Coercing consumers into paying more for a product (either paying the extra 15$ or spending the rather large sum of 110$AU, or 60$US i suppose, for a new release) is a terrible practice.
Typically used games are only $5-10 less then new games anyway... BW isn't forcing anyone do do anything, you get a full game with every new OR used purchase. They ALSO offer bonus content to those who supported the company (instead of a local gamestop) by buying new with some bonus content. If you buy the game used, then you can feel free to pay $15 for some extra missions and a bonus character, but you don't need to as you already have the complete game.
The first and perhaps least significant point is that consumers get less product for their money which is just annoying.
This is just plain wrong. BW barely fit this game onto two discs, your getting an absolutley full and complete game with every purchase. Reviewers have given the out-of-the-box game amazing scores, everything they've said so far has been about whats on the two discs, not DLC.
The second is that consumers get less freedom with their own product as you can't resell or transfer electronic content.
This is one point I may concede... you can't resell any DLC you buy. I don't mind it much, its the price we pay for a developer supporting its game after release.
The third is that, especially in the case of games like DA:O where they have DLC available at release, developers are less inclined to shelve a well rounded game, preferring to release 'additional content' at the same time as the 'complete game' at huge profits effectively raising the cost of your average new release an extra 15-20 dollars.
All the release content for ME2 is free with a new game and the CNC. It doesn't cost the customer anything extra. However, I see no problem with the effective raising of the price of a game through DLC. Considering ME2 costs the same $60 as the last crappy sonic game... How do you think Ferrari would feel if it was only allowed to charge the same for its cars as ford? If people are willing to pay the extra for DLC to enhance their product... why shouldn't developers support that?
Finally it is just as likely that instead of paying the extra cheddar people will just become a part of that god awful pirating statistic which already plagues the industry.
Meh, if your going to pirate something... i doubt the extra $5-15 made the difference for you. If someone was going to buy used, but didnt because of the CNC... well then its not like BW would have made any money off em anyway.
Aside from all this I'm inclined to believe that a well supported game post release will receive much improved sales without resorting to expensive DLC packs, implementing patches and smaller additional content the way Valve does with most of its games. Finally a great many DLC packs in the past have been absolutely, unfathomably, horrifically bad i.e. Pinnacle Station and crap DLC should definitely not be supported.
Well, they need to charge SOMETHING for most DLC... they have to pay programmers, artists, writers, etc. Even if it came in smaller packages, they would have to change an equal amount to support their staff. What remains to be seen is the quality of BW's DLC. For ME1 they had 1 good (BDTS) and one bad (PS), its kind of hard to judge based off that... but if their DLC doesn't live up to expectations for ME2, well then just dont buy it.
