We'll never know, at least as far as whatever version of the "problem" you have remains as generic as every one else's version recently.Jean-Funk Van Damme wrote...
... I didn't even need to try this "solution", as I knew beforehand that the problem lies within the game itself and not in any hard-/software misconfiguration.
The real problem is: BioWare doesn't want to cure it.
It doesn't seem to me that I have ever responded to this thread at any point. I seldom read any thread with a zero- content subject line, same as if the subject line is some kind of l33t variety.
Looking at it today, running a quick scan upward, there is no way any of the more recent commenters have any idea that their symptoms are the same, let alone the causative factors. Remember, we are gamers here, if you registered with EA for official support, we don't have access to your hardware and software system environment details, and yet we need the details if we are going to try to make suggestions.
There's no guarantee that any of the gamers present here today has any helpful information; it's a weekend, and readers become sparse on holidays and weekends. There's no guarantee we'd be any better at it in mid-week, when more of us drop in. Remember, official help is EA's province, not this foruim's. The Forum's name is somewhat deceptive.
For us, when there are a few more present than now, you need to complete a problem report, as described in here:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/2836375
Please don't bump it before mid-day Monday, when more of us have arrived, if you post anything this afternoon, Saturday, February 5th. And don't just add a "bump" then, but rather, add additional information you think may be useful.
Meanwhile, the game is well over a year old, just as this thread you are reading is. Almost anything that could have happened in the game has happened by now, and been written about. It isn't necessary to limit searching to the poor excuse that the forum itself offers. Create a good serach criteria, better than merely "random crash" and then add the social forum's URL as a site: modifier to redirect Google, Yahoo, or whatever search engine is your favorite, back into here where we are.
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/5600000
Incidentally, there is currently a preview version of a trouble shooting guide that will be posted in the DA2 Tech forum (PC Tech, yes) when there is one of those. It will work fine with DAO, of course:

As already noted, although I drop in here fairly often, I skip past a great deal of what I see, such as the dupes of the so-many times repeated same old stuff, and I don't try to comment about dlc, etc. In this case, the subject line was far too generic, and over the past year, I didn't choose to try steering it in any particular direction. Like everyone else, I was out running errands, trying to do some shopping, not reading the forum much today.
For some reason, I happened to open the newest added comment at the end, and saw the direction it was taking then, which led to my own added comments above.

Description: Game crashes with the report of "Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working." This can happen anywhere from 1 to 20+ times a day. First 2 days of playing no crashes at all with 5+ hours played each session.
" Problem Details
What? What is the nature problem that you’re seeing?:
The game crashes, no lag or any kind of give away that it's going to occur.
When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only
after so many hours of play?:
This occurs at any time. I have it happen from standing and doing nothing to intense combat.
Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does
it occur everywhere?:
It occurs everywhere other than the title screen.
Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?
1. Playing game
2. Crash
I know that answer was turse but it's seriously that simple. I can simply just be standing in camp and the game will crash.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm hoping to see if someone in a similar situation had a reliable workaround or solution for these crashes.

So? Your "solution" is as generic as any other "problem description" you are criticising here. I suggest you going to OffTopic ranting about your inability to understand that patches 1.03 and 1.04 made the game unstable, no matter the hard-/ or software configuration! Comparison: Other games run perfectly fine on my rig and they do not crash anywhere, anywhen and anyhow ^.^
While I know that many users here are inexperienced computer users and do not know how to handle pc problems, this doesn't apply to everyone.
So we need a good 1.05 patch for fixing at least the crash issues [and other things]. If there'll be a patch after DA2 comes out?

I read the reply about the page file which led me to realizing I should try a selective startup. I started up with 0 programs other than windows background processes. The crashes still happened frequently. So I tried setting the DAOrigins.exe to run in compatibility mode for Win XP sp2. This helped a lot. It reduced my crashing by about 80%.
However still figuring out the last 20% has been frustrating.
But, if you are crashing try doing what I did.

Which is why my system ran the game for over 5 hours yesterday morning/afternoon, and another 4 hours in the late evening without one CTD. Haven't had a CTD since I reset my overclocked video back to default for the memory clock.
And as I have posted, my rig is not exactly bleeding edge, so I don't think it is the patch since I am running 1.04 with over 20 third party mods and all official DLC.

Try www.blackviper.com for a good article and chart on how to trim the fat out of your Pagefile. If you can get it under 1000MB you shouldn't have much problem, at least, in my case, with a very minimal 4 year old system I have found that to be the case.
And that's without having to run in compatibility mode. Just ran about 12 hours yesterday without a crash. Even in the Silverite Mines and no loss of equipment bug showed up there either. I am running 1.04 version of DA with all official DLC and over 20 3rd party mods.

connected to memory leak. I have installed freeware version of Memory Improve Master and keep it running while playing. Since then (in Denerim now, and after having fights like Flemeth) there was not any crash (even with Catalyst driver over 9.anything version installed). I hope it helps to at least a few fellow players.
Oops, I forgot: the game is unpatched - read about patching caused more trouble than solution, so I skipped it.

It was likely caused by using an unpatched game as opposed to memory leak. People have thrown that word around a lot on here and most don't really understand what it means.
Anyway i have seen very few reports of problems with patching up to 1.02 while some have reported problems since 1.04 i have yet to encounter any issues in my own testing with it running over areas where problems have been reported to see if i get the same glitch or crash. Yet to be the case.
Most crashes with DAO from what i have seen are to do with too much crap running in the background or with poor hardware.

I did not have this problem before as this is a pretty old installation. Until I patched to 1.04 recently and then downloaded some extra content like the golems and witch hunt.
You would think they would have fixed it by now.
Windows 7 btw

Well... no not really. I play on the highest settings (ingame) and it just feels crappy to have to turn down the graphics (way low may I mention) when the purpose of getting new hardware was to be able to enjoy both beautiful visuals and storyline. The game crashed with the lowest settings once aswell, although much more frequently with higher settings.... No warnings, no bluescreens no lagging just crash.
Now I read that DA:O is'nt compatible with win 7 64bit wich really makes me a sad panda and since more and more people gets the 64 bit win 7 OP I really think they should look into this.
I would be fine with the problem if the game was 7-10 yers old. Then those types of compability issues is ok but with a game this new? Nah, bad... very bad as I see it. Especially since it happens to so many people!

So far I have been able to play thru 2 spots wich I previously crashed on with the highest graphics turned on without crashing. I don't have time to try it more today though since Im off to work.
What I did was to find the dragonage launcher located in program/x86/bioware and set the compability mode to "winXP service pack 3". So far so good. Let's see if it keeps on helping me tonight...

I'm running an Intel core Duo with 2.80 Ghz and 4 gigs of ram, with a 512mb graphics card. I'm capable of playing Dao, mass effect 2, and Crysis on maximum settings so it's not a computer problem. Please fix this Bioware! $59.99 really hurts when you have no job!
