. I just hope this gets solved with new drivers from nvidia. If not, I would say is not only a lack of game patches that are affecting our gameplay experience but also the intense GPU wars that are favoring particular games influenced by AMD or NVIDIA :(

Not that this post was remotely on topic for this thread, but you are using a particularly probemmatic set of beta drivers for the card. The 280 series drivers were just released and seem to be stable at least for BW games and TW1 and 2.

My desktop is fairly similar to the one you have. Download the Forceware 275.33 drivers from the official website from NVIDIA.I have no problems at all playing DA: Origins, awakening or any download content.
My system specs:
i7980x
ASUS Rampage III Extreme
EVGA GTX 590
120GB OCZ SSD
750GB WD HDD
1000W Silverstone PSU

Note: From What I have checked there are still no drivers that can correct the low FPS for DA2. It works a lot better on AMD based cards :(

Just for clarity's sake, the 275.33 driver is not stable of for DAO or DA2. There is a NEWER beta that has been out less than a week in the 280 series that is stble for both and is stable for TW2. The 260.71 drivers also work fine for both DA games, but not TW2. None of these are associated with low fps, but with crashes to desktop in DX11. (Clarifying to correct misinformation. The issue for the person Heat Guy S replied to was resolved long ago and had nothing to do with his video drivers.)

I understand you want to provide help in this forum but just so you know, based on my experience the 275.33 Forceware drivers have worked on MY SYSTEM , therefore what I previously stated is not misinformation. As I mentioned before, I have a similar Processor and GPU as the previous user to whom I advised to use such drivers. If it has not worked for you, perhaps you have a different issue. Never did I state my troubleshooting as a universal solution to ALL users with CTD problems, I was specifically pointing a possible solution to a user with similar system specifications on DA:O and DA:A. Additionally, it is commonly accepted that AMD worked on the development Dragon Age 2 so the game is optimized to work better on AMD based cards, which translates to better FPS. I have tested the game in both an ATI/AMD 5970 and an EVGA GTX 590. Obviously the latter is faster, but 'tis not optimized to work with DA 2. As for the BETA 280.19 Drivers announced, I will be testing those today and see how it works for a few of my games (mostly from EA). Lastly, the Forceware 275.33 drivers are not BETA, they are officially WHQL.

There is an entire thread of known issues with the 275.33 drivers here.  I'm glad they work for you.  They do not work for most.

Reviving a long dead thread to complain about drivers is still not terribly helpful.  The problem issue for the poster you were trying to help was needing to set core affinity on his processor.

Exactly! I am not saying it will work on every single type of CPU, and 275.33 drivers do work for DAO and DAA, I never said it was the best option for DA 2.I am currently playing DAA with an i7980x, which has the exact same architecture as the i7 990x with slightly higher clocks  and have never set the core affinity of my CPU. In fact, I posted 4 months ago here that my previous AMD 5970 drivers could be the problem. Once I upgraded my GPU the problems disappeared. If there was a single solution to solve all the Gamer's issues with DAO and DAA , this forum would not exist. PC's are not consoles, they are far more complex and can have different issues as they can have different components. As far as how DA 2 performs on AMD and NVIDIA, all reviews clearly indicate DA 2 favors AMD GPU's. You can use a GTX 580 SLI set-up on DA 2 and and even AMD's 6950 on Xfire will perform better.

But if you think Setting the affinity of the CPU will solve everyone's problems then you are a bloody genius :D

I know his issue was fixed in a completely separate thread. I was the one who helped him. Please stop talking to me like I'm an idiot. The 275 drivers also cause issues for some people with DAO and DAA, though they aren't as severe as the issues with DA2. As I suggested to you earlier, the drivers may be at the heart of your lower fps. Given that the game relies heavily on the CPU, a GPU upgrade is not going to have as large as an impact as you might see in another game.

My point was that resurrecting a dead thread was something less than helpful and your statements about the stability of the drivers for DA games was not entirely accurate.

I am sorry my sarcastic comments actually offended you .I thought this was a voluntary help forum for Dragon Age series fans to share multiple points of view about the game, different experiences and hypothesis to solve any game issues and improve overall gameplay experience. Perhaps this is not the forum.

It is, and it takes a whole lot more than a sarcastic comment to offend me.  Please, help away.  There are very few of us around here at the moment.  The vast majority of people can find solutions to their problems in the Solutions Round-Up thread, but many people miss it or need help with the solutions themselves.  Given the age of this game, there are very few truly new issues.

Multiple points of view are awesome.  I was simply pointing out the fact that a) the poster's problem had been resolved and was not a driver issue, B) there are known problems with high res textures in DA2 and the 275 series drivers and other reports of problems with DA2 and DAO/DAA with those drivers but not with the 260.71 drivers or (at least so far) with the new 280.19 drivers, and c) that this was an old thread to be reviving.

It makes no difference. It was dead and buried and you should not have dug it back up again.

Start your own thread or find something less than six months old to add comments onto.

new here, just start playing dragon age ultra got through Liana song no problem, but when i did the dark-spawn quest and got into a intense fight in the alienage by the tree and where i meet the drawfen legion beyond that, it crashed. I guess it is because my graphic card is not strong enough, because this is not the only game i got crashing on me,(skyrim, fallout, and a lot of Bethesda's games, plus Majesty gold edition) some how saints row the third, roller coaster tycoon 3, starcraft 2 and diablo 2 are not crashing on me at all but anyway, i got a basic window 7 laptop (dell), what did need so most of my games run smoothly?

A desktop PC with an actual video graphics card, or a Sager brand laptop, again, with a usable discrete graphics card.

Windows XP Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows XP with SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1 GB or more
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space
Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (this is clearly wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce "6600 GT" 128MB or greater (and this one is more wrong)

(Note: IMO, the practical choices for the two video cards above should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 GS, at least, for small textures - it will take a Radeon X1650 XT (or X1800 GTO, same thing, almost) for medium or better textures)

INTEL'S poor trash (Graphics Chip) IS NOT SUPPORTED

I have 1.04 and the bloody game crashes randomly, if I start it back up, I can get past where it crashed. The game is using over 1.5GB RAM itself. I have 6GB of RAM on the PC but it's using far more memory than it really should be. I think the memory leaks are about the size of a fire hose.

I've had the same problem but only occured all the way at the end of the game, this was around the point where you get to the Landsmeet (first crash occured when i tried to enter Redcliffe before i went to the Dalish) When i reached the Dalish i didn't experience any problems what so ever untill i did the final battle, there i had about 7 or 8 crashes going from the gates to drakon.

It's weird though because in previous playthroughs i barely had crashes to speak off on the same machine, memory aint the problem for me either since it got 16gb to use..

When i had Vista x64 running there were quite alot of problems (version 1.03 at the time?) and ended up with about 120 saves in the end.

On Windows 7 x64 same hardware specs only upgraded my videocard/drivers i had no problems to speak off untill recently. Awakening however runs fine still, spend about 7 hours straight and no problems (exept for some bugs).

Sys specs:
Xeon 5160 x 2 @3Ghz
16GB DDR2 FB-Dimm ECC
Radeon 5870
Supermicro X7DAE (out of my head).

Pretty exotic hardware i know :)
