In a videogame? Personally for me it's a definite yes. I haven't played a game yet with this much attention to so many aspects in the universe the game takes place in. Very high caliber, very talented, the galaxy feels real and alive, just perfect attention to detail.

So do you agree, or is there another video game world/universe that you feel is even more fleshed out?

I totally agree. The only other world I think had comparable lore if you will was the Warcraft series, but after burning myself out of WoW ages ago (worst community ever) I picked up the Mass Effect series and haven't looked back.

I'd have to say this: For the small amount of time that the universe has existed (in it's entirety and not truncated and discombobulated bits) I would have to say yes. The fact that Bioware has been able to fully craft and realize an entire universe of lore with such rich and deep character to it is great.

So for me, personally, the Mass Effect universe is a shining point of what all Science Fiction strive to be. I really think we are looking at the Star Wars for the next generation.

Eh.....Yes. I would have disagreed if Kotor 3 would have been an RPG and not a damned MMO. But BioWare has always been the best at making the world around you believable. With Besthesda in a solid Second place.

But damn you BioWare for making Kotor 3 an MMO. I've never had so much love and just as much hate for a company.

Mine's definitely the Fallout universe.

Before the abomination of Fallout 3 of course. :P

Fallout 3? You mean Oblivion with guns? Well, that's just my opinion but that's my answer and I'm sticking to it :D

It ranks up there with Fallout's and The Elder Scrolls' for me.

I would say anything for the right price;)

But seriously, yeah I really really enjoyed ME's universe. It sucked me in more than any other game I have played and I wanted to know all about it. I read every codex I could. I even searched them out once I knew they were everywhere.

EDIT: clarity:pinched:

No, I whole heartedly agree.

Fallout 3 was a very fun FPS. I enjoy FPS games with some RPG elements to them... like Mass Effect.

But FO3 was an insult to the Fallout series.

I still like jade empire the best :o, it was interesting and not generic ( atleast nothing else I've seen has been similiar) whereas while I like mass effect it's just a rehash of  other well established scifi stories.

Absolutely. It's like Star Wars without the lame campy-ness. It even has the force(biotics) without making it completely gay and giving the old "A wizard did it" explanation.

MMORPG. It's right there in the name. Also, did you not notice how the game is fully-voiced and has branching dialogue and plot decisions to make? It's just a multiplayer KotOR game. It's still an RPG by any definition.

As for the original question, I'd say it's a tie between Dragon Age and Mass Effect for me. The only thing that can come in at third is 4th Edition D&D, and it's not even a close third.

Fallout 3 was the biggest slap in the face to that universe ever, I played it, beat it and grew to hate it simply because they ruined what I loved about that series, screw FO3

Now my favorite video game universe? Probably, and I know I'm gonna date myself with this, Shining Force is my Fave, then probably Mass Effect...

Star Wars was the top genre for me for most of my life but ME is quickly taking over that. We'll see if The New Republic can put Star Wars back in the top spot for me because before that, playing KOTOR was my obsession on the original xbox.

As for other games, I for one have played FO3 more than a couple times and have 100s of hours invested in that game but as of right now, ME has and likely always will make FO3 a distant 2nd place.

Mass Effect hits the right notes for the more "high minded" Sci-fi universes that I really enjoyed. Like the Neuromancer novel or Blade Runner. It doesn't feel cornball and unrealistic like Star Trek or Star Wars.

ME is my favorite. It certainly borrows from other sci fi universes but puts all the pieces together better than most while still feeling unique. Second is Jade Empire and third KOTOR.

Well, I'm assuming middle earth doesn't count even though it's being made into video games now, so I would probably say Dragon Age.

Mass Effect has a lot to it, but I think Dragon Age is a little more detailed with background and lore. Both are great worlds though, look forward to more.

No, I have to give that honour to the likes of Star Wars. I don't honestly think that any other fictional universe, sci-fi or otherwise, has so much detail and so much history to it.

Mass Effect may never catch up to that, and in a way, it's unfair to compare them. Star Wars had six movies, innumerable novels and a dozen video games at least.

But as far as recent memory goes, Mass Effect certainly does a great job of creating a 'real' world. Excellent work, champs!

You do have a point mentioning it's unfair to compare them. Star Wars has been around for over 20 years, Mass Effect is a new kid on the block. For a new kid on the block though, it's fleshed out very well.

I don't care how many voice actors they get to do it. I will never play it. I've been in the Beta for Matrix Online, played a month of WOW, and even played a bit of Anarchy Online. In the end it all amounted to farming for hours on end trying to get so many gems or so many iron ores or wolf pelts or whatever stupid ass filler they have for actual meaningful gameplay. I also refuse to pay monthly for a game that you have to pay for to begin with.

but this is all my opinion, and doesn't really have anything to do with the topic at hand. Just know that my hate for MMO's will reach no end and burn with the power of a thousand suns.

Proceed with the topic at hand.

No, Star Wars is my favorite. Especially the Old Republic era, so far.

But Mass Effect is definitely second =D.
