I bought Ultimate Edition yesterday thinking "hells yes i can finally get this played through, and i heard its better on PC".

DAUE comes with patch 1.04. Did you read my post ^? There hasn't been _any_ patch (news) since july this year and not anyone of the devs acknowledges any problems with 1.04, at least not officially. However, they tend do to something when the crowd's rasining their voices because of a common issue, see the "registering the DAUEdlc"-issues etc.

I am having the same issue, I am at the first village after the battle and it has been a struggle to get that far. before now the game crashed about once every 10-30mins but now it is every five seconds to 2 minutes!

System specs:

AMD AM2 6000+ 3.2Ghz Dual core CPU

ATI HD5750 GPU

ASUS M2N-SLI mobo

750W psu

320Gb WD velociraptor HDD

onboard sound

Any help will be appreciated.

I think the game seems to have some problems with multi-processor cpu (especially AMD cpus). try set the cpu affinity in the task manager for dragon age to only 1 cpu. it fixes the random crashes for me...

yeah, works for me to, but 1 cpu is so slow for me, so i set it on 2 cpu's and works fine... still freeze a bit but its okay.

Yeah, its much better than having crashes unexpectedly... u can make the changes persistent by making a shortcut and placing "C:\\Windows\\System32\\cmd.exe /c start /affinity c daorigins.exe", without the "" to the target in the shortcut. The cpu affinity uses '/AFFINITY c', where the core number follows the formula: c=2^(core-1). For multi cores just add the c together.

I tried setting the Affinity. It doesn't help at all for me.

Was this ever sorted? I picked up the UE yesterday, installed no worries, played for about three hours and then the crashes started; was bearable until the Fade levels in the Tower but now it's nigh on unplayable. Have already faffed about with the ATI drivers and graphics settings (and tried the CPU fix above) with no joy.

It's a great game so far - would love to actually finish it! Cheers :)

Hmm...I started playing this game when it was first released...heck I played it till my eyes bled...but I never had the problems I've had since I came back for the Witch Hunt DLC. That's also when I patched to 1.04. Now, not only do I crash, but its a full computer crash...not just to desktop. My computer says "nope" and completely shuts down. I haven't been able to get past the first 15-20 of this DLC because of crashes, and it's getting extremely frustrating. I know everyone is looking forward to the sequel, but I was super excited when I saw this DLC available and now I can't even play it. :( I really wish they would fix this...

Same with me. I`m not able to finish the game. I`m stuck in Denerim. When I start walking in that town BOOOM desktop crash. So I`m just gonna wait couple of months. Maybe after Dragon age II release bioware will return to fixing

I can't see them coming back to DA:O. Because DA2 is the New SHIIIII*. No seriously, they won't because they'll be fixing DA 2 and putting out DLC and then working on DA 3 which will be an RTS game.

ugh, getting these crashes now, too. DAUE, Win 7 x64, Q9550, 4 gb ram. I tried the cpu affinity workaround to run just on 2 cores and it still crashes randomly. For now I hit F5 like every 30 seconds.

I'll be completely honest when I say I've exhausted every single possible troubleshooting and repair option on the forums to correct the game. I am at the end of my rope, and the game still continues to crash. It didn't used to to this in earlier game versions, but since I started playing awakening this behavior has become commonplace to the point where I have become chronically angry.

XPSP3 ATI HD 4650 Dual Core at 3.2 GHZ, 4gb of ram. Not a fancy system, but the thing is it used to work.
I was hoping the patch would make the game more stable, but it appears this is simply not the case for some people.

My loyalty to Bioware is unflapping, but it makes me deeply sad that such issues continue to linger in a "completed" game. This is not helped by continued DLC releases that engender a severe lack of faith in the population. The developers and EA may be able to skirt individuals for awhile, but eventually this sort of behavior will catch up to them.

I maintain some small hope that another patch will come. Failing that, a new system (apparently) needed. This is troubling to me, but sadly a fact of life.

After buying a system that can cope with modern games (Win. 7 x64, ATI with 512 dedicated graphics memory, Triple-Core at 1.8ghz, 4gb ram) the UE was my first purchase; given the state of it I'm really not feeling inclined to pick up DA2 . :(

Edited to add: I'm in the UK and it's generally random but more likely during fights involving a lot of magic being thrown about, eg. the Sloth demon fight (a dozen crashes to get through) and the main Tower villain.

