random crashes

to finish one without crash to desktop. None of this happened before the
installation of patch 1.03 and 1.04. While I managed to complete Awakening once
with a lot of patience, I was unable to use some of my favourite spells,
especially Mana Clash and Storm of the Century (Spell Might + Blizzard +
Tempest). In the main game I had to deactivate Holy Smite in Alistairs tactics menu
because it caused crashes too. There are still random crashes despite all
precautions, 1 in 30 minutes on average, the aforementioned bossfights not
counted. Installing Catalyst 10.12. didn't help in my case, but it was worth a
try, lower settings changed nothing as well.
I'm undecided on DA2 and will probably wait until all patches and DLCs are
released before I make my choice, depending on the stability of the final
product. Preordering it is out of the question, as long as Bioware offers no
fix for DA:O.

My first crash was when I battled that little boy possessed by a desire demon, him wanting to save his father. Sorry, I can't remember their names. (EDIT: I think this is at ser perth)
I couldn't even finish it, and decided to goto the mages tower next, since it's still part of the quest. Well now I'm crashing constantly in there. Also, nothing but demons.
I met a sloth demon, which sent me to his dream world. Yep, way more crashes.

As of december of 2010, all my drivers, bios, firmware are up to date in ALL my computer components.
This includes ATI Catalyst 10.12 drivers. I uninstall previous drivers, use a driver cleaner, and then install the newest driver directly from AMD's website.

Here are my specs:
i7 920 @ 3.4 ghz
8GB DDR3
1TB HDD
2x GTX260
You should know that I've rolled back the GPU driver to the previous version because that stopped the more frequent crashes for me. I once played this game without crashes and now it's beginning to crash?
Edit: I purchased DA:O Ultimate edition through steam..

Bioware obviously either doesn't know or doesn't care about this issue; look at when this thread started - over a year ago! LOL. I don't think this issue will get fixed by the developers anyway...

Dragon Age was released around the same time as Windows 7, so I am surprised that they are claiming the game was not tested with Windows 7. The Ultimate Edition was just released on October 26, so wouldn't it have made sense to test that version with Windows 7, since that is what a majority of PC gamers are using? I am going to try to get compatibility mode to work with Steam and see if that makes any difference.Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts Support.
I’m very sorry for the inconvenience that you have experienced with the game. This
could be due to several factors.please make sure that you have ended
background tasks to prevent program conflicts and free up resources for
the game.

Moreover I would like to inform you that the game is not tested on Windows 7 or
64 bit environment. There is a work around that you can try but still
there is no guarantee about it. You can try to run the game as
administrator, to run the game as administrator:
1. Right-click on the shortcut icon of the game on your desktop.
2. Choose the option "Run as Administrator".
3. Choose to allow the game.
If the game still not runs properly, Please try to play it in
Compatibility mode. Please visit the following link for the steps to
play the game in compatibility mode:

Experienced random crashes too with the UE from STEAM. Ok so this weekend I played a few hours and instaid of setting affinity on my CPU to 1 core, I just ignored it and set priority "realtime" for the game (taskmanager/process/DAOw/e exe/right click/set priority=realtime) after that no crashing anymore, not sure if this is the solution, but yeah no crashing anymore for hours play...good!

Just started playing and I´m crashing like crazy too... Started in the Fade then became more uncommon but now it's up to it again. I have a Q9550 CPU and a new 570GTX, so this really annoys me (Just quit Civ 5 cause of crashes due to bad programming, have a look at their forums... And then this...What the hell is up with game companies these days.)
I tried following the advice you mention, about the cores. But I don't get it I think:
Fix for Crashing to Desktop on Multi-core systems (also slows the memory leakage)
This applies especially to AMD processors but also affects some Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 quads!
For dual core set to CPU 1 only, for quad core set to CPU 2 and 3, for i7s set to 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Set processor affinity
Open
windows Task Manager. Right click on the Taskbar of your windows vista
desktop and select Task Manager or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows
Task Manager
Click on the Processes tab
Click on the Show processes from all users button, at the bottom
Click the Continue button for UAC prompt
Right click the process (application) whose processor affinity you want to change
Click Set Affinity
Check the CPU(s) that you want the process (application) to run on and click OK
I can follow down to the Click the Continue button for UAC prompt message, but I don't see any continue button. Can someone please help me, I need to give up the game else.
Edit: Just read the last few pages here. I'm not going to buy their new game that's for sure.

Only thing I did is: launch the game as Administrator, then press CTRL+ALT+DEL that brings up taskmanager, then RIGHT click on DAO wich is running in applications, then choose "show process" then just select priority=realtime. This is on WIN 7 64bit.

Naturally. I didn't even need to try this "solution", as I knew beforehand that the problem lies within the game itself and not in any hard-/software misconfiguration.
The real problem is: BioWare doesn't want to cure it.

Really sorry if it doesn't work for you, I just try to help...played for another 2 hours with same settings without a single crash, so my fix must be doing some good on my system, maybe it is hardware related? I'm on a i7 980x and 3x GTX570 SLI, 12GB Dominator ram...
Yeah, sometime people are just frustrated with trying everything and it doesn't work for them.
But you did help others.
These fixes should help some people. Some claims it completely solves their problems, others none of their problems.
With me, its sort of the middle ground. I still get crashes, but it's pushed back to daily instead of the every 5 minute mark.
Everyone should try those suggested solutions first, and then work from there. It may just have a chance of helping you out.

From looking through logs I'm guessing there's something banjaxed with the graphics memory set-up within the game its self (likely some kind of cacheing issue), but I'm nowhere near technical enough to confirm that for sure.

I'm going to go in there alone to fight, with no active modes and see if that helps. I've tried everything suggested and then some.
I do have a question...if I uninstall my game (PC Collector's Edition Store CD) and reinstall, does it patch automatic to 1.04? I forgot and too dang frustrated to even go read now.
Oh heck...I'm going to bed...I'm fed up.

" Bill: Hi, my name is Bill. How may I help you?
Me: hello
Me: Let's get right to it: When is Dragon Age going to be fixed?
Bill: Please tell me what kind of issue you are facing with the game .
Me: how about all of them. Crashes, memory leaks, the works. From what i've heard and read, it's been like this since release, so, when's it getting fixed?
Bill: Please tell me on which platform you are playing the game .
Me: I got it on Steam about a week orso ago, and right now i'm at crash nr 100 (i've actually counted, to be sure)
Bill: Please follow some of troubleshooting steps .
Me: i've tried everything in there and, like many others, none of it fixes anything.
Bill: At least follow some of steps .
Me: again? no.
Me: This is not something we have to fix, this is something that needs to be patched. As i said, i tried all steps, i tried loads of the "community fixes" and nothing works.
Me: I even trimmed down my Windows services (have any idea how tedious that is?)
Bill: Please patch your game .
Bill: Patches for Dragon Age: Origins (PC)
