Coercing consumers into paying more for a product (either paying the extra 15$ or spending the rather large sum of 110$AU, or 60$US i suppose, for a new release) is a terrible practice.

Typically used games are only $5-10 less then new games anyway...  BW isn't forcing anyone do do anything, you get a full game with every new OR used purchase.  They ALSO offer bonus content to those who supported the company (instead of a local gamestop) by buying new with some bonus content.  If you buy the game used, then you can feel free to pay $15 for some extra missions and a bonus character, but you don't need to as you already have the complete game.

The first and perhaps least significant point is that consumers get less product for their money which is just annoying.

This is just plain wrong.  BW barely fit this game onto two discs, your getting an absolutley full and complete game with every purchase.  Reviewers have given the out-of-the-box game amazing scores, everything they've said so far has been about whats on the two discs, not DLC.

The second is that consumers get less freedom with their own product as you can't resell or transfer electronic content.

This is one point I may concede...  you can't resell any DLC you buy.  I don't mind it much, its the price we pay for a developer supporting its game after release.

The third is that, especially in the case of games like DA:O where they have DLC available at release, developers are less inclined to shelve a well rounded game, preferring to release 'additional content' at the same time as the 'complete game' at huge profits effectively raising the cost of your average new release an extra 15-20 dollars.

All the release content for ME2 is free with a new game and the CNC.  It doesn't cost the customer anything extra.  However, I see no problem with the effective raising of the price of a game through DLC.  Considering ME2 costs the same $60 as the last crappy sonic game...  How do you think Ferrari would feel if it was only allowed to charge the same for its cars as ford?  If people are willing to pay the extra for DLC to enhance their product... why shouldn't developers support that?

Finally it is just as likely that instead of paying the extra cheddar people will just become a part of that god awful pirating statistic which already plagues the industry.

Meh, if your going to pirate something... i doubt the extra $5-15 made the difference for you.  If someone was going to buy used, but didnt because of the CNC... well then its not like BW would have made any money off em anyway.

Aside from all this I'm inclined to believe that a well supported game post release will receive much improved sales without resorting to expensive DLC packs, implementing patches and smaller additional content the way Valve does with most of its games. Finally a great many DLC packs in the past have been absolutely, unfathomably, horrifically bad i.e. Pinnacle Station and crap DLC should definitely not be supported.

Well, they need to charge SOMETHING for most DLC... they have to pay programmers, artists, writers, etc.  Even if it came in smaller packages, they would have to change an equal amount to support their staff.  What remains to be seen is the quality of BW's DLC.  For ME1 they had 1 good (BDTS) and one bad (PS), its kind of hard to judge based off that... but if their DLC doesn't live up to expectations for ME2, well then just dont buy it.

Man I don't get it, couldn't a person just go to a friend with broadband and use his network for 10 mins or so to get the DLC?

Nope, DLC doesn't work unless you have an active connection to XBox live. I already tried thinking the same thing.

Man thats all kinds of ****ed up.

I figured it just had to be on your hard drive and associated with a valid gold/silver live account. I recently let a friend use my network but now that I think about it he only downloaded demo's and arcade games, no DLC.

Man, thats just harsh.

In my opinion this expensive DLC is a slap in the face for people that also want to play a few games but can't affort a new one.

That's not really the issue at hand. A used game only goes for 5 dollars less around launch, maybe dropping 10 after a while, so if the issue is budgeting money then those people won't be playing new release titles anyway. I didn't even pick up Mass Effect 1 until it hit 19.99usd for a new copy, and while a large chunk of time passed, I didn't miss out on any genuine content. The emphasis needs to be placed on this being BONUS content, it isn't like you play 90% of ME2 and then a screen pops up telling you to type in a credit card or you don't get to see how it ends. Hem and haw if you must that this "should be on the disc" but legitimate purchasers have nothing to worry about, and late buyers still reap the rewards.

well, for the topic, its quite the business maneuver by EA

doesnt make a dif to the hardcore fans who'll be buying it new but the new fans that they convert who buy used will be powerless to resist purchasing DLC which comes after the cerebrus card purchase

quite the one two punch but if you just realized what an epic universe ME 2 has, and you got a fat enough wallet, then there probably wouldnt be much hesitation in buying DLC and the CNC

In their defense, my friend's Mii Pimp looks pretty cool.

I should really buy a console, this conversation made me feel like a noob and I've been gaming forever.

Incorrect, DLC is linked to both your gamertag, But more importantly your console. If you download a piece of DLC on one console and move your HDD to another xbox not connected to xbox live it will NOT work, but if it is played on the same console that the DLC was originally downloaded on it works fine.

when Fallout 3's DLC was released i found this out the hard way as my bill went past due and they turned it off i had access to the pitt and broken steel but not to Operation anchorage.

Well I'm pretty sure this is the same console I downloaded it on, but its not my original console.

Whatever the case may be, you need broadband to fix the problem. So I'm just not going to bother with it.

Either way, sorry for you missing out, If interested the quickest way to fix it is by connecting it to a broadband connection again and using the license recovery tool on the xbox site to sync your licenses to the xbox you currently use

EDIT: also the reason why people can play DLC offline my nephew was playing Gears of war 2 on my xbox (he doesnt have xbox live) and was still able to play the dark corners extra chapter on my console but when he brought my hard drive upstairs to the other xbox it didnt work.

Long story short, I had broadband about 6 months ago. And now, because I had to move, I don't.

EA has the longer rap-sheet though. Let's just say that if all of the EA execs were in one jet and all of the gamespot execs were in another jet and both jets attempted to land on the same runway at the same time resulting in a near miss so terrifying that all passengers on both planes sh*t their pants simultainiously. . . I'd be entertained for several decades.

EA is evil. Gamestop is Evil. So, I guess you have to decide if this pratice benfits Bioware. As meantioned I like how they are trying to give people incentives to buy new. The only issues I can see: concerned about xfering to another console or computer; you plan on buying used or downloading illegally. I assume most people here are concerned about the latter. This is what really pisses me off: people that steal games. Paying for $15 Cerebus Network access is a NON ISSUE

After having played Pinnacle Station I'm not very excited about ME2 DLC.

EA ruined the image of Bioware. What a pity.

Interesting how you would find the deaths of Biowares creators entertaining.  Your ignorance is pretty entertaining to me.

my two cents:

this is bull, and bioware is continuing to lose my respect as time goes on. resale lending your game is fair business. force me to pay extra money and all i end up doing is hating you for it.

i skipped over Mass Effect because of the BS SecuROM, and maybe i'll end up skipping over Mass Effect 2 because of the BS DLC system.

Resale lending is also harmful to the industry and is in fair ground for combat.

Deal with it