Can someone official at least give us an update please?

I'll add my disappointment with this game... I have a reasonably quick and well maintained machine, that rarely has issues, but DAOUE gets random crashes to desktop all the time. Sometimes after 5mins, sometimes after a couple of hours. There seems to be no exact trigger that I've seen so far.

My sys is a AMD Phenom 2 965BE just running at stock 3.4ghz, 8Gb OCZ Platinum DDR3 @ 1600mhz, Sapphire 5870 2gb Toxic O/C edition, Win7 64bit Ultimate running off a pair of OCZ Vertex 2 SSD's.
I have the graphics maxed out at 1920x1080, and the game runs smoothly, but just for no apparent reason it will just drop to the desktop with the message DAO has encountered an error, or has stopped working etc. But no information is given as to why....

I think this may be the last EA backed game I purchase. After many years of watching EA take over many good software developers, I've slowly become convinced that they have passion fingers. fsck everything they touch!

Bioware - you were better on your own!

Denerim is absolutely horrible!  I crash in the city every couple minutes.  If I save the game within city limits, it may take 3 or 4 load attempts before it loads without crashing.  I sure hope someone from Bioware is reading these posts because this is completely unacceptable performance for a game that was released over a year ago.

Quick update. Still crashing during fights but it's pretty rare now. If you're using windows 7 first try the graphics changes in the support threads, turn all your graphics down and shut down unwanted background processes.

Next set the DA.exe file to run as administrator and under the Windows XP service pack 2 compatibility setting (right click .exe file then properties).

Hope that helps some of you guys but it'd be nice to play it with better settings and no crashes at all if Bioware could get around to sorting it. :)

Never had any crashes prior to the last patch in July.

Just came back from Fall Semester and decided to run through DA:O and Awakening again. Since 1.04, I started crashing to desktop.

Tonight, it crashed every single time my Mage main tried the Paralysis Explosion combo in the first few seconds of combat, and ist just barely crashed on me casting Mana Clash the instant combat started. It might even be that the spells were used to INITIATE combat which caused the problem, as if I used one glyph, then waited for a few seconds, I was usually fine.

Either way, I'm about 3/4ths through the game, and I simply can't finish it. Some fights become very difficult, and without the combo or Mana Clash, I'm left with Fireball (which never seems to cause a crash) and single-target spells. It's extremely limiting.

Can't put money down on DA:O 2 until BioWare pays some attention to DA:O and fixes these crashes. Kudos on fixing the memory leak, but it seems it was traded for random crashes. Either way, I'm having to restart the game about every 45 minutes or more, except the memory leak allowed me to save first.

System:
Win 7 HP x64
4GB RAM
Q6600 @ stock 2.4Ghz
nVidia 8800GT w/updated drivers

So... after poking around here I see thread after thread about this and no actual solutions. Is Bioware doing anything about this at all? These are their forums right? Don't they have any support staff at all monitoring these threads?

This game is over a year old, how is this even still this big of an issue? Isn't this what beta testing and patches are for?

Game is unplayable atm, stuck at Sloth in the fade. Everytime I try the fight I crash at the one of one of his form changes. None of the 'fixes' i've seen here solved anything. Windowed mode, sound on/off, graphics lowered (lol?), run as admin, frame rate buffer, CPU affinity, nada. Zilch.

I endured crashing every 10-15 minutes just to get to this point, and now I literally can't get past one boss fight.

You can count me out of any future Bioware purchases.

I encourage everyone who is crashing to submit an official support request on the Dragon Age support site: help.dragonage.com/app/home

I submitted one yesterday and I am waiting for a response.  I know we all hope that Bioware/EA monitors the forums, but we might have a better chance of getting their attention by submitting formal problem tickets.  This is clearly more than an isolated issue, so hopefully we can get some sort of response.

I noticed that the problem was alleviated by emptying my Temp folder and closing some background applications. I know this sounds like basic stuff, but it got me past one of my 100% crash occurrences involving a boss fight (The same sloth fight that has nfefx frustrated, in fact).

AMD Catalyst™ Software Suite Version 10.12

- Dragon Age Origins no longer hangs intermittently during gameplay.

Have not had a chance to try myself, but it's an idea for those of you with ATI cards who haven't updated your drivers recently. These are the latest, updated two weeks ago.
