I have to disagree, The Elder Scrolls Universe is much better then anything Bioware has produced.

As far as video games go? Probably. I did read Mass Effect Revelations, so yeah.

Personally, I enjoy the Halo universe slightly more. With Mass Effect and then Dragon Age coming a close 2nd and 3rd.

*Edit*  whoops, forgot one.  It's a toss-up between the Halo and Battletech universe for which I think is first on my list.

In terms of how long it's existed compared to how much detail there is, Mass Effect is absolutely at the top of the list. Star Wars and Star Trek have each had decades to develop and grow into the franchises they are now, whereas if ME continues to grow and expand at its current pace it will outstrip them by far in only a few years.

Farscape is a good one, if you like that sorta thing. It was cut down in its prime though.

The Elder Scrolls Universe is probably my favorite (Morrowind, Oblivion not so much). The amount of time I sunk into Morrowind is absolutely ungodly.

Mass Effect and Bioware games in general have better characters though. So, I'm not sure which is my favorite right now.

I was gonna say dune till you said video games..... so I guess TES would be my pick, there are hundreds of books that flesh out the backstory of the universe, its epic. ME is def. a close second though, the codex is awesome

As far as videogames go I would have to say the legacy of kain series is by far the most fleshed out and in depth that I have come across. As far as fictional universes' in general I would have to say.......Either, the Battletech universe, Star Wars universe, Star Treck universe, or the star gate universe are the most fleshed out (when not considering anything from D&D)

.....star wars and star treck are probably the biggest contenders for that title though

No, I have to give that honour to the likes of Star Wars. I don't honestly think that any other fictional universe, sci-fi or otherwise, has so much detail and so much history to it.
Mass Effect may never catch up to that, and in a way, it's unfair to compare them. Star Wars had six movies, innumerable novels and a dozen video games at least.
But as far as recent memory goes, Mass Effect certainly does a great job of creating a 'real' world. Excellent work, champs!

You do have a point mentioning it's unfair to compare them. Star Wars has been around for over 20 years, Mass Effect is a new kid on the block. For a new kid on the block though, it's fleshed out very well.

Try over 30 years.  That being said I'm more impressed with the ME universe.  It's taken an absolutely huge number of authors (including several from Bioware) to really flesh out the Star Wars universe.  ME came out of the blocks with a fleshed out universe.  Think about the originally trilogy of Star Wars.  We have no idea why there is a rebellion against the Empire or even where the empire came from.  The original trilogy doesn't explain what the force is, it just is.  We also learn virtually nothing about the alien species.  Overall it was not a very fleshed out world when it appeared.

Obviously ME is definately my favorite fictional universe with Marvel comics Earth-616 probably being second (though I'm still pissed about Civil War).

I'd have to say this: For the small amount of time that the universe has existed (in it's entirety and not truncated and discombobulated bits) I would have to say yes. The fact that Bioware has been able to fully craft and realize an entire universe of lore with such rich and deep character to it is great.

So for me, personally, the Mass Effect universe is a shining point of what all Science Fiction strive to be. I really think we are looking at the Star Wars for the next generation.
